A movie named “The Pursuit of Happyness” is inspired by the real life story of Chris Gardner, who struggled with homelessness while raising his toddler son. Chris is a single father since her wife no longer able to cope. His wife could not handle under the constant strain of financial pressure, so, she decided to leave and went to work in a restaurant in New York. He continues tenaciously to pursue his life and his son using every sales skill he knows. His top priority was to be a good father to his son, Christopher. Finally, he rose from being homeless to become a stock market tycoon and eventually as everyone knows he now is a multi-millionaire. From this inspirational movie, I need to choose any four scenes and do analysis based on the six theories, which are social morality, personality virtues, utilitarianism, egoism, the principle of duty and the principle of existentialism.

The first scene I chose is when Chris plays basketball with his son. His son says he really likes to play basketball, and wanted to become a famous basketball star. Then, he said to his son, “Don’t ever let somebody tell you, you can’t do something, not even me.” Scene closes. This dialogue from the scene makes people feel a father’s love, and it is the point impressive people. Based on his dialogue, it is clearly shown that he wants and teaches his son to practice the theory of egoism. It means that, Christopher must take consideration of his self-interest the most in making decision and doing something. Eventually, Chris forgot the theories of personality virtues which emphasis on character building and acquiring of personal attributes to obtain a good life. Once Christopher practices the theories of egoism, which only takes his own consideration on all decisions, at the same time, he practices selfishness which may trouble to other people. Parents should inculcate good virtues to their children from the young age.

Next scene I chose, while Chris is going to one more hospital that day, he calls his wife at work and tells her she needs to pick up their son from day care because he needs to sell the bone density scanners to pay their house rent and buy some groceries. That night he gets home and he is still carrying two bone density scanners. His wife is very angry and complains that she missed a shift at work because he was messing around. The scene ends. From this scene, Linda portrays the theories of egoism. She only considers her own interests. She angry and said she has missed her shift at work because he is messing around but she did not think that his husband actually did his responsibility as a head of the family to earn a living. In terms of the principle of duty, as a wife she should not get angry at her husband, but, conversely, she should support and give motivations to his husband to keep moving on. She has to understand his husband situations and business problem as well.
Moving to the next scene, when Chris and Jay Twistle, who is a manager for Dean Witter, sharing a cab. As Jay gets out from the cab and leaves Chris in the cab, Chris just realizes that Jay forgot to pay the cabby. He looks the fare meter then he looks in his wallet, seeing that he does not have enough money to pay the taxi fare, he jumps out of the car and starts to run away. He runs toward the subway and thinks he is in the clear until he heard the screaming cabby comes around the corner and still chasing him. The scene closes. From the theories of social morality views, Chris action that ran away from the cabby is not good because society’s need is more important and not individual. His action may cause conflicts and troubles to the cabby and also other people in around the subway. But from the views of the theories of egoism, he did the right action. He takes his own personal interest because he realizes that he could not pay the taxi fare. Furthermore, the cab should be paid by Jay as he is the one who wants to go to his destination.

The last scene I chose when he has to go for the interview wearing bad condition clothes and his body and face flecked with dry paint. The group of men interviewing him include Jay Twistle. They ask Jay if he is usually dressed that way and Jay tells that he was nicely dressed in a suit and tie every time they met. One of the interviewers asks Chris, "What would you say if I told you we once hired a man who came in without a shirt on?” Chris pauses but he able replies wittily, "Those must have been some really nice pants." He makes everyone in the room laugh. The scene ends. From the theories of utilitarianism his action is right because he did spontaneous humours that made all interviewers laughing. But based on the theories of egoism, his action is not right because he ignored his own interests. He makes other people laughing but deep inside his heart, he sad and thinks about his personal problems that should be solved. He should not hide his sorrow and speak frankly that he needs a job for his family.

To conclude all the analysis of the movie, all the theories are right or wrong depending on the situations and consequences. “The Pursuit of Happyness” which is based on the real life of Chris Gardner is one of the most motivational and inspirational movie. He had through many difficulties before he became a multi-millionaire today. Some of his actions may be wrong from any six of the theories views but it is for the sake of his family life. He did what a father should do for his son. He also said when he had children, “My children were going to know who their father was.” His son is his inspiration to keep him moving forward in their life.

The Pursuit of Happyness

...The Pursuit of Happyness Based on the true life events of Chris Gardner, now an American entrepreneur, investor, stock broker, author, and renowned speaker, The Pursuit of Happyness explores Chris Gardner’s ups and downs with homelessness in the early 1980’s. Gardner faces multiple struggles in his conquest to take care of his child as a single father, while also attempting to maintain a job and provide the basic necessities for primarily his son and himself when possible. Even as things begin to appear like they may be getting better for Gardner, they suddenly and continuously get much worse. However, through these crests and troughs in Gardner’s life, one can see Chris reflecting on and learning from his past, moving from a more individualized identity to a collective one, and displaying the spirit of generosity with what little he had. One of the most prevalent aspects of the movie from the beginning is Gardner learning from his past, more specifically his parents past, a theme also prevalent in Bordas’ text “Salsa, Soul, and Spirit”. In the text, Bordas uses the word Sankofa to mean reaching back and collecting experiences, values, and culture and to learn from them in order to avoid the drawbacks and stalemates of history. She says, “Sankofa rests on the foundation of the past, its feet are facing forward. This ancient symbol counsels us that the past is a pathway to understanding the present and creating a strong future.” (Bordas 28). Within the first few minutes of...

