You Got a Friend

WHEN YOUR DOWN, AND TROUBLED
AND YOU NEED SOME LOVE AND CARE
AND NOTHING, OH NOTHING IS GOING RIGHT
JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND THINK OF ME
AND SOON I WILL BE THERE
TO BRIGHTEN UP
YEAH EVEN YOUR DARKEST NIGHT

YOU JUST CALL OUT MY NAME
AND YOU'LL KNOW WHEREVER I AM
I'LL COME RUNNING, TO SEE YOU AGAIN
WINTER SPRING SUMMER OR FALL
ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS CALL
AND I'LL BE THERE, YES I'LL BE THERE
YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND

IF THE SKY, HIGH ABOVE YOU
SHOULD GROW DARK AND FULL OF CLOUDS
AND THAT OLD, , ,
COLD WIND SHOULD BEGIN TO BLOW
JUST KEEP YOUR HEAD TOGETHER
AND CALL MY NAME OUT LOUD YEAH
PRETTY SOON I'LL BE KNOCKING ON YOUR DOOR

YOU JUST CALL, OUT MY NAME
AND YOU YOU KNOW WHEREVER I AM
I'LL COME RUNNING, TO SEE YOU AGAIN
WINTER SPRING, SUMMER OR FALL
ALL YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS CALL
AND I'LL BE THERE, YOU KNOW I'LL BE THERE

HEY AINT IT GOOD TO KNOW
YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND
WHEN PEOPLE CAN BE SO COLD
THEY'LL HURT YOU, AND DESERT YOU
THEY'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL IF YOU LET THEM
AH YEAH BUT DON'T YOU LET THEM!

YOU JUST CALL OUT MY NAME
AND YOU KNOW WHEREVER I AM
I'LL COME RUNNING, TO SEE YOU AGAIN
WINTER SPRING SUMMER OR FALL
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CALL
AND I'LL BE THERE
YOU KNOW I'LL BE THERE
YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND
YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND
AINT IT GOOD TO KNOW YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND

...the years. I had friends that I was forced to hang out with and some that just grew with me and now we are in same school or classes. 2. Tell about a time when your friends’ opinions were different than your parents’ and how you felt about it. There have been a lot of times where my friends made fun of me because of my parent’s decision to not allow me to do specific things. I had a time where my mother told me “No” I could not attend something because she did not know my friends parents well enough. I was mad but I knew that I had to listen to my mother. 3. How did your ability to manage your emotions change from elementary school to middle and then to high school? Well, I have managed my emotions to be truthful by knowing that I only have a few years left to living with my mom, then I can do anything I want to. I will be 18 and not have to worry about what I am told by my parent or sister. 4. Was your parents’ or your friends’ view of you more important to you when you were a teenager? I am a teenager now and I would probably say that my friends view are more important because I am with them every day and I see them every day. I choose on if I want to speak to them or not. 5. Of Mice and Men

...‘Of Mice and Men’ is a novel about two men and their struggle to reach their dreams of owning their own ranch. George Milton and Lennie Small are best friends, and in despite of their differences they still manage to work together, travel together and tackle anything that gets in their way. Steinbeck uses nearly all of the characters in this novel to stress the importance of having a friend. The novel ironically starts off in Soledad, which means ‘Solitude’ but when translated into English it means lonely. George and Lennie are anything but lonely when they are together ‘guys like us, that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world… but not us, they aint got nothing to look ahead too. We got a future; we got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us’. They know that they always have each other’s back. They both care about each other, ‘because I got you to look after me George, and you got me’. Although George and Lennies friendship isn’t reciprocal, as George does far more for Lennie, they still stand by each other through right or wrong. Showing that through anything they take nothing more seriously than their friendship. ‘The incident in Weed’ where Lennie was accused of raping a girl, exemplifies the fact that Lennie did wrong but George is willing to look past it because their friendship is too strong. George and Lennies relationship is so rare because it is the only friendship in the novel, let alone true friendship. Nobody else on the ranch has a friendship...

