Race to The Top
“The strong do what they have to do and the weak accept what they have to accept”.-(Thucydides). Thucydides was a Greek philosopher, but was also a father of political realism. This quote shows the true reality of society. People's main focus in life is to get success, and how they get it is almost like a race. Many people; not all, have a different mindset than others but that does not necessarily mean one is better than the other. Human nature is based on three things; competitiveness, selfishness, and aggression. The basis of human nature is people not caring about their consequences because they are too focused on getting ahead.

It's no secret that when people want something, they'll get it, the only problem with that is the matter of how they got it. People might brand this society as competitive, and that represents it almost perfectly. This quote shows us how self-worth is something everybody lacks and how people judge others on where they're at in life, “Your value is defined by what you’ve done.”(Kohn) Competition means that one person can succeed, but only if others fail. Something that should be learned throughout the years is to always put yourself first but not to hurt others while doing it, and somehow that concept is long gone in society. Many studies have shown that the way people view themselves is based upon other people's opinions. Society doesn't care if people are left behind, as long as they're ahead then that's all that matters. ”This competitive drive built into us has caused humans to go to war with one another—killing each other in the process. In the modern era, competition has been significantly tempered in its lethality.”(Kovis) For example, let's say two people are applying for a job, but they only need one person. One of them is going to push harder and use what they have against them to put one of them ahead. Which then leads them to being selfish.

People always want to take care of themselves before anyone else, and though that's not a bad thing it's also not a good thing. When people try to reach their goal, they push out everyone that gets in their way. With the others they tend to just forget about them and act as if they don't exist. Were all selfish in our own way, some more than others but still selfish. The people in this society don't think how their actions can affect not only them but people worldwide. For example, all the school shootings that have recently been happening. From just one person doing an unjustified act, it affected almost the whole nation. Why, because their “mentally ill” or “they don't like that race.” It is seen as people doing it for the hell of it. The pain that families, friends, co workers, and boyfriends/girlfriends have to go through because that person felt like it was their “duty”. A quote from the movie “Rope” by Alfred Hitchcock that stood out to me was, “Good and evil, right and wrong were invented for the ordinary average man, the inferior man, because he needs them.” This says that the wealthy demean the poor, because without them, they would be nothing. People are selfish because they have everything they want and don’t want anyone else to take it, and only save the best for themselves. Although people may claim to be independent, there was someone struggling to make sure they got to where they are. To back that up, some relationships between parents and their kids. “Part of the work of bringing up children to live in a social world is helping them begin to understand that other people have feelings and needs that must be respected.” (Barth). A mother will carry their kid for 9 months, and will go through so much pain just to make sure they're healthy, well and to raise them the best they could. The kids grow up thinking they got to where they are by themselves, as if they had no guidance whatsoever. In some cases this may be true, but it still falls onto them because they are the ones who chose that path. They had the decision of working hard or hardly working.

What is it that makes society so aggressive? Could it be the horrible economy, the police brutality, or even the lack of respect everyone is given? It could be anyone of those but moral of it all, society is aggressive. This quote has meaning to it, and has to be broken down to understand. “The theory also predicts that venting aggressive energy should make us less aggressive.”(Kohn) When people are sad/depressed, some tend to turn to people to talk about it but others keep to themselves. Both decisions can be dangerous to society. Often people in this society tend to doubt this rather than take time to focus on the truth. For example, when facing an unsolvable problem, people tell their friends hoping they can help but just like them. they can't do anything about it. They put them in an uncomfortable situation making them feel bad for you and themselves. Now let's say they do help, they now know what's your weak point and what breaks you. In society, most people feed off weakness in order to get ahead. Thats why its important to not trust everybody who comes into your life. Now there's people who keep to themselves, and although that's a smart choice it can also be a problem. People can only take so much before they had enough. All this anger builds up inside them which then leads them to doing something harmful, affecting not only themselves but other people. This quote in the book has so much depth; “She saw the man's face twisted close to her own as if he were going to cry and she murmured, "Why you're one of my babies. “You're one of my own children!", She reached out and touched him on the shoulder. The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest.”(O’Connor):”A Good Man is Hard to Find. It just shows that he had a hard childhood and had so much built-up. When someone tries to break a wall they built, they act out.

Society can be described as many different things, whether it be good or bad. People talk about society thinking they have it all figured out when in reality they don’t know right from wrong. People don't take time to realize how their actions affect not only themselves but people around them and some who they don't even know. A perfect example for this would be; a school shooting. When a school shooting occurs, it takes affect not only in that state, but worldwide. Society doesn’t realize how much of an impact we take from this. Parents are too scared to send their kids to school, let alone walk somewhere by themselves. All this from just one person doing an injustice act. So we come right back to saying, society doesn't really care what's happening, just as long as it's not to them.

