After the date, they both went over to Em’s house, to find a bunch of Officials confiscating artifacts from every house. Xander announced to Cassia that he’d hide her compact to save it, but Cassia gave him Ky’s compass instead. That night she received a napkin from Ky that had illustrated another self-portrait with a rain concept. Xander later reveals where he hid the compass; it was buried under Ky’s flowerbeds. When it was time to hike again, Cassia was partnered up with Ky to complete an obstacle and Livy was pretty jealous to hear about this. Along the way through the obstacles, Cassia told him about how Xander hid his compass while Ky told her about how worried he was about her in return. The Official had announced that her sorting test score was the highest of the year and every department wants her to work for them. She also stated that the Officials also knew her feelings towards Ky. The woman wants Cassia away from Ky or else they would have to bring him back to the Outer Provinces. Cassia stated her opinion and said that “people should be able to choose who they Match with,” but she teases her and says “Would you say that people should be able to choose how many children they have, and where they want to live? Or when they want to die?” in response. Cassia then wakes up to hear the sound of screaming as a result of all the maple trees being torn down by the Officials in Mapletree Borough. Her mom believes that this action was a warning for Cassia. When she went hiking with Ky again, she told him about the Officials being aware of them, but Ky already knew about this since he had a little talk with them as well. He wasn’t really concerned about it though and tells Cassia that he got her a late birthday present, which was a written “Do Not Go Gentle” poem. Ky then places his lips onto Cassie’s