Giles Corey's Response To 'Name Names' By Arthur Miller

...In act two, Giles Corey was asked to “name names” in the problematic situation that he got himself into. Giles came into the courtroom accusing Thomas Putnam of “killing his neighbor for land.” Thomas isn't the one killing for his neighbor's land. He had his daughter Ruth cry witchcraft of poor little George Jacobs so he could get hung for witchcraft. Just for Thomas Putnam to get his land. When Giles came into the courtroom telling the court about his theory he has about Thomas, He said that “a friend” told him about Thomas “killing his neighbor.” So the court simply asked Giles to “name names” of his friend. Giles then refused to tell them his name because he knew his friend was going to get in trouble if he told on him. Giles never told...

The Wave

...couple of students and a teacher named Ben Ross. The students you get to know are, Laurie Saunders, Amy Smith, David Collins, Robert Billings, Brian Ammon, Carl Block and Alex Cooper I would say that Laurie Saunders is the main character, because it’s often in her perspective you see things. She’s also the one who doesn’t really believe that the wave is a good thing and that makes her different from the others. Amy Smith is Laurie's’ friend who is a little bit shy and kind of lives in Laurie’s shadow. She’s like the third wheel to Laurie and her boyfriend David, she seems to be interested in David’s friend but is to shy to do anything. Ben Ross is the teacher who introduced the Wave to the students. He seems to be a really good teacher that everyone likes and has a wife that loves him. When he wants to do something he dedicates his life to it. David Collins is a guy who plays football and is Laurie’s boyfriend. He seems to be a funny guy who wants to help his football team that sucks. So he introduces the Wave to the team and it seems to work pretty good. Robert Billings is a bullied guy that nobody likes. He is the one who gets most dedicated to the Wave because it makes him one of the gang because everyone is equal in the Wave. You haven’t heard so much about Brian Ammon, but he is David’s friend and plays in the football team together with David. Carl Block and Alex Cooper are best friends and works at the Grapevine with Laurie, the are funny guys who...

Short Story Singapore

...Useless flies don’t do nothing but annoy the hell outta ya. So I got up on a dark august morning. Pouring out as usually, but then again when isn’t it rainin in Singapore . I could hear the thunderin’ outside. The storms were coming closer. They had been traveling the whole night to get here; of all of Singapore , they had to pick here to settle down for the day. Just my luck I guess. I didn’t choose to be in this war, actually im not even in the war yet and I already lost my right testicle to it. Stupid private had to go be a hero and try to show off. He took a Desert Eagle, loaded it , spun around 5 times and before he even got done finishing the final turn, that stupid idiot went and fired that blasted fine piece of machinery right into my ball sack. They operated on me the next mornin’. I got dragged into the infirmary and the nurse said “ Durnet Charlie, cant you ever stay outtta trouble?” “ Sir no sir, this time it wasn’t my fault sir” “ And the time you jumped into the pond with your rifle and messed it so bad that all you had in the end was a water squirt gun? No, that wasn’t your fault neither was it?” “Well sir, I guess I had a little to do with that one….”  They all make fun of me here. For one I got a lazy eye, they call it exotropia or somethin’. Don’t laugh, its not funny, I’m getting it fixed though, I swear, soon’s I get ten thousand dollars. Damn near expensive, you’d think they’d give me a break, you know, because it’s a congenital thing. They don’t though. Its...

Notes from of Mice and Men

...traditions in the early church. Matthew has seven petitions, while Luke has only five.iii But Luke alone follows the recitation of the Lord's Prayer with a fascinating parable about the potential limits of friendship in the middle of the night. The point of the parable seems to be that if one is persistent in asking something of a friend, even when it's very inconvenient, one's petitions will be answered. How much more will one be blessed, then, if one is persistent in praying to God, our heavenly Parent?iv John Steinbeck's short novel Of Mice and Men is all about friendship in the middle of the night -- that is, under very difficult circumstances of rural poverty during the Depression. Following my sermonic theme of the last couple of weeks -- not only loving God with all of one's heart, mind and soul but also loving one's neighbor as oneself -- I'd like to explore Steinbeck's understanding of friendship with you this morning. Ultimately, I hope it will illuminate what it means existentially to knock at the door and then have it opened unto us. For those of you who haven't read Of Mice and Men recently, let me remind you of the basic plot: Two friends named George and Lennie are migrant farm workers, looking for employment near where Steinbeck grew up in Salinas, California. Lennie is huge, strong and mentally challenged. George is the brains of the duo as they travel from ranch to ranch. They have their own version of...
