A. Identification of Issues and Problems
Overview
The case is about people suffering from AIDS globally, especially in Brazil and India. In Brazil, almost half a million are affected with AIDS and millions more at high risk on acquiring it. This is due to the machistic society, where married man having marital affairs and woman not asking their husbands to use condoms because of fear of getting beaten and losing support. Also, the price of Condoms is expensive in Brazil compared to other countries. In India, 5 million are already infected with HIV 6 years after the first detection, which makes this country spreading the virus faster than in any country. But AIDS is not the primary concern due to other health problems. And some Indian states deny the existence within their areas. Tamil Nadu was the first stat is introduce AIDS education and awareness. The London International Group (LIG) is well known in its latex and thin-film barrier technology, which is used in Durex condoms. Durex is the only global condom brand and protecting its position by “feeling is everything”. LIG entered Japan with a joint venture with Okamoto Industries and promoting the Durex Avanti condoms, which is stronger than latex and can be made thinner and can make the experience more natural.

Identification of the Problems
1. Brazil
• Brazilians don’t like condoms, and females are afraid of getting beaten or loose support if they told their husbands to use it.
• Due to Brazil being a Catholic country, the church doesn’t tolerate the use of condoms.
• The price of condoms in Brazil is expensive compared to other countries.
• Most of the Brazilians are having multiple partners, especially for the males, Married or the youth.
• For the females, having HIV is the number one cause of death in child bearing.
• Most of the Brazilians, both male and female, don’t think that they are in risk in having HIV.
• In carnivals, there is higher usage of alcohol and may impair judgment especially in having safe sex.
2. India
• India is the fastest country to spread HIV having 5 million victims in 6 years since it was first detected.
• The states in India don’t prioritize AIDS prevention because of other health problems such as malaria and tuberculosis.
• Some states deny the AIDS problem, because prostitution and drugs doesn’t exist in their areas. They treat HIV as a western disease of decadence.
• The government hasn’t always able to meet the supply for condoms.

3. London International Group
• LIG is entering Japan. It is the first time that an international condom brand entered the Japanese Market.
B. Solutions
1. Brazil
• The government distributed free medicine and condoms and taught AIDS awareness especially in urban slums where the risk of having this disease is high.
Pros: It will decrease the number of infected people and risk of having AIDS.
Cons: Such program will require a large amount of resources and will need to train people.
• The public health officials in Sao Paolo state promoted the female condom to protect women and their children from AIDS.
Pros: It will decrease the number of infected people especially females and children.
Cons: The price of female condom will cost thrice the price of regular condoms.
• The family Health association made a petition to subsidies and cut taxes on condoms so that it will be accessible to poor Brazilians.
Pros: Cheaper condoms.
Cons: None
• Brazil’s Health ministry commits to distribute millions of condoms and free advices to prevent the spread of AIDS in carnivals where half naked women attract many spectators.
Pros: Same as other solution, it will decrease the number of infected people.
Cons: Will require a large amount of capital and will have to train people.
2. India
• The state of Tamil Nadu is training barbers to be frontline soldiers in the fight against AIDS. They give lectures and advices on AIDS and safe sex.
Pros: The method is Cost-effective and Innovative.
Cons: None.
• The state of Tamil Nadu introduced AIDS education in high school to increase awareness about the disease. The state is the first to set up a statewide information hotline.
Pros: It will increase AIDS awareness in the area.
Cons: Since the target is the whole population instead of the high risk groups, it will require a large amount of capital and Human resources.
• The AIDS fighters took advantage of the local culture to spread awareness. Some of the theaters are paid to screen AIDS awareness short before the main feature. In the country side where there are few theaters, movie mobiles plays music from well known movie soundtracks whose lyrics are re-written to increase AIDS awareness.
Pros: It will increase AIDS awareness.
Cons: Putting advertisements in theaters and in movie mobiles will cost money.
• With the funding of the State of Tamil Nadu, a nongovernmental agency trained prostitutes to spread information about AIDS and other sexually transmuted disease.
Pros: It will increase sexual awareness, especially in the customers of prostitutes.
Cons: It requires capital for prostitutes to be trained and they must be given incentives.
• The state of Tamil Nadu started sourcing condoms from other suppliers, but still condoms are too expensive to be given for free. The barbers will distribute a two-condom pleasure pack for 2 rupees and they will have a 25 percent commission.
Pros: The government will be able to meet the demand for condoms due to the 2 rupees per pack that will cushion the cost.
Cons: This did not attract many barbers, 30 percent of them refused to participate.
3. London International Group
• LIG focuses on education, sponsoring events and other educational initiatives to disseminate the safer sex message to governments, opinion formers and educators worldwide.
Pros: It will spread AIDS awareness worldwide.
Cons: Acting worldwide will require a large amount of capital.
• LIG had a joint venture with Okamoto industries and will launch the Durex Avanti, which is made from duron, an element twice as strong as latex.
Pros: Okamoto Industries will help LIG to penetrate the Japanese Market. The Durex Avanti is thinner than any other condom and is durable and safe.
Cons: Decreased share due to joint venture.
C. Recommendations
1. Prevention is better than cure.
Brazil did a great job in decreasing the number of people infected with AIDS. But they could always improve their methods to be efficient and cost effective, such as giving seminars in different locations about family planning and safe sex. The Brazilians should be also encouraged to have a regular check-up if they are at risk. Early treatment will cost less than later treatment.

