Writing an Argument
Learning Team C debated the credibility of an online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. There has been a debate in recent years about the credibility of the encyclopedia. This paper will research the four steps to fairly presenting an argument, and how there four steps relate to the Wikipedia debate.
Present Both Sides of an Argument The first step to writing an argument is to present both sides of the argument. A one-sided presentation will make you appear to be either biased or sloppy in your research. If the sources are available and if their views are pertinent, they should be represented and, if you wish, refuted in your essay (Spatt, 2011). The base of Learning Team C’s argument on the credibility is how the information is added to the online encyclopedia. Wikipedia allows users of the website to add information to the topics covered on the website. Members of the team felt that is discredited information found on the website. Once the information is added to the website, Wikipedia has a panel of personnel that verifies all information added. Other members of the team felt that because this system is in place, it credits the information.
Provide an Account of the Argument Wikipedia is a source of information that is not credible in the eyes of the University of Phoenix. Members of the team felt that this discredited the source of information. One interesting point was made is a team member had a University of Phoenix instructor that served on the panel of personnel to verify the information posted to the website. Having someone of a stern educational background adds credibility to the website, but some team members felt that if Wikipedia did not post information that hasn’t been verified publicly, this would further add to the credibility of the website. This is a valid point. If the website briefly posted information that is not verified to the website, many users could read the information of cite it in an academic paper.
Understanding the Source
There are many reasons that academic facilities prohibit the citation of information found on Wikipedia. The base of the argument is centered on how the information is added to the website. This is a fair presentation, but there is a variety of information that is in fact valid on Wikipedia. In recent years, Wikipedia has become the go to source for information. When users search a topic using search engines like Google, Wikipedia is usually the first source of information that is presented. When considering the many education and media outlets that discredit Wikipedia, readers should observe what the outlets are basing its debate on. The reader should consider all the facts of the argument and research those facts.
Provide a Fair Argument
In order to give readers a fair presentation of the selected debate, the writer must fairly present both sides of the argument. This allows the readers to view each pro and con of the argument and develop a fair opinion of the topic. In the case of Wikipedia, it is critical for Learning Team C to present to facts and opinions of all members of the team. If information surrounding the debate does not support the facts of findings of the writers, this should be included into the arguments. This information could be pertinent to readers picking a view point as their own. Conclusion
There are four simple mistakes to avoid when writing a arguments. Don’t be one-sided; present both sides of an argument, don’t omit crucial parts of the source’s reasoning; provide a complete account of the argument, don’t quote ideas out of context: make sure that you—and your reader—understand whether the source really supports the idea that you are citing, and don’t twist the source’s ideas to fit your own purpose; provide a fair presentation (Spatt, 2011). When writing the argument it is very critical to consider the four steps to writing an argument, and the simple mistakes to avoid when writing.
