Academic Writing Success

...Academic Success in America James E. Martin Averett University Academic Success in America Academic success in America would not be a critical issue if parents ensure, at an early age that their children understand personal responsibility when it comes to education. Starting from the time a child learns to walk; parents are providing their children with an understanding of how to be successful in life but with that being said, it doesn’t mean that your children will become rocket scientists just because you do the right thing. As a youth, I learned both good and bad examples of academic success from my parents. The first thing I learned was that mom was a high school graduate but my dad had to drop out of school in the ninth grade. Discovering the educational levels of my parents was important to me because I felt their success in life would be the same as mine, all I had to do was get through school, graduating or not and I’d have money, cars, a house and a family. During my earlier years of learning (elementary school), my parents did not review my school work for accuracy, nor were they members of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). My parents had hectic schedules; my dad would leave for work early in the morning and return late in the evening, while my mom would leave for work in the afternoon and return late at night. I didn’t have anyone to check to see if my homework was finished or help me with school work; my parents relied on the school system in......

Mm578 Writing Tips for Success

...MKTG578 Instant Writing Tips to enhance your writing effectiveness Having facilitated several MKTG578 courses, I have noticed a consistent string of grammar, punctuation, or syntax (words incorrectly positioned in a sentence) errors that seemingly appear over and over again in my adult learners' papers. As ALL written submissions are evaluated for their graduate-level writing, it is time to grab the bull by the horns and eliminate those pesky habits that one has developed over the years! To help you get a FAST start, please review the following… and demonstrate to me your assimilation of each in your written assignment submissions and threaded discussion postings! 1. A good paragraph focuses on ONE theme of thought. The best paragraphs are those that do not exceed 6-8 lines. Paragraphs that are longer than 6-8 lines result in the human eye becoming "lost in a sea of of words." You will note this paragraph is five lines; it is much easier to read than a paragraph that would have, e.g., fourteen lines. Always ask yourself whether you are attempting to write more than necessary. 2. Notice the above paragraph. The last word is necessary. Because it stands by itself, that one word is called a "widow." Try to avoid widows when writing. 3. The best sentences are those that contain FEWER than 25 words. The longer the sentence, the more punctuation is required… and the more difficulty a person has reading AND comprehending that which you have......

Academic Success

...Academic Success 1 Each year about 2.75 million students enroll in a 4 year degree program at a university. On average 33 percent of these students drop out within their first two years of school. Academic success is an ongoing effort and can be a struggle for many students that have outside factors affecting their ability to attend school. Following a few simple steps can help students manage their lifestyle and continue academic success. Goal setting, thinking critically, understanding the writing process, and decision making are all steps to continuing academic success and avoiding road blocks. The first step to continuing academic success is goal setting. Setting S.M.A.R.T goals or goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely can help make a huge endeavor seem attainable. Psychologist Camille Rodriquez states that “any goals that students set should be meaningful to them, not just words on paper.” Students that take the time to truly understand what they want to accomplish and set goals to get them there are 83 percent more likely to achieve that goal. According to a study at the University of Michigan 70 percent of college students drop out because of lack of time and being burned out. Setting small attainable goals can help keep a student focused on something small that may not be as daunting as four years of school. Setting goals can help with time management and avoid the dreaded burned out......

Continuing Academic Success

...Continuing Academic Success GEN/201 Dec 15, 2014 Aimee Styers Continuing Academic Success Developing Academic success that will follow you throughout your life starts with planning, understanding your learning style, developing an effective writing and critical thinking process. As I begin my continuing education, continuing academic success is what I want, not only in my academic accomplishments but in all that I do at home and at work. So what is success, in its simplest form it is accomplishing or achieving what you desire or set as a goal. Then academic success is achieving or obtaining that degree and continuing academic success is the process of taking what you learn at school out into everyday life and your job. For me success is taking control of my education, abilities and skills to help me achieve my goals. Before I can do this I must establish a plan and define my goal or goals. So how do I reach this goal? That is a question many of us face, in many aspects of life. In reaching a goal it must first be defined and measureable. Effective goal setting is a key to success in whatever you do. According to (Morisano, Hirsh, Peterson, Pihl, & Shore, 2010), failure to have clear goals has led to students dropping out of college. When establishing a goal, an important question to ask is, why. Not knowing why you desire a goal will lead to a good chance of losing direction and site of the goal. Resulting in either the goal being delayed or worst,......

