WOUNDED HEALER ANALYSIS

Carl Jung is a a heroine of mine for several reasons. He did study with Sigmund Freud; however, he branched off during his mid-life crisis because he realized that there is more to life than psychosexual stages. He believed in the collective unconscious; a sense of spirituality and the idea that countertransference can actually be helpful to the patient rather than harmful to the analyst. He believes dreams can be interpreted for healing and countertransference because they provide patients with images of their private inner world. He believes that we are all searching to fill a certain void, whether it is our anima (the unconventional, irrational, feminine side) or the animus (masculinity). I think that we all need a little of both in us to feel balanced. As implicated in The Wounded Healer; it’s a matter of how you can handle being wounded, that can bring relief to clients. The more wounds the analyst is capable of tolerating, the more countertransference is plausible; thus helping the patient to continue with recovery. As Carl Jung mentions; the analysts volatile emotions will never be totally worked through [as will anyone's for that matter] but should be calmed, and can be reconstallated under the impact of the patients unconscious. (p.107). As the patient speaks in therapy, there are certain unconscious emotions that unravel known as transference. As the analyst listens, he becomes aware of his own wounds, but nevertheless knows he cannot relay them to the patient. Instead he must get “used” by the client through empathy, and that based on a transient identification; the analyst must feel that he/she has or shares the problem (p.103).

Pastoral Counsellin

...Often when we hear of some tragedy, be it large or small, we hear that ‘counsellors’ have gone to help those who are bereaved or traumatized by the disaster. Counselling is big business in the natural world. But counselling is also a very natural and very essential part of the Christian Church and the Christian life. With this argument postulated by McClatchey I launch my objective analysis of the question “Is Pastoral Counselling Necessary Today?” I do concur with the view that counselling is an integral and essential part of the church and Christian life. However to fully answer this question one has to first answer other fundamental questions, such as what is pastoral counselling? What is its aim and purpose? Also one must also observe the nature of pastoral counselling and its impact on the church, the home and wider society. For the purpose of this paper the proposed questions will be keenly examine so as to justly establish whether or not pastoral counselling is of any necessity in today’s society. A definition of the term ‘Pastoral Counselling’ is what be the first stride in looking at this intriguing argument. Pastoral counseling is a form of psychological counseling which incorporates spirituality into therapeutic treatment. The goal of this type of psychotherapy is to address a variety of underlying psychological needs from a faith-based perspective. As one observe this definition it is clear that pastoral counselling seeks to merge psychology and theology...

MRS. DEPARTMENT OF FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF UYO, UYO AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA. FEBRUARY, 2012 1. INTRODUCTION All human societies have medical beliefs that provide explanations for birth, death, and disease. Throughout history, illness has been attributed to witchcraft, demons, astral influence, or the will of the gods. These ideas still retain some power, with faith healing and shrines still used in some places, although the rise of scientific medicine over the past millennium has altered or replaced mysticism in most cases. The ancient Egyptians had a system of medicine that was very advanced for its time and influenced later medical traditions. The Egyptians and Babylonians both introduced the concepts of diagnosis, prognosis, and medical examination. The Hippocratic Oath, still taken by doctors today, was written in Greece in the 5th century BCE, Horstmanshoff et al (2004:7). In the medieval era, surgical practices inherited from the ancient masters were improved and then systematized in Rogerius's The Practice of Surgery. During the Renaissance, understanding of anatomy improved, and the invention of the microscope would later lead to the germ theory of disease. These advancements, along with developments in chemistry, genetics...

Countering Compassion Fatigue: a Requisite Nursing Agenda

...personal vicarious exposure to trauma on a regular basis. Yet this phenomenon of compassion fatigue lacks clarity. In this article, the author begins by describing compassion fatigue and distinguishing compassion fatigue from burnout. Next she discusses risk factors for, and the assessment of compassion fatigue. The need to support nurses who witness tragedy and workplace interventions to confront compassion fatigue are described. Citation: Boyle, D., (Jan 31, 2011) "Countering Compassion Fatigue: A Requisite Nursing Agenda" OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing Vol. 16, No. 1, Manuscript 2. DOI: 10.3912/OJIN.Vol16No01Man02 Key words: Compassion fatigue, nurse stress, work setting improvements, communication skills Nurses care for ill, wounded, traumatized, and vulnerable patients in their charge. This exposes them to considerable pain, trauma, and suffering on a routine basis (Coetzee & Klopper, 2010; Hooper, Craig, Janvrin, Wetzel, & Reimels, 2010). While many nurses perceive their work as a calling, few anticipate the emotional implications and sequelae that come from their close interpersonal relationships with patients and families (Aycock & Boyle, 2009; Walton & Alvarez, 2010). Compassion, or the feeling of emotion which ensues when a person is moved by the distress or suffering of another, is foundational to...

Health and Wellness

...Health and Wellness in Native North America It is true that many of the old ways have been lost. But just as the rains restore the earth after a drought, so the power of the Great Mystery will restore the way and give it new life. We ask that this happen not just for the Red People, but for all people, that they all might live. Black Elk, Oglala, Sioux Contemporary health status of American Indians can be best viewed through the lens of various federal policies enacted over the past 500 years. These policies were developed largely in response to dramatic population losses among the indigenous peoples of America, resulting from genocidal actions of military campaigns, the lack of immunity to the diseases that accompanied European colonizers, and the assimilation efforts that destroyed tribal structures and wellness practices. Medical services were first coordinated through army physicians in the Department of War in an effort to control the spread of diseases from early reservation sites placed on or near military forts. By the twentieth century, the rapid decline of the Indigenous population, documented by the “Meriam Report” of 19281 prompted new assimilation efforts to save the first Americans. Healthcare services were re-coordinated within the Bureau of Indian Affairs and then into the Public Health Service, finally resting within the Federal Indian Health Service (IHS). Assimilation policies, however, proved to be highly destructive resulting in the...

My legs wanted to carry me to him, but my head was telling me to stay away. The feelings were so strong that I felt faint and had to sit down."
