...Derek Walcott’s “A Lesson for this Sunday” is a steady buildup from a masculine persona lazily remarking a summer’s day; however it quickly turns to a source of annoyance as the cries of children shatter the reflective mirror of paradise leaving him introspective and critical of their actions as they destroy a part of nature. The poem in itself is melodic, not with a particular rhyme scheme however but with the way Walcott wove his words. The poem elicits a theme of deep introspection, contemplation, death and philosophy of human nature. “A Lesson for this Sunday”, aside from being the title is a window of opportunity to view the poem at face, but a second read foreshadows the end conclusion. The first stanza follows in painting a picture of a lazy and beautiful summer day, specifically a Sunday that the persona is enjoying “In scansion gentler than my hammock swings”. He uses derivatives of the word idle in the first and last lines of the stanza “The growing idleness of summer grass”, “Since I lie idling from the thought in things,” along with the lack of punctuation emphasizes just how easy going and relaxed it is. However, the tone shifts immediately as the reader encounters the second stanza, “Until I hear the cries Of two small children hunting yellow wings.” The persona is disturbed, shaken, pulled from his meditative mood by the sounds of these children chasing a butterfly. In New England people wanted to start educating their children, and change their sinful nature (Senter, 2010, p. 5). Sunday school started hundreds of years ago, before child labor laws. Children were working during the week, and on Sundays they were not doing anything productive and people were worried (Senter, p. 7). The pastors at the church generally treated youth no differently than they did adults (Senter, p. 8). Many parents did not want their children to attend the Sunday school for fear of persecution (Senter, p. 5). This is how Sunday school started, and originally it was establish to teach youth the skills of reading the Bible. During the early 19th century, adults wanted to establish Bible lessons to keep youth out of trouble, and this evolved into youth having their own church service separate from adults (Senter). Pastors began to treat the youth as young adults, but not equal to adults (Senter). One current trend in some churches is having the youth in the same group as adults for part of the time, and then separate for the other part of the lesson. Elvis is smart and independent, having lost his mother when he was a young boy and growing up with a distant relationship with his father, Sunday. Throughout the novel, Elvis’s relationship with each character becomes important in defining Elvis’s character as a whole. Each character has a very distinct influence on Elvis and it is these different influences that shape him into the puzzled and distraught youth he is illustrated as in the novel. Elvis lives a different life when he is in Afikpo. In the first flashbacks, it is easy to see how close Elvis is with his mother, Beatrice. Beatrice is later revealed to be suffering from breast cancer and inevitable dies when Elvis is still young. But before she does, she makes full effort to teach her son everything necessary for him after she dies. Beatrice tells her mother, Oye, “I have taught him to sew, to iron, to cook, to read and write at a level beyond his age” (Abani 38). Beatrice’s teachings explains how Elvis is well beyond his years at age sixteen; he loves reading eminent works of literature and cares enough for his step-siblings to buy them food since their mother, Comfort, never would.
