Zombies! What is it about apocalyptic and dystopian fiction that grasps the reader or viewer? What hold do these genres hold over us, the appeal is undeniable as we root on the survivors in these inhospitable and nightmarish climes brought to life for our collective consumption. For that is it, isn’t it? Consumption, it is the defining characteristic of this past generation. We can’t seem to get enough of this horror, it is an escape from the doldrums of our everyday lives filled with endless trivialities, indeed, and these heroes of our fantasies have done away with these trappings of civilization, eschewing their old lives with disdain, now existing with lives nailed to their spines. They have bared life down to its constituent parts, discarding the meaningless, saving only that that truly matters. I think that in our heart of hearts we long to live free of this micromanaged world, embrace our darker sides, become survivors, become heroes. …show more content…
But the gems reveal themselves rather quickly as demonstrated by the meteoric rise of “The Walking Dead”. The creators of the franchise jumpstarted a dying genre, that of the Zombie Apocalypse. So much so that spinoffs are in production, and imitators abound. All trying to cash in on the mindless consumption of the horrid, as if we ourselves had become the mindless horde. Somewhere within each us the idea of watching a person actually devoured by another is fascinating, the repulsion one might expect; affected. The revulsion feigned, we just can’t get enough. Much is a byproduct of the desire to be a survivor, a warrior. Fearsome and self-sufficient, something our society discourages. The martial values being firmly placed in the purview of the military and the

Zombie Survival Guide Book Report

...Zombie Survival Guide The Zombie Survival Guide is a very excellent book. People think its only about zombies but that is wrong, it can also teach you life saving skills. Like if you had to live on your own in the woods this tells you how to start fires, how not to be seen. How to prepare, what to have, and what not to have. Teaches you how to make supplies, warning signs of situations, and what to avoid. The conflict of the story is that a zombie apocalypse breaks out, and this book helps you to survive. And this book is a list of do’s and don’ts. Everyone needs to know how to preserve, prepare, and execute; whether it’s zombies, dogs, or people. No one knows what can happen so saing there is no such thing and I don’t need to prepare are vital life changing mistakes. What happens if you wreck your car in the middle of nowhere and you have no knowledge of what to do? People say oh your smart you’ll be fine, but that’s because they think oh it won’t happen to me or I think I know everything I need to. But that’s where ignorance has gotten to people’s brains. Just because I’ve camped in my back yard and lived means I can do it in the middle of nowhere and chances are those people are going to die. Now compare that person to me if I had the book. Who do you think would live longer? The person that survived a child attack for the last smore at a bonfire, or the guy with the book of how to survive in the wild during a time of devastation and anarchy? I’ll leave it to you to decide...

The Global Post-Apocalypse

...The Global Post-Apocalypse Response Paper The foreign movie I watched is a French zombie movie called ‘La Horde’. I had actually watched this movie a few times with subtitles and when reading the assignment immediately thought of this film. This one review written by Felix Vasquez Jr mentions how it is not quite the same as other zombie movies due to lack of emphasis on the characters. ““La Horde” is one of the many zombie flicks that just doesn’t understand a good zombie movie has to be about the people in and around it and less about the zombies”. In this movie the zombies take center stage and you cannot get into the story. However it also mentions in this review how all the audience wants to see in a movie like this is gore. “Necks are chomped on, bodies pile up, and the zombies all look menacing as they gather around the high rise prepared to feast on whatever crosses their paths” This movie is based in Paris in 2008 around the exact same time the economy fell and the EU had to bail out fellow countries of the European union to the financial situation. This movie could be in context to what happened during the financial crisis. The characters in this movie done whatever they had to do to survive and to keep their friends alive. It also shows that sometimes you need make unlikely alliances to achieve something and in this case the police had to make an unlikely alliance to stay alive. The plot revolves around a group of policemen who embark on a mission seeking...

Zombies! Now What?

...is an instinct that is deeply imbedded in human nature. Without that drive, humans would of became instinct; instead, humans decided to evolve and become self sufficient. Currently, today’s society needs guidance, for they rely on technology. Society isn’t always ready for a disaster, especially one that seems impractical. Like any other survival plan, being prepared, planning ahead and knowing what you are doing are key factors in survival.  With the right knowledge, preparation and tools, humanity is completely capable of surviving a zombie apocalypse. Being prepared is a key factor to survival, and for many, forgetfulness and procrastination are the main reasons why they are not. The first step of being prepared is to know the surroundings of the area; whether its work, school, home, or a friend’s house, know the entries and exit ways of each setting and determine which the safest route is. This is important because being chased by a zombie can be distracting, confusing and horrifying all at once and can end horribly wrong; therefore, the need to know which way to go quickly and efficiently is important. Having a list of close friends, co-workers, family or neighbors is part of preparation as well, this is essential in survival because the knowledge base of a group is greater.”It is better to find people for your group that you already know have mental stability” (Brooks 91). Knowing which skills and knowledge each individual has and assigning them a duty will help...

