AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION IMPACTS MY CAREER SUCCESS

The American Psychological Association is one of the largest associations of psychologists worldwide. Their mission is to advance psychology as a science and profession and to promote health, education and human welfare.

Introduction
When I was entering the work force, I thought about working for a great company, I thought of a company where my skills would be valued and rewarded. I wanted to work for a company that would give me clear directions and set goals for me to achieve. I hope that my co workers would be supportive and would help me when needed. I hope the company would give me time off when needed, and my employer would be understanding and give me the time needed. I hope for a great benefits package. I hope for a company with good training program for job advancement.
Sounds great? Maybe in a perfect world, but in the real world, working conditions are often far less than great. Overworked and unappreciated, many workers endure psychologically conditions on the job.
Why are psychologically healthy workplaces important for employers? A recent study by Northwestern National Life found that twenty-five percent of workers cite their jobs as the number-one source of stress in their lives. Stress can contribute to employee illness and lost time at work. Stressful job conditions can lead to distraction and cause work-related injuries. It can result in increased employee turnover and reduced productivity, costing companies money and opportunity. (1)

The American Psychological Association (APA) claims to have the largest association of psychologists worldwide, with 53 professional divisions and a complex system of checks and balances that help to make the system user friendly. Their mission is to advance psychology as a science and profession and to promote health, education and human welfare. The APA offers support to psychologists and students of psychology in multiple ways. The APA's direct services include insurance programs, financial services and career resources. The APA also offers public interest programs in advocacy, aging, AIDS, children-youth and families, end of life issues and care, disabilities, lesbian-gay and bisexual issues, minorities, minority fellowship, socioeconomic status, violence prevention, women, and work. According to a national survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, two-thirds of men and women say work has a significant impact on their stress level. Job stress is estimated to cost U.S. employers $300 billion a year in absenteeism, diminished productivity, employee turnover and direct medical, legal and insurance fees. (3) I have experience job related stress many times at work. People need to take time to relax and get a good night sleep. Regular exercise helps me from having a breakdown at work. Also relaxation techniques for example massage or meditation can help take your mind off your problems. The key to stress management is finding what causes it and what you need to do to solve the problem. By dealing with job related stress, people will be able to produce more at work when they are happy with their work environment. Sometime supervisor think that a job task will get done better and quicker if you do them all yourself, but this is often not the case. People can become overloaded with tasks which could be delegated to co-worker. A good supervisor is one who delegates tasks to others. When you delegate, give clear instructions and information about what you expect, and by delegating lessening your workload. Giving co worker responsibility makes them feel trusted and part of the team. By delegating tasks at home and at work can reduce your stress at work. Not being stress at work, gives people a chance to advance at work and to be successful at their job. Stress causes your breathing patterns to change and you could find yourself breathing fast. Not breathing properly can lead to hyperventilation. People need to learn how to breathe from your abdomen by mastering the abdominal breathing technique will help you correct breathing patterns. This also helps with relaxation and a stress relief exercise at work whenever you feel stress. Take a few minutes to relax especially in middle of a demanding task. You can relax by doing a simple breathing exercise, or giving yourself a hand massage. These procedures must be learnt, but if made part of your daily life, can help with relaxation quickly and make work stress easier to manage. Here are a few psychologically healthy workplace practices that help with stress:
• Leadership development
• Opportunities for career advancement
• Evaluate employee job satisfaction
• Programs to prevent and manage workplace stress
• Recognition of performance
By putting psychologically healthy practices in place, your company helps you to deal with stress. Being stress free at work, impacts people career in positive way.

Summary
• Employee involvement is good for a healthy workplace. Employees who have some degree of control over their work flow are happier and more productive. Communication between management and employees discussing work is important that employees feel management is receptive to suggestions.
• Work and life balance helps with stress; it helps how your company deals with personal emergencies, and leave time. Many companies have an employee assistance program that can offer help employees facing a variety of personal crises, including financial and emotional difficulties.
• Training seminars and continuing education courses can provide the opportunity for employee growth and development. Employees who are given the tools to advance and succeed in their chosen field show more initiative and loyalty.
• Health and safety issues are not just helpful to employee morale, but times are a matter of legal requirement. Some companies provide memberships to local gyms or discounts on health and exercise equipment to their employees. Healthy employees miss less time at work than those who do not have an exercise plan.
• There is nothing more frustrating than putting in long hours and hard work on a project, only to have your efforts go unnoticed. Some companies ensure that their employees know their work is valued, and reward their employees for efforts. Bonuses are excellent motivating tools. When given realistic goals and consistent rewards for their efforts, employees work harder and achieve more.
If employers and employees are willing to work together and keep communication open, then a great working environment discussed above can become real. A psychologically healthy workplace is good for employees and companies.
