Baseball in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic or “Republica Dominicana” is located in Central American and takes up two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which also includes Haiti. As of 2012, the population of the country is 10,088,598 with a growth rate of 1.31%. The capital of this Spanish speaking

country is Santo Domingo, which has a population of over 2 million people. The Dominican Republic is a representative democracy and the current president is Danilo Medina. Because of the countries rising unemployment rate and plummeting economy, many young children and teens look to baseball as a way to make it out of there and support their families. Baseball first started in the Dominican Republic after the Cubans migrated there during the “Ten Year War” and brought baseball with them. The first teams in the country were formed by 1895. After the sport circulated in the country for about 30 years, teams in the Dominican Republic were now playing other Caribbean teams as well as teams from North America. Many greats, including Satchel Paige from the Negro Leagues traveled to the country to play against the best they had to offer. In 1956, Ozzie Virgil signed with the New York Giants, becoming the first Dominican player in the Major Leagues of the United States. Virigl quickly opened the eyes of other teams to the talent that was available in the Dominican. Currently, there are six teams in the Dominican league, which runs from October to February. Recent data shows that about 30% of the players in the MLB are of Latin American descent. In 2009, 396 Dominican players were signed in the MLB, with an average signing bonus of $94,023. In the MLB the average salary is $3.3 million, which shows that the pool of talent in the Dominican Republic can be reached relatively cheaper. With the amount of talent available in the Dominican Republic, all 30 Major League teams have opened academies there for young boys. Once a player reaches the age of 16 in the Dominican Republic, they are legal to be signed by an MLB team. However, in 2000, Charles Farrell, an investigator hired by the MLB to study the academies, came back with very poor reviews of these facilities. Many rooms meant for two to three people had ten people sleeping in them, and they ate cheese sandwiches for dinner. One author, Arturo J. Marcano, said that the facilities were comparable to sweatshops. Many of these academies did not employ athletic trainers or even necessary medical supplies. Which may explain the death of 18-year-old Yewri Guillen, who had just signed a contract for $30,000 with the Washington Nationals. Guillen died from bacterial meningitis, a very treatable disease. Because of all the bad reviews MLB teams heard about the facilities, within the past 5 years, many teams have spent millions on remodeling the facilities. Some teams include the Mariners, Cubs, Rockies, Indians, and Pirates. All new facilities have 2 or more fields, with each team spending at least $2.5 million. Newer facilities also offer many educational services for the young teens. An estimated 34.4% of Dominicans live below the poverty line and the unemployment rate is estimated at 14.7%. This leaves many people eager to get out of the country and move on to a better life. Baseball serves as passageway to this new beginning for many Dominicans. One thing that’s for sure is that the rising number of Dominicans coming to the MLB is not going to slow down any time soon. In 2013, the Dominican Republic won the World Baseball Classic with a team that featured 20 players currently in the MLB. The combined salary of these players for 2013 was $104,590,000.

...In class we had our first group negotiation, which proved to be a very challenging exercise. There were two teams, a labor union and factory management. The factory management wanted stricter rules and lower labor rates while the labor union wanted good benefits, higher wages, and less regulation. In addition to having team interests we also had individual interests. For example, I was an employee who worked at the factory 30 years so my interest was to have less regulation and to have higher benefits. Although each of us, had a desire to win, and had our own interests that could have made the negotiation distributive, the best approach was an integrative approach. This negotiation was distributive in nature since it had to do with getting the “most” or “least” points yet it did not have to be. Since my team knew that a distributive approach would not lead us anywhere we decided to use an integrative strategy. For example, the other side was not going to give us a substantial increase in benefits regardless of our options so we needed to find a way to accumulate points a different way. Therefore, we began pushing for higher wages and we were able to get a fifteen cent increase to give us 3 points, we required that we signed the labor clause (+2), slight increase in benefits (+1), weak regulation( -1), and one management regulation ( -1), etc. Overall, as a team we accomplished a gain of 7 points.