Drezner Article Analysis

...begin to rise from the grave and attack the living, what thinking would -- or should -- guide the human response? How would all those theories hold up under the pressure of a zombie assault? When should humans decide that hiding and hoarding is the right idea? Serious readers might dismiss these questions as fanciful, but concern about flesh-eating ghouls is manifestly evident in today's popular culture. Whether one looks at films, video games, or books, the genre is clearly on the rise. According to conservative estimates, more than a third of all zombie films ever made were released in the past decade. Zombies are clearly a global phenomenon: Beyond the United States, there have been Australian, British, Chinese, Czech, German, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, and Norwegian zombie flicks. Zombie video games, including the Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead franchises, have also proliferated, attracting huge followings globally. And zombies have clawed their way to the top of book best-seller lists in the last decade with literature ranging from how-to survival manuals to reinterpretations of early Victorian fiction. "In the world of traditional horror, nothing is more popular right now than zombies," one book editor gleefully told USA Today last year. "The living dead are here to stay." This zombie boom is -- and should be -- taken seriously. For some international relations thinkers, the interest in all things ghoulish might represent an indirect attempt to get a cognitive...

Zombie Apocolypse

...surviving the zombie apocalypse. Initially, shelter must be established. A well concealed building, such as a prison, is an ideal shelter from zombies. It is large enough to accommodate a large body of survivors who are hopefully willing to join the fight against the army of the living dead. Gates, fences, and large open areas surrounding the facility make it easier to locate and fend off any zombies that try to breach the perimeter. The solid structure of the building itself will help further deter intruders. A high outlook post within the shelter will also need to be quartered; from which, a designated “spotter” can survey the surroundings for any posing danger. Additionally and unquestionably, food and water are necessities whether zombies are seeking your flesh or not. In order to maintain proper health and nutrition while fighting the undead, food, water, and any other desired supplies will need to be collected and stored. In the midst of the out breaking chaos sprung from the apocalypse, the necessary supplies can be looted from stores or other sources. A thorough plan of execution may come in handy to organize the quantity of each desired supply. Why Zombies Love Brains Essay

...Br-aaaaaa-in-ssss! Let's do a recap on why zombies love brains too much: 1. Brains contain memories, 2. Brains think of magnificent ideas and last but not the least, brains are tasty for it is the most mysterious body part! But what is "brain"? Brain is an organ of the body in the head that controls functions, movements, sensations, and thoughts. Yep, brains are absolutely like remote controls! It has 3 anatomical divisions: Forebrain that contains the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus, Midbrain, which is a part of the brainstem and Hindbrain that contains the pons, medulla oblongata and cerebellum. Cerebrum, cerebellum and the brainstem are considered as the three main parts of the human brain. Cerebrum is the largest part which makes up 85% of the brain’s weight. It is the “thinking” part of the brain and it controls your voluntary muscles – the ones that move when you want them to. So you can’t dance without your cerebrum! Cerebrum is also involved in remembering, problem solving and feeling. Next up is the cerebellum. The cerebellum sits at the back of your head, under the cerebrum. It’s a lot smaller than the cerebrum at only 1/8 of its size. But it’s a very important part of the brain as it controls balance and coordination. Because of your cerebellum, you can stand upright, keep you balance in biking or surfing and move around. Another brain part that's small but mighty is the brain stem, which is divided into midbrain, pons and medulla. The brain stem sits beneath...

Zombie Apocalypse

...Ten Reasons to Hope for the Zombie Apocalypse 1. You’ll never have to deal with your evil boss again. Unless, of course, she/he’s a zombie, in which case, you’ll get to bash her brains in (double win!). 2. When your kids ask you, “What’s for dinner?” you can sweetly reply, “go kill it yourself!” 3. You’ll finally get to test out your Tommy Knocker on some zombies, made by the one and only Zombie Fighter Jango! 4. All that knowledge you acquired from reading countless zombie book and weatching all the classic zombie movies will be put to good use (it’s not just entertainment!). 5. Your neighbors will finally stop complaining about your scraggly garden (I think a talent for killing plants is a sign that you’ll be able to kill zombies just as easily – it makes sense). 6. If the government shuts down, there will finally be a legitimate reason for it. 7. Maybe, just maybe, Daryl Dixon will come along, and you can impress him with your crossbow skills (amongst other things, *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*). 8. Twerking will be a thing of the past (one would hope). 9. Stupid diets like Atkins, South Beach, and juice cleanses will immediately go out of style. Twigs for everyone! 10. There will be a shortage of fossil fuels, and we won’t be polluting the environment at such a rapid rate (you’re welcome, Al Gore!). I hope I was able to brighten your day, now that you can add these to your list of reasons to anxiously await the zombie apocalypse. It’s all about silver...

