Assisted Suicide Persuasive Essay

There is a choice before me, two paths to the same dark destination. One path is quick and short. Just a few pills and I would be at my destination. The other path is longer, rockier, full of pain, but I could enjoy the view and even take my family along with me. I could take advantage of that journey, instead of trying to get it over and done with. I’ve known for months about my illness; this lethal, terminal brain cancer that is growing exponentially, destroying each part of my brain that it slowly takes control over. With no hope of surviving until my next birthday, I look at my options for death. I know my options, although no one has mentioned assisted suicide. I know they cannot tell me about the option or influence it in any way. However, I’ve done my research about assisted suicide and my other options as limited as they are. If anything my options are dying by pills or dying by brain cancer. Aren’t I lucky? Morbid humor aside, assisted …show more content…
I could choose a bright, sunny day to be my last or a sad, rainy one to set the tone. If I were cruel enough I could even schedule my death on a holiday. My choice, no one else’s, my life, my death, my choice. And, if I choose to live, I’m still going to die. Although it may not be my choice on when I may die, I could do so much with the six months ticking away from my life. Maybe I would spend more time with my mother , have a few days with her. Try to ignore the fact that I’ll be gone before she even had the chance. Imagine the pain she would feel if I took those months away from her, or the pain she would feel seeing my weak, cancerous, almost lifeless body in the hospital strapped to the wires barely keeping me alive. The pros and cons of assisted suicide seem equal, how am I to decide? Pro, my death would be relatively fast and painless. Con, I lose valuable weeks of my life that I’ve fought so hard to

Persuasive Essay On Assisted Suicide

...no such thing as a life not worth living.” Assisted suicide is na escape for the terminally ill but it is not justifiable. There are many issues with suicide and a lot more issues with suicide by physician. In this paper I am going to venture into a few of these issues and show you why we should not stand behind legalized assisted suicide. As a society we operate under the Social Contract which guarantees us the rights to life, liberty and property. Not only is assisted suicide not a fundamental liberty because it harms the Due Process Clause it also is forbidden under the social contract’s “life clause.” In order for a government to be just and fair it must protect the lives of its citizens and assisted suicide in all forms harms this. In the Supreme Court case Washington v. Glucksberg the majority opinion stated “The history of the law's treatment of assisted suicide in this country has been and continues to be one of the rejection of nearly all efforts to permit it. That being the case, our decisions lead us...

Persuasive Essay On Physician Assisted Suicide

...Physician assisted suicide has been a controversial topic in this country for many years. Some believe that people who are sick and dying should have the legal right to end their life with the help of a physician. There are many terminal cancer patients who are so sick they will not have a chance to live the rest of their life so they choose the route of physician assisted suicide. They choose it because it is an easy pain free way to end their life. Although people may say physician assisted suicide is unethical, physician assisted suicide is ethical because it is a person's individual choice whether they want to live or die and it reduces suffering. There have been many cases and statewide issues that have dealt with physician assisted suicide. The state of California and Washington denied the idea of physician assisted suicide. In the early 1990’s California and Washington rejected the votes that would have allowed Physician assisted suicide to be legal. Physician assisted suicide is a state issue. Physician assisted suicide was a problem in states...

Persuasive Essay

...Persuasive Essay Draft Matthew Callender G124/ENC1101 Section 13 English Composition - 2015 Spring Quarter Physician assisted suicide/euthanasia should be legal. When you hear the word suicide, most people associate it to the mentally ill, depressed or otherwise disturbed but there is a growing segment of people across the globe, who wants to die due to a wide range of disorders making life unbearable. Many argue that forcing a person to live with an incurable and painful disorder is like condemning them to a life of torture. Physician assisted suicide should be a decision a patient can make as long as they meet certain criteria and submit to mandated screening. A sane and sober person should have the right to choose. We allow people to treat themselves with snake bites, drinking horse urine and a wide range of absurd treatments. Why can’t we choose to treat a terminal disease with death? It’s perfectly legal for an 18yr old to smoke cigarettes knowing it exponentially increases their chances of severe illness and death. The restriction of choice infringes on basic human rights to live free of oppression and pain. If a person chooses suicide to alleviate suffering what right do we have to stop them? Restricting assisted suicide is not only condemning the patient to a life of pain and suffering but often the family of the patient with crippling debt and emotional stress. Imagine watching someone you loved suffer through excruciating pain day in and day out...

Euthanasia

...March 16th, 2012 Persuasive Essay Euthanasia, Mercy Killing or Murder? Euthanasia and physician assisted suicide are the methods for helping patients to release their pain and suffering by using either medication or other comfortable methods. There are many arguments about these issues had been rising up from many different aspects, such as the actual definition of euthanasia and its practice; the physicians’ responsibilities and opinions; and ethics and religions stance of euthanasia. In my opinion, euthanasia and physician assisted suicide should be prohibited completely in all hospitals. Euthanasia is a physician purposely kills a patient by drugs with the approval from that person. Euthanasia can divide into two categories: passive and active euthanasia. Passive euthanasia is withdrawing any life-sustaining treatment (Palliate Medicine - 2011). In the other hand, active euthanasia is using drugs under administration of a physician. It can be voluntary, with the permission of the patients; involuntary, without a permission of a patient; and non-voluntary, with the permission of the second party due to the physical or mental condition of a patient (Health Policy – 2010). Involuntary is performing against the patient’s will, which is completely illegal. Active voluntary and non-voluntary are the main consideration of the society nowadays. One of the studies has shown the estimation of the percentage of deaths in the United Kingdom that involved euthanasia to be 0.16% (Palliative...

