...centuries, and their impact on story telling is still extremely influential to this day. The main morals that these tales first displayed is still what drives the plotlines of countless movies and books today. There is a large amount of these entertaining stories that owe credit to the original plots and morals of fairy tales. One fairy tail in particular that stands out when it comes to repeating plots and morals among today’s stories is Aladdin, more specifically Aladdin’s heroic qualities and his will to overcome adversary and obstacles. Aladdin is a folk tale that originated in the Middle East; it was included in the vast book of tales known as “The book of one Thousand and One Nights,” which is better known as “Arabian Nights.” The true origins of Aladdin are not precisely known, but some say a Frenchman wrote the tale in 1704, his name was Antoine Galland (Aladdin's origins likely European, and not Arabic). Many claim it is a possibility that Galland also took the tale and made it sound more Arabic, explaining why it was then put into “Arabian Nights.” (Aladdin's origins likely European, and not Arabic) Aladdin was also made into a film in 1992 by Walt Disney pictures, which altered the original story details to those of their liking for the production (IMDB). I believe that the plot of Aladdin and the morals it tries to convey are extremely similar to a particular series of books, which was then made into a film series that was produced within the last decade. Racism in Vietnam and Iraq War

...Gabriella Hatzopoulos War & Society Uniting Tactics, Divisive Consequences Rape, torture and murder against innocent civilians- what could cause someone to do such a thing? The My Lai Massacre during the Vietnam War was a result of a war tactic that continues to be utilized today: racism and dehumanization of the enemy. This strategy, employed by the Armed Forces and facilitated by the media back on American soil has proven to be dangerous in that it causes both soldiers and civilians to treat an entire group as subhuman and unworthy of empathy. We can see this in the My Lai Massacre and through the persistent hare crimes against Muslims during the United States’ current “war on terror.” On March 16 1968, 140 men of the American Charlie Company entered the village of My Lai and were ordered to kill whoever they saw. There was the belief that the province of Quang Ngai where My Lai was located was a stronghold for Vietcong guerillas. After increasing frustration with losing their soldiers and not progressing in the war as much as they’d like, the group took their anger out on what was thought was a village of Vietcong enemies. It was the first chance they had to meet the enemy face to face instead of through grenades and booby traps and finally get even. Lieutenant William L. Calley ordered a search and destroy mission and urged that anyone in My Lai was to be considered connected to the Vietcong in some way, and should be killed. Though no guerillas were found when...

Japanese Anime

...ESSAY #1 From a historical standpoint, just about every culture on the planet has venerated males as dominate figures, while scorning females as the lesser sex. Japan is surely no exception to this method of opinion. Although, ironically male writers paved many of the pioneering days of shojo manga, many female writers emerged and revolutionized the shojo manga market and further gave women within Japanese society who read Shojo manga a sense of exemplification and ‘an air or authenticity’. This was an important mark within Japanese society, because it very closely related to the rise of femininity within Japan, as there were not many female artists before or after the World War. In came the era of the 1970s, and many female artists appeared to express their opinions by manga; their work met the demands of Japanese girls to read manga written from the female point of view. The development of manga had portrayed reality quite well, and sales within these girls’ magazines skyrocketed. As female artists maintained and developed more individuality within their art, Shojo manga in turn depicted the social roles and reduced responsibility that Japanese women had in society. Many of these magazines ‘pushed the envelope’ within society, as many of the relationships created within the stories were doseiai, or same sex romances. The writing and imagery reinforced a “visual of monotony, as many of the characters had similar facial features, and wore identical school uniforms as they...

Disney Heroine

...Disney Heroines and America: Yesterday and Today Haley Hayes English 311c Section 02 Movies reflect current American values. Symbols and signs of these shifting values creep into every aspect of the American people’s lives. The entertainment industry provides an example by depicting the powerful influence animated heroines have on cultural trends. In animation, the heroine archetype has come to mean the “ideal person”: a symbol of the qualities, attitudes, popular trends, and those socially acceptable norms which are the most desirable. Has the public brought this upon themselves by buying into the movie-madness scheme, which dictates how one should think, feel, and, in part, be? This introduces another interesting question: Does the shift in societal values affect the nature and content of animation, or do the values portrayed in animation and public’s willingness to be overpowered create these changes in American beliefs? Regardless of which comes first, analyzing a character is synonymous with analyzing the culture from which the character is spawned. These symbols in animation, unfortunately, don’t always depict America’s best values and more often than not are targeted at children. Truly, the influential impact of animation on children is most perfectly depicted in the famed Walt Disney Heroines. These Disney girls have come to reflect America’s ever-changing values and the evolution of its popular culture. Despite the public’s initial skepticism...

In addition, since ICA tends to integrate quantitative and qualitative analysis more than other courses, you will have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills you've gained across the curriculum (e.g., from finance, ISOM, Marketing, O&M, and Strategy). Building Competitive Advantage The broad focus of the course is on building competitive advantage with special emphasis on how firms can gain access to new resources or capabilities that may grant a competitive edge. We explore strategic investments that are required to compete effectively in uncertain and turbulent environments. Managers often throw up their hands and argue that planning isn’t useful when the landscape is shifting rapidly. However, with the right set of tools, strategic management can have an even greater impact in this setting. We place special emphasis on competitive advantages that stem from valuable and hard-toimitate resources or capabilities. Accordingly, we will focus much of our energy on the question of how to build, acquire or ally to gain...