Throughout the movie money plays a pivotal role in the direction of the story. Money is revealed throughout the story as a matter, means, and measure. Matter. Project & Task Management: the Pursuit of Happyness

...Project & Task Management: The Pursuit of Happyness Project & Task Management: “The Pursuit of Happyness” “The Pursuit of Happyness” is a movie about an African American man, Christopher Gardner, and his journey to reach “happyness” in his life. Christopher was abandoned by his father as an infant and met his father for the first time when he was 28 years old. Because of this Chris vows to be nothing like his father when he has a child of his own. Chris and his son Christopher Jr. are homeless. He takes on a competitive unpaid internship as a stockbroker in hopes to be hired on as a full time employee, all while caring for his son. This movie is a story of determination and hope while being faced with disappointment and provocation. There are so many lessons that can be taken from Christopher Gardner and of those I’ve decided to use a clip from “The Pursuit of Happyness” and teach a lesson on project & task management. The scene that I used to teach my lesson is called: Cold Calling. This is where Chris Gardner demonstrates how to reduce wasteful activities in the office to make a bigger impact in his productivity. Out of necessity to care for his son, Chris has a shorter day and does what he can to make the most of the resources he has. In the clip as Chris is calling potential clients he doesn’t hang up the phone in between calls to save precious time. He also eliminates time wasted using the restroom by not consuming water during the day as well as time...

Self Concept in the Pursuit of Happyness

...Will Smith stars in the inspirational true story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman who is struggling to make ends meet. When his Girlfriend Linda walks out, Chris is left to raise their 5 year old son Christopher on his own. Chris determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker training program, where only one in twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With self-confidence and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend. Self-concept is a general term used to refer to how someone thinks, evaluates and perceives themselves. To be aware of oneself is to have a concept of oneself. Self-concept is our perception or image of our abilities and our uniqueness. At first one's self-concept is very general and changeable. As we grow older, these self-perceptions become much more organized, detailed, and specific." (Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo, 2013) Humanist psychologist Carl Rogers believed that there were three different parts of self-concept: 1. Self-image, or how you see yourself. It is important to realize that self-image does not necessarily coincide with reality. People might have an inflated self-image and believe that they are better at things than they really are. Conversely...

...money can buy happiness and if we have money we are living the good life. Even Aristotle would agree that money can’t buy happiness. But what if you are poor and struggling and trying to reach success because you need to support your family. Can that success buy happiness? Because when you are struggling and trying to make ends meet it can be frustrating. We can definitely look at the movie Pursuit of Happyness and try to think what would Aristotle think of the story and would he agree on the main character, Chris’s, definition of happiness. In the movie Pursuit of Happyness there is a guy name Chris Gardner who is trying his best to support his family by selling portable bone density scanners. And for Chris to be able to pay rent and daycare fees, he has to at least sell 2 scanners each month. Throughout the movie he has a hard time selling them and it gets to the point where he can’t pay his bills. In result of him not being able to pay his bills, his wife ends up leaving and he also gets evicted from his home and the only person he has left is his son Christopher (Pursuit of Happyness). So his only option to not live on the streets and to give his son a good life is to find a good paying job. When I was watching the movie, one scene that stood out was the scene when Chris was walking through the Financial District in San Francisco after a long day of trying to sell his scanners. But as he is walking he sees a man in a suit and tie stepping out of a nice sports car. So...

There are various languages in this world and those languages are used by people in different nations and ethnics. Different languages used by people in different places and communities are defined as language varieties (Hudson, as cited in Wardhaugh, 1992: 21). Teamwork and commitment to one another’s survival is vividly displayed throughout the text. “Who said one man can’t rescue another…We had changed from climbing to rescue and the partnership had worked just as effectively” (Simpson, 2004). The quoted text accurately represents the goals, commitment and desire to succeed shared by the two men on their decent from the mountain. Even through disaster, the commitment of the two men prevails which allows them to continue on even when the probable outcome does not seem favorable. The Sony Pictures film, ‘The pursuit of Happyness’, shares similar ideas of commitment evident throughout Joe Simpson’s text. “You got a dream... You gotta protect it. Pursuit of Happiness

...Film showing "Pursuit of happyness" paper The pursuit of happyness was mainly a movie about a hardworking father that is trying to give all the best for his son. As for selling processes, the salesperson forms a working relationship with his customers to be able to connect with the customer on a more personal level in order to know what kind of things they like, and how to approach them when they are to sell something. Also, I have learned that no matter how hard things get, I should always find a way to look at the brighter side of life and try harder to escape the misfortune that I am in; and that if I do my best, it will all pay off in the end. Another thing that I would like to point out in the movie is when Will Smith, whilst dialing the numbers of people during his internship, didn't put the handset back in the cradle. This to me was a symbol to not waste time, to do the work efficiently and to not spend time and extra work by putting it back. I also realized that by not showing buyers the personal feelings that you currently feel, and instead act like everything is okay, it may be more of plus since they won't be scared if you are tense while presenting a product. Customers would want a salesperson to be confident, and when they see otherwise, it may be more of a reason to turn you down. Also, as a student, having my parents alongside me is a reason why I never give up, to do my best. So that one day, I can give them a life they deserve, like Will smith did for his...