As I continue on with my education, I would like to have great academic success. Academic success can be achieved by being aware of one’s goals, the writing process and the importance of critical thinking skills. By knowing these things, I believe my academic success will be achievable. Goals Setting goals in life is the key to my success. I feel that without goals the task you do in life has little to no purpose. “A goal is whatever an individual is striving to accomplish in their life”(Alispahić, n.d., p. 197). There is a lot I would like to achieve in life; that is why setting goals makes so much sense. Also having goals works as a motivator and encourages me to have a commitment. The bigger the goal the more fulfillment I will have in accomplishing them. (Alispahić, n.d.). My educational goals are that I finish my bachelor's degree with a GPA of 3.0 or above. After that, I would like to move on and obtain a master's degree. Also, I plan to stop procrastinating when it comes to my homework and studying. Procrastination is something I have struggled with and realize it will not help me to achieve academic success. Some career goals would be to find a closer job while I am finishing my bachelor's degree. When I get that degree, the aim is to get a job in my......

Achieving academic success is a difficult but rewarding process. It is achieved by setting goals, using the writing process, applying critical thinking skills, knowing your learning style and utilizing all your available resources. If we put our minds to it and work hard then we can succeed. Not only in academics will we succeed but in life as well. Setting Goals Academic success is achieved by setting goals. Goals give your life focus and a clear direction. Goals also give a new meaning to everything you do. Students that do not regularly set goals find themselves just drifting through their college education with no real plans for academic success. They base their decisions and actions on what ever comes their way instead of what they hope to accomplish in the future. Setting goals can lead to academic success by staying focused, having a clear direction, knowing where you need to go and how you are going to get there. I plan to take a quiet minute to think about more goals I want to set and to determine what my values and priorities are in education and in my career. Critical Thinking

...Critical Thinking for Success Shelly Butler GEN/200 March 30, 2015 Russell Prechtl Critical Thinking in Education and Daily Life Critical thinking is a process that is used every day, but without acknowledgement. We utilize all the steps in the critical thinking process when we do the jobs required of us, handle daily situations, or even when we attend school. All of us utilize the key steps in critical thinking in different ways. Emotion is a trigger that prevents us from making some rational decisions. In a group setting accomplished tasks are in a productive way, we have situations that cause difficulties in communication. If we all were more aware of utilizing the critical thinking process more efficiently, we would see more cases that had a different outcome. The Process of Thinking As a child, we are taught to learn from our parents what is right from wrong. Some parents give logical reasoning when preparing to educate the child better. A child is more likely to understand when given the reasons. When we reach the educational system, teachers, or professors, give us grounds for the lessons we are learning. We process all of this information by asking questions and analyzing the given information accurately. Upon entering the workforce, we have been prepared to utilize the critical thinking process to assist in accomplishing the tasks required. All of these steps taught aid in becoming successful academically and in your career. Researching critical......

...Continuing Academic Success XXX GEN/201 XXX XXX Continuing Academic Success Going back to school can be a very difficult decision. There are many factors that can determine the decision to go back to school such as finances, career growth, looking for a better job, or to fulfill personal goals. That made me think about the reasons why I was going back to school. I think for most students, why one would want to return to school is an easy question to answer. After much thought, the important question is not why I was going back to school but how I was going to finish it. I needed to evaluate the reasons why I did not complete school and narrow down the key factors that will make me successful this time around. The variables for academic success are different from student to student, but some of the key factors for all students are goal setting, time management, and academic integrity. Goal Setting Goals are essential to any type of success. Goals serve as a directive and energizing function. It affects the persistence of participants and affects action by leading to arousal and discovery (Locke & Latham, 2002). Goals will keep someone motivated, focused, and provides a sense of direction necessary for academic success. However, simply creating goals will not lead to academic success. During my early academic career, my lack of goal setting led to academic failure. It was difficult for me to achieve my goals without having a clear understanding of what I was......

Continuing Academic Success

...Continuing Academic Success GEN/201   Continuing Academic Success Achieving success is something that many consider to be difficult, sometimes too difficult to be worth even trying. But there are many tools and processes available to help people be successful. By knowing what these tools and processes are, students are able to achieve not only academic success, but also be successful in many other areas of their lives. Setting goals is an important step in achieving success. By recognizing your goals, a person is able to comprehend what is truly important to them. Setting specific goals, rather than general goals, encourages people to work harder to obtain their goals. A few important factors in setting goals include tracking progress, goal importance, complexity of the goal, and commitment (Locke & Latham, 2006). In order to reach your goal, you must first ascertain whether that goal is realistic and achievable. Once you have established this, the next step is to formulate a plan with clear and consistent steps to help you reach your goal. The steps in the plan not only guide you down the path, but also provide encouragement to continue working toward goal achievement as each step is completed. The goals that you set can be in any area of life, including educational and career goals. For example, one educational goal for myself is to maintain no less than a B average in each of my courses. Of course, I would love to maintain an A average, but that goal is not as......