Zombies

...Michael Collins English Composition 1 1010.01 Professor J. Caviezel 16 October 2013 Zombies These Days “By any observable metric, zombies are totally hot right now” (Drezner para 1). “Look at movies like ‘Warm Bodies’ and the coming ‘World War Z,’ the ratings for AMC’s hit series ‘The Walking Dead’ and $2.5 billion in annual sales for zombie videogames” (Drezner para 1). As time progresses, zombies seem to become a more prominent aspect of the American culture. Many people, along with thousands of experts, actually think that there could be a zombie apocalypse at some point in their lifetime. The primary cause of the zombie apocalypse popularity is gained through the entertainment that the media presents to casual audiences. The zombie craze originally started with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” This song set stage for zombie entertainment for the future. Over time, zombies have proven to “thrive in popular culture during times of recession, epidemic and general unhappiness” (Drenzer para 4). Since the United States is currently attempting to recover from a recession, zombies in entertainment are flourishing within American’s everyday lives. “The reason zombies are so powerful is that they capture an atheistic fear of the dead” (Marche para 4). Many experts say that this is one of the many reasons why the people like the shows so greatly and also why they prepare themselves for the worst (Gross para 25). As time has passed, zombies have highly impacted the entertainment...

You’ll find serial killers, witches, the boogey man, zombies, zombie babies, hologram pumpkins, trolls, frightening fairy tales, and raining octopuses (yes, I said octopuses). There are several that stand out for me, such as Neighbors: A voyeuristic couple is intrigued by their neighbors kinky bedtime habits, and decide to invite them over to ask about their secrets… and share a few of their own. In Dead Flames, two zombies discover each other as “Adam and Eve of the Apocalyptic garden.” In Lost Soles, a man’s obsession with shoes turns deadly. Modern Culture’s Fascination with the Undead

...as the mythology associated with zombies. I will also go into depth on the various literary identities that the two have produced throughout this generation. The essay will continue with a discussion on the most recent and ever so popular vampire films Twilight and “Let me in” and the TV series True Blood and why the latest X and Y generations seems to lack the fear people once had of these blood thirsty creatures. I will also discuss several of the most recent Zombie movies and how they’ve changed over the last two decades. Although zombie literature does not frequent the shelves of libraries and book stores, as do vampire literature. There is a zombie fiction novel written in 2006 called World War Z by Max Brooks, which became an immediate hit and a New York Times bestseller. Brooks had also authored the cult hit “The Zombie Survival Guide”, an exhaustively researched, zombie-themed parody of pop-fiction survival guide. I will also include sources indicating the US Government’s interest in zombie fiction and how the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has made use of this pop culture phenomenon to better inform the public on disaster preparation. In my conclusion, I will argue that the generation Xrs’ fascination with zombies, vampires and all things undead related is part of a search for immortality. In an age of increasing narcissism, identity crisis and denial of reality, generation X’s obsession with the undead seems to be a healthy distraction from the...

Zombie Sociology in Literature

...Zombie Outbreak in Literature Looking at literature, there are so many different genres and subgenres. When writing is involved, there are hundreds of possibilities and potentials to make an amazing piece that’ll be loved, hated, and talked about for years to come. There is a certain genre that has come into higher and higher power, that’s almost as well renowned as romance or adventure would be the horror genre. In horror there are so many amazing authors, capable of causing the reader to feel such intense emotions through just their writing. But unlike romance or adventure, these emotions are more so fear, anxiety, or paranoia. They write books or poems that leave people checking their closets, plugging in a nightlight, and hiding underneath their blankets to go to sleep at night. Some of the most amazing authors include H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Dean Koontz, and Peter Straub. All of them having different writing styles and stories, yet their pieces all yield the same results. Just like all the other genres, horror can also be broken down into different subgenres. This includes types like psychological horror, which leaves the reader questioning everyone’s sanity, even their own. There’s gothic, involving a mixture of psychological terror in romantic settings, including mysteries, ghosts, castles, decay, madness, hereditary curses, and death. Also on this list of subgenres is supernatural, the main cause of people seeing things out of the corner of their...
