The Task of Writing a History

...5. The task of writing a history (撰写历史的使命) The task of writing a history of our nation from Rome’s earliest days fills me, I confess, with some misgivings and even though I was confident in the value of my work, I should hesitate to say so.(我承认,尽管有着些许担忧,但我仍肩负着从罗马时代早期就沿袭下来的记录历史的使命。 I am aware that for historians to make extravagant claims is, and always has been, all too common: Every writer on history tends to look down his nose at his less cultivated predecessors, happily persuaded that he will better them in point of style, or bring new facts to light. But however right that may be, I shall find satisfaction in contributing, not, I hope, ignobly, to the labor of putting on record the story of the greatest nation in the world. Countless others have written on this theme and it may be that I shall pass unnoticed amongst them. If so, I must comfort myself with the greatness and splendor of my rivals, whose work will rob my own of recognition.(如果事实确是如此,我会用对手的伟大和光鲜来安慰自己,尽管他们抢走了那些本属于我的赞誉。) My task, moreover, is an immensely laborious one. I shall have to go back more than 700 years, and trace my story from its small beginnings up to these recent times when its ramifications are so vast that any adequate treatment is hardly possible. I...

...http://clep.collegeboard.org/exam. Check with your librarian about locating study aids relevant to the exams you plan to take. These supplementary materials may include videos or DVDs made by education-oriented companies and organizations, language tapes and computer software. And don’t forget that what you do with your leisure time can be very educational, whether it’s surfing current-events websites, watching a PBS series, reading a financial newsletter, or attending a play. 3. Find a good place to study. To determine what kind of place you need for studying, ask yourself the following questions: Do I need a quiet place? Does the telephone distract me? Do objects I see in this place remind me of things I should do? Is it too warm? Is it well lit? Am I too comfortable here? Do I have space to spread out my materials? You may find the library more conducive to studying than your home. If you decide to study at home or in your dorm, you might prevent interruptions by other household members by putting a sign on the door of your study room to indicate when you will be available. 4. Schedule time to study. To help you determine where studying best fits into your schedule, try this exercise: Make a list of your daily activities (for example, sleeping, working, eating, attending class, sports or exercise) and estimate how many hours a day you spend on each activity. Now, rate all the activities on your list in order of their importance and evaluate your use of time...

...assignment in one week and that same week you had also promised a friend that you would meet at the Aquarium for one day that week. Assume that this assigned work involves reading a 300 page report, writing a summary of findings and preparing a presentation. Is it possible to do everything without stressing yourself out? Also, comment on the quality of your work and life during that week. What could the manager have done differently? According to the 80/20 rule, only 20 percent of the work produces 80 percent of the value; and the most important 20 percent of the work should be spent on the important task. By using the time matrix, I would analyze and consider that, the assignment is important and urgent, and visit the Aquarium with my friend is important but not urgent. I would put my time and effort finishing the assignment first; and have my visit to the Aquarium with my friend in the weekend if I could finish the assignment beforehand. Everyone takes stress in a different way; and I think it is easy to get stress nowadays because most employers want their employees to have high productivity all the time. It is possible to do everything without stressing out by seeing the stress as a eustress; and using the 80/20 rule and time matrix. It is important to prioritize the tasks, have a good planning of time spent, and follow the plan.