2. National AIDS Education The government of India should increase AIDS awareness to all the states. They should extend education, and distribute the condoms in all possible channels, not only in barber shops, to promote safe sex.
3. Cut/Remove taxes from condoms. This would be an effective solution that the government can make to contribute in AIDS prevention. Cutting taxes, or better, removing taxes on condoms will result to lower prices so that it will be available for poor Brazilians and Indians.
4. LIG opportunity in Brazil and India. LIG should promote their Durex Avanti in Brazil. Since the Brazilians don’t like to use condoms because of the unnatural feeling, the Durex Avanti will be good for them. The Durex Avanti is made out of Duron, which makes the condom thinner and doesn’t affect the sensation. The Indian government should contract LIG to supply them condoms. LIG should give a discounted price. It may decrease the profit of LIG but they will help in AIDS prevention in India. This will help to build their Corporate Social Responsibility. And as long as there is a mark-up even if prices are discounted, it will still be a fix income and a fix demand for years to come.

...CASE 45 AIDS, Condoms, and Carnival Worldwide, more than 2 million people died of AIDS in 2009, and more than 33 million are estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS. BRAZIL Half a million Brazilians are infected with the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and millions more are at high risk of contracting the incurable ailment, a federal study reported. The Health Ministry study is Brazil’s first official attempt to seek an estimate of the number of residents infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Many had doubted the government’s prior number of 94,997. The report by the National Program for Transmissible Diseases/AIDS said 27 million Brazilians are at high risk to contract AIDS, and another 36 million are considered to be at a medium risk. It said Brazil could have 7.5 million AIDS victims in the next decade. “If we are going to combat this epidemic, we have to do it now,” said Pedro Chequer, a Health Ministry official. Chequer said the Health Ministry would spend $300 million next year, distributing medicine and 250 million condoms and bringing AIDS awareness campaigns to the urban slums, where the disease is most rampant. Last month, Brazil became one of the few countries to offer a promising AIDS drug free to those who need it. The drug can cost as much as $12,000 a year per patient. AIDS cases in Brazil have risen so dramatically for married women that the state of São Paulo decided that it must attack a basic cultural practice in Latin...

Aids, Condoms and Carnival

...The AIDS virus is spreading rapidly throughout India and Brazil. Due to the differences in culture and political policies, these two countries are attacking the AIDS epidemic problem in two totally different ways. | 1. Brazil plans to spend hundreds of millions of dollars for teaching public AIDS awareness mainly to married women and Carnival goers. * Inefficient and a waste of money- Brazilian men apparently refuse to wear condoms for protection because they are expensive to buy and the men do not like to wear them. * A woman asking her mate to use a condom is considered an insult to a Brazilian male. * Even their sexual partner is sleeping around, these women are afraid of confronting their partners because they are afraid of being beaten, or losing their economic support. 2. The ministry should buy more of the female version. The female condom was highly approved by the women who tested it, so the expense for purchasing and distributing them would be more effective. * This version is three times the cost of male condoms; they would not be able to buy as many. | In comparison, India has chosen a different approach in its efforts to expand AIDS awareness in their country. 1. Instead of just targeting high-risks groups, Tamil Nadu uses its AIDS education program to reach the overall population. * This differs significantly from the Brazilian strategy that primarily targets married women and Carnival goers. 2. Tamil Nadu is attempting to use established forms...

