In Massachusetts the demand for afterschool youth outreach programs is growing fast due to environmental and economic trends that have parents in a tough spot. Quality youth outreach afterschool programs offer kids a safe place away from home. Our textbook states the forming stage is characterized by a great deal of uncertainty about the group’s purpose, structure and leadership. Members “test the waters” to determine what types of behaviors are acceptable. After reading over the case study I was torn between the group being at the forming stage or the storming stage. The group does have purpose as they plan to create an after-school program which will improve school performance both by the students and the teachers. The group is structured as the Woodson Foundation and the school system will develop a new agency that will draw on resources from both organizations as well as a representative from the NCPIE. This is where the group comes up short from the storming stage as there is no leadership yet. They are still establishing ground rules such as: Will the new jobs be unionized? College campuses should allow students to practice parkour on school property because it is a great way to meet new people, promotes a healthy lifestyle, is safe when practiced correctly, encourages community involvement, and is practically free. Larger parkour training sessions, also known as "jams", are a great way to meet new people. Approximately 75 people showed up to participate at a "beginner's jam" hosted by Chicago Parkour on October 17th, 2009 at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Chicago Parkour Meetup). I myself attended this event, and met many new great friends that I now see on a regular basis for training. During the warmer seasons of the year, Benjamin "Strafe" Zumhagen, one of the leaders of Chicago Parkour, hosts what is known as the "Stego Jams" every weekend at Grant Park.