...choose to read the essay called “The case against Physicians-Assisted Suicide: For the Right to End-Of Life Care because this is an essay that I am very interested in. The author gave great examples and statements about why this matter is so serious. He grabbed my attention in the beginning and all the way to the end. The one statement that really stood out was the statement he wrote about one of the Dutch physicians. He wrote that the only reason why one of the physicians decided to give one of the patient’s euthanasia because he just wanted the bed that she was in. The main point of the essay was about physicians feeling sorry for patients that were in so much pain and it was nothing they could do help them. The author persuaded to me that the matter at hand was something to look deeper into. I wanted to learn more about the topic and talk to some of the physicians I work with and ask them how they feel about the subject. He also made me think about other reasons why this is a very bad idea to end a person life because are suffering so badly. I relieved the same feedback as my previous essay that I sent before. They said I need to try to not to write in the first person. I will this feedback to make my essay more effective by not writing in first person and not make the essay passive. I never really understood what that meant if I am writing an essay on how I feel about a certain essay. I am going to have to work on making my essay for like a persuasive essay than a personal...

...Writing to Convince Argumentative and Persuasive Essays Sometimes we write to defend an opinion, to argue against somebody’s point of view, or to convince readers why and how we think a certain problem should be settled. The argument we develop should be a logical, properly thought-out presentation of ideas that makes a claim about an issue and supports that claim with evidence. Within this general frame, our argument consists of four basic components: (1) an issue, (2) a claim, (3) support, and (4) a recognition and refutation of the opposing view. A. The Issue. An argument is concerned with an issue – a case (like war, smoking, cloning, etc.) on which people hold opposite or different opinions. To build a convincing argument about an issue, it is essential that we be aware of the audience we are addressing: • Agreeing audience: When you write to people who already agree with your claim, the focus is usually to urge them to take a specific action and build emotional ties with them. • Neutral audience: In writing to a neutral audience, try to emphasize the importance of the issue and offer explanations that clear up your readers’ questions or misunderstandings about, or lack of interest in it. • Disagreeing audience: The most challenging audience combines people whose viewpoints contrast with yours; they may be hostile to your claim and have strong feelings about the issue. In writing to a disagreeing audience, your goal is to convince readers to consider...

Euthanasia

...Persuasive Essay 10 - 12: Euthanasia: Should humans be given the right to play God? Should humans be allowed to play the role of God? Legalising euthanasia would do just that. Euthanasia is where individuals who are terminally ill elect to end their own life. This has and will continue to be a contentious issue with the right people’s religious beliefs conflicting with those of the rights individual. The power to play with people's lives should not be handed out under a legal and/or medical disguise. Thus euthanasia should not be legalised. The term 'Euthanasia' comes from the Greek word for 'easy death'. It is the one of the most public policy issues being debated about today. Also called 'mercy killing', euthanasia is the act of purposely making or helping someone die, instead of allowing nature to take its course. Basically for advocates of the practice of euthanasia it means killing in the name of compassion. However this view is contradictory to religious beliefs, who are these medical people to meddle in the God’s plans. Euthanasia promotes abuse and gives doctors the right to murder all in the name of ‘compassion’. All proponents in the euthanasia debate will agree that no matter the safe guards put in place around this practice; this process is susceptible to abuse. As Dr. J Forest Witten warned that euthanasia would give a small group of doctors "the power of life and death over individuals who have committed no crime except that of becoming ill or being born, and might...

...Knowledge Area Module VI Contemporary Issues and the Ethical Delivery of Health Services Student: Harold Taitt, harold.taitt@waldenu.edu Student ID # A00293212 Program: Ph.D. Health Services Specialization: Health Management and Policy Faculty Mentor: Dr. Robert Hoye, robert.hoye@waldenu.edu Faculty Assessor: Dr. Jim Goes, jim.goes@waldenu.edu Walden University May 10, 2013 Abstract Breadth Component In this age of rapidly evolving technological advances, many of the legal and ethical issues that are challenging the delivery of health care and the health care profession are new. As we confront the legal, moral, and ethical aspects of health care, we are seldom faced with decisions that require or are resolved by simple right or wrong answers (Edge & Kreiger, 1998). In the Breadth component of KAM VI, I focus on several ethical theories and how those theories influence the way ethical issues and concerns are addressed and managed in the allocation and delivery of health care services. I critically assess and evaluate those theories, concepts, and derivative principles as they impact important decisions and the implications of those decisions within the context of social change and with special emphasis on health care management and policy. In addition, I discuss the key assumptions on which the selected theories are constructed, compare and contrast the writers’ interpretations across theories, and conclude by providing a critical commentary on the merits of the selected...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...