...CASE 45 AIDS, Condoms, and Carnival Plus, Latin-style machismo leaves women with little bargaining power. Only 14 percent of Brazilian heterosexual men used condoms last year, according to AIDSCAP, an AIDS prevention program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. In other studies, many women said they would not ask their partner to use a condom, even if they knew he was sleeping with others. “Women are afraid of asking their men to have safe sex, afraid of getting beaten, afraid of losing their economic support,” says Guido Carlos Levi, a director at the health department at Emilio Ribas Hospital. “This is not Mexico, but we’re quite a machoistic society here.” The frequency with which Latin men stray from monogamous relationships has compounded the problem. In studies conducted in Cuba by the Pan American Health Organization, 49 percent of men and 14 percent of women in stable relationships admitted they had had an affair in the past year. In light of statistics showing AIDS as the number one killer of women of childbearing age in São Paulo state, public health offi cials launched a campaign promoting the female condom. The hope is that it will help women—especially poor women—protect themselves and their children. But the female condom seemed unlikely to spark a latex revolution when it hit city stores. The price is $2.50 apiece—more than three times the price of most male condoms. The Family Health Association is asking the government...

Case Study: Aids, Condoms and Carnival

...AIDS, Condoms, and Carnival 1. Comment on the Brazilian and Indian governments’ strategies for the prevention of AIDS via the marketing of condoms. I think the Brazilian government’s strategies is good, because they are allowing the prevention of contract AIDS, because they are getting closer to a big part of Brazilian people that could be in high risk of contracting or that are already infected with the incurable ailment; however, its necessary that the government makes another strategy for an attack in an effective way. That’s why I think it is necessary to make programs of sexual education to all the Brazilian population especially in the poor sector and the youth, which are the most vulnerable ones. Unlike the Brazilian strategies, the Indian government is making a good campaign according to their culture and religious believes. It would be a very good strategy to look at the open minded cities to bring them AIDS education from high schools to universities and the rest of the society and in this way start to create a responsible conscious about sexually transmitted diseases. 2. How is the AIDS problem different in the United States compared with Brazil and India? The AIDS problem in the United States compared with Brazil is smaller because the culture in this country allows that the women can freely ask their sexual partner to use protection. Brazilian women can’t do this because of the Latin-Style machismo that makes them feel afraid and overpowered by their...

...face the greatest burden because they must find ways to earn income while caring for their family. The diagnosis of AIDS/HIV is just another burden on top of their strenuous life. Of the 37 million people living with HIV/AIDS, an overwhelming 95 percent live in developing countries. Within those countries, AIDS is becoming a greater threat in rural areas than in cities. The epidemic is spreading with alarming speed into the remotest villages, cutting food production and threatening the very life of rural communities. This will then bleed into threatening the city and then the country itself. This disease has caused more death than war itself around the world. The article concentrates on Brazil and the different ways they are addressing their issues of HIV/AIDs. They are doing a good job stretching their budget to meet the need for condoms, informational meetings, plays, and movies, and supplying medicine for infected people in their country. As a country Brazil is trying very hard to address the situation of the deadly disease and trying to make sure their people know the consequence of not using protection in and out of wedlock. These informative meetings are very important to attempt to decrease the number of infected people in each country and the supply of condoms with the appropriate funds. DUREX is a great company that is globally known for their condom distribution and is trying to expand their acceptance into certain countries. DUREX needs to continue their positive...

The camera then circles behind Decker going from left to right, catching Deckers view of the city at sunset. As the camera completes its half circle to the right and comes to a complete stop at DECKER’S ¾ profile we see he is holding a piece of paper, it is folded, he unfolds the paper and begins to read, a voice over begins. It is Decker’s voice. DECKER: Mom. Dad. I feel as though I’m losing myself again. [ 1. PAN to OS Right showing the letter] I know I am. ...Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria. Wait a minute. 'Once upon a time' is how all the best children's stories begin and 'prostitute' is a word for adults. How can I start a book with this apparent contradiction? But since, at every moment of our lives, we all have one foot in a fairy tale and the other in the abyss, let's keep that beginning. Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria. Like all prostitutes, she was born both innocent and a virgin, and, as an adolescent, she dreamed of meeting the man of her life (rich, handsome, intelligent), of getting married (in a wedding dress), having two children (who would grow up to be famous) and living in a lovely house (with a sea view). Her father was a travelling salesman, her mother a seamstress, and her hometown, in the interior of Brazil, had only one cinema, one nightclub and one bank, which was why Maria was always hoping that one day, without warning, her Prince Charming would arrive, sweep her off her feet and take her away with him so that they could conquer the world together. While she was waiting for her Prince Charming to appear, all she could do was dream. She fell in love for the first time when she was eleven, en route from her house to school. On the first day of term, she discovered that she was not alone on her way to school: making the same journey was a boy who lived in her neighbourhood and who shared the same timetable. They never exchanged a single word, but gradually Maria...

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