Born Into Brothels

...Documentary Film “Born Into Brothels” Response Essay Academy award winner “Born Into Brothels” (2004) directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kaufmann takes place in Calcutta’s Sonagachi Red Light District in India. The film starts with a close up shot of a young girl’s face. All throughout the beginning, lots of transitions are used by the editor. The scenes switch back and fourth of the busy street where women line up to sell themselves for money, then the focus is on the children’s face again. The innocence shows in their eyes, but they already know what happens behind closed doors, and they know soon it’s their turn to “join the line”. The scenes are filled with still images of the residents of the Red Light District. The film depicts a hard life for these women and their children. It saddens me deeply that this is the fate of many girls in impoverished countries. Without help many of these precious children will be prostituting themselves soon, because they are forced by their ignorant parents and their poverty. What a clever way to make this film! To live with them and form a friendship during the filming process, and to help these children to not end up like their mothers did. A lot of b-roll footage and the children’s photos are shown throughout the film. The camera follows the children around in a Cinema verite fashion to capture the action. The footage is shaky but the content of the film is so powerful it doesn’t matter. The film has the feel of a home video...

Born Into Brothels Film Analysis

...Born into Brothels is a documentary focusing on the lives of a group of children who were born and live in the “red light” district of India, specifically the children of prostitutes. The documentary was well received by critics and won multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. With such positive reception, it is important to examine what made this documentary so successful; its success can be broken down into two main components, method of delivery and subject matter. The film is shot almost entirely by a single camera, with no additional cameramen or microphone equipment. Much of the footage from the early part of the film was not intended to be included in the documentary, but was a side note of the Zana Briski’s original intent filming her experience in the red light district of India. However, as she got to know the children she began focusing the filming more on them and their situation. This leads the camera work related to the children in the early part of the file to be very rough, as Briski is often holding the camera while trying to interact with the children. When Briski is not holding the camera it is in a stationary position filming her, so it cannot capture the children’s part of the scene easily, only their voices. This is one of the film’s strengths, as it gives a first person feel to the storytelling, placing the viewer with the children and in the city just as Briski experienced it rather than just observing it in travel log...

Born Into Brothels Analysis

...Zana Briski’s Born into Brothels is a documentary that portrays the lives of multiple children of prostitutes in India who face extreme verbal, emotional, and physical abuse on a daily basis. They face it so often it makes you wonder what is to gain for their so-called, “superiors”. There is a very similar situation in the book sold where a young girl named Lakshmi faces similar abuse, but hers also entails the desecration of her pride and emotional stability. The author of the book Patricia McCormick helps shed some insight on how people may profit from their wrongdoing on others. To begin, almost directly after Lakshmi is being traded off into slavery, she gets taken advantage of and is not only being used but also being abused physically...

The country has been an associated member of the European Community since 1964, following the signing of the Ankara Agreement in 1963. Modern Day Hipster

...Modern Day Hipsters If you try to ask a hipster this question ‘”What is a Hipster?” he or she probably won’t have an answer and might not even consider themselves one” (Faulkner). Most hipsters do not consider themselves hipster because it has “quickly became a badge of shams” (Wise). Today, people largely see hipsters as “pretentious, fake and self-aggrandizing” and no one wants to be put under a label that has come to mean something negative (Wise). Modern day hipsters are extremely different from the 1940s hepsters, which was what they were called back then, but they have influenced the music that is listened to now and the fashion styles that are worn today. Hipsters all started out in the 1940s when jazz was just starting off. “Early jazz musicians used “hep” for anyone who was in the know” about the culture that was the beginning of something new (Faulkner). The fans of jazz were known as hepcats but Cab Calloway defined the word hepcats as “a guy who knows all the answers, understands jive” so he used the word hepsters instead to describe the people of jazz instead (McKay). This soon caught on and later turned into hipsters. In the 1940s, jazz was becoming more popular, and as swing was getting slowly replaced by jazz music, hep cats morphed into hipsters. Jazz grew and started attracting lots of people, especially “lower-class white youth” (Faulkner). They were all in search of something new, and jazz was just that. Even though it was mainly performed by African-Americans...

Geert Wilders Moet Vrijgesproken Worden

Management of Ethical Desision

...Generally, people try to win the hearts of others to get the benefits and giving advantage to people as in Segon and Booth (2011, 16) which states that in western country gift giving is considered as bribery Asia is considered as a friendly action. In this case, a manager of the Australia Mining Corporation company needs to make an ethical decision whether to purchase a luxury gift. Since received information that gift giving able to secure the contract between the Asian Company. The ethical decision making models are utilitarian, moral rights and justice. This essay will be discussing on whether the manager should purchase a gift while negotiating a cross culture business. Moral right is not suitable because moral is one behavioral value base on certain criteria or conduct that is acceptable by the society (Boganovic, Cingula and Ivanisevic 2014, 80). In this case the humanity right is not being considered in the decision making process. If using transposition consideration, the Australia mining sector manager becomes the receiver and received an expensive and luxurious gift. Surely, none of the receiver will reject it. Moreover, the contract benefits company and stakeholder. Both company are able to do culture exchange. In additional, company should consider profit instead of humanity rights. Profit is more important to the company. If the manager considers humanity rights is more important the company will not be improve. Manager will be too scare to take risk and being...
