NIMS and the Incident Command System

The way this nation prepares for and responds to domestic incidents is about to change. It won't be an abrupt change; best practices that have been developed over the years are part of this new comprehensive national approach to incident management known as the National Incident
Management System (NIMS). But it will change and for the better.
Developed by the Department of Homeland Security and issued in March 2004, the NIMS will enable responders at all jurisdictional levels and across all disciplines to work together more effectively and efficiently. Beginning in FY 2006, federal funding for state, local and tribal preparedness grants will be tied to compliance with the NIMS.

One of the most important 'best practices' that has been incorporated into the NIMS is the
Incident Command System (ICS), a standard, on-scene, all-hazards incident management system already in use by firefighters, hazardous materials teams, rescuers and emergency medical teams.
The ICS has been established by the NIMS as the standardized incident organizational structure for the management of all incidents.

Although many agencies now use various forms of ICS, there is considerable uncertainty about
NIMS ICS and the impact it will have on systems and processes currently in place. These are important questions because one of the FY 2005 requirements for implementing NIMS is
"institutionalizing the use of ICS, across the entire response system." This paper is intended to provide an historical perspective on the development of ICS, explain how NIMS ICS works, describe how it is different from previous systems, and discuss the future of NIMS ICS training.

...1.) If you were selling home electronics equipment, do you think you would be most likely to suggest the purchase of related, new or better quality merchandise? Explain the reasons for your answer. In suggestion selling, a salesperson can suggest related, new or better quality merchandise with a sale. If I were selling home electronics equipment, I would first need to determine the needs of my customer before I can suggest the purchase of related, new or better quality merchandise. First I would speak to the customer and ask questions regarding what kind of product they are looking for before suggesting anything for them in order to diagnosis their needs. Once a customer decides on a product they don’t want to be confused by the multitude of other products that are one the market; this is where the sales person comes in and is able to assist them. Consider the example of a customer purchasing a television; there are costs, size, and quality to think about. I believe when wrapping up a sale it is best to offer the buyer additional items to complement and enhance their purchase. This will add value to their purchase and our relationship as a buyer and seller because I will be assisting them in making their purchase complete and they will be leaving my electronics store feeling satisfied with their purchase. 2.) Psy 300 Written Assignment 5

...2012-03-PSY-300-OL009 Identify and describe the four (4) types of suicide that Emile Durkheim delineated. Include in your description the particular way in which people who commit each type of suicide are connected to their society. Emile Durkheim’s study led him to establish the four categories of suicides we know today, the first being Egoistic suicides. These are the result of excessive "individuation", or isolation from the social group as a whole. A lack of social integration will lead an individual to possibly take their life due to loneliness or depression. Durkheim found out that males, usually the single ones, were much more likely to commit suicide than those with better social connections (customs, jobs, and families). Males are more likely, as well, to seek out an individual life away from a community, which can lead to depression and killing oneself. Egotistic suicide is committed by people who are not supported by membership in a cohesive social group (www.sociologyindex.com). They are often loners. Extremely wealthy people are easily cut off from everyday society and don’t have a lot of support from society. These people tend to make and live by their own rules, for this reason if they begin to entertain suicidal thoughts it is hard for them to “shake it” (p. 219). The people who commit egotistic suicide may also believe that they have concurred everything and that there is “nothing else,” for him or her to do. No more goals, nothing else...
