Writing Skills Lesson
For Monday, September 8, 2010
[About 45 minutes]
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to show that a sentence I a complete thought and has two parts by identifying complete sentences as well as identifying the two parts of the sentence that enables it to be complete with a minimum of 80% on the activities.

Key Academic Vocabulary: 1. Complete sentences-sentences with both a naming of something or someone and the part where the something or someone is doing something.
Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed by the three activities they have completed and showing a Mastery of at least 80%.

Anticipatory Set (Review, Preview, Hook): (5 minutes)
 Essential Questions 1. We have been working on bettering our sentences so today we are going to continue by doing some activities where we look for complete sentences and cross out incomplete ones and then another activity that we are finding the two major parts which make a complete sentence whole.
Input (Model and Think Aloud): (5 minutes) 1. I want each of you to identify sentences that are not complete. 2. I will write the sentences in two different ways and I want you to tell me if they both have a “someone or something” in the sentence to identify them and also “something they are doing” in the sentence.

Guided Practice and Check for Understanding (We do): (5 minutes) 1. I need someone to give me a short sentence that we can work with. (Six words or less.) 2. How do I write that sentence correctly? 3. What is the “someone or something” in the sentence? 4. What is the “something they are doing”? 5. Write a new sentence and ask the same questions. (This question will not have one of the items) 6. Excellent work.

Grouping: 1. Whole Group: The class will be working the whole group during the input and guide practice. 2. Individual: The student’s workbook pages on their own.

Independent Practice (You do): (25 minutes) 1. Students will complete three activity sheets on their own. 2. They will first complete the “What is a Sentence? activity. 3. Then they will complete the “Parts of a Sentence” activity. 4. Finally they will complete the “Put It Together” activity. Interventions/Extensions: 1. If students struggle with the activity, I will assist them on working with the pages to complete them and also give examples. 2. If students excel and want to make the project more meaningful, I will have them make additional complete and incomplete sentences.

Modifications/Accommodations: 1. I will assist students by giving them more time to complete as well as assisting the others with more examples.

Closure: (Leftover time; 3-5 minutes) 1. How do we make a complete sentence?
