Batman Returns In my essay I will be talking about the representation of women and the female body for the film Batman Returns. I will be analyzing the films lead female character, Selina Kyle/Catwoman played by Michelle Pfeiffer, by giving specific examples from the film that categorizes her in this topic. The three main concepts that I will be focusing on in my essay are as followed: the good girl/bad girl dichotomy, beauty and the fragmentation of the female body, and saving and punishing women. “I am afraid we haven’t properly housebroken Miss Kyle.” At the Start of the movie, right away you get a sense of how women, in this case Selina, are treated in this movie. She is a prime example when it comes to the good girl/bad girl dichotomy concept. At the beginning, Selina is showcased as a very shy, timid woman who works long hours for her needy boss. Then when we get a glimpse in her apartment, you realize that Selina hasn’t grown up at all. Her whole apartment is painted pink along with a number of cats, stuffed toys, and doll houses. All of which is unusual for a grown woman like her to have in her apartment. However, when Selina transforms into Catwoman, she poetically destroys everything that she was on the inside and out with the help of black spray paint and a skin tight black leather cat suit. Becoming this new sexual, seductive, powerful woman who seeks to punish and hurt any man that comes in her way. There is a big change of character when Selina becomes Catwoman. She is not the shy, timid girl we once saw on screen; she becomes this power house of sexuality and seductiveness. This leads me to my next point, representation of the female body. At the start of the movie, Selina is very unattractive. She wears pale colored frumpy clothes, big glasses, and wears no makeup. However, when she becomes Catwoman, we see this new woman emerging from the shadows. Tim Burton knew what he was doing when thinking of an innovative way to reimage Catwoman’s costume. He incorporated the erotic display of the female body by using a dominatrix theme of a black skin tight leather costume that included a whip. That alone speaks volumes to the amount of sexual imagery Burton was trying to convey with his audiences. However, Catwoman’s costume is not the only thing that showcases the representation of the female body. There is a specific scene in the movie, where Catwoman is having a conversation with Batman’s other nemesis The Penguin. As The Penguin walks into his room, he finds Catwoman lying on his bed in what I like to call the “Playboy pose,” and uses very sexual dialogue when speaking to him.
My final concept that I perceived from this film is the saving and punishing women. Although Batman Returns incorporates more killing than saving. In the film, Selina dies or should have died on more than more than one occasion. Yet, somehow she miraculously survives in events that should have killed her. She states that she is just like a cat and has 9 lives. These chains of killing events are set in motion by Selina’s boss, Max Schreck. Schreck pushes Selina out of the highest floor of Schreck’s office and somehow just when we think she is dead, numerous stray cats come and save her. Followed by Schreck’s attempt, both Batman and The Penguin fail at trying to kill her as well. However, in the end Max Schreck is the one who takes Catwoman down, by shooting her 5 times with a pistol. (608)

Batman The Dark Knight Returns

...In the novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, it begins with the mutants taking control over the Gothman and they claim themselves as the ruler of the world. I would change the way how the mutants dress by making them wear a green costume with a black mask. Instead of them using guns as weapons I would make them use swords. Their laughter should sound like the evil green joker to manifest their evil plan. One scene I would like to put in the movie is when Batman drives the Batmobile to destroy the mutants by adding fireworks behind the background to expose his power. Instead of Batman almost beaten to death by the mutants and save by Robin. I would change that he is able save himself by pepper spraying the mutant eyes and defeated him by...

Batman Research Paper

...Who is your favorite superhero? The list of answers can be endless. However, in terms of who is the greatest, the answer is simple, Batman. Batman is one of the most if not the most popular superhero in the world. Batman is known from movies, comics, video games, and even cartoons. But what makes Batman the greatest superhero is not his fame, it's his attribute and skills. One reason why Batman is the greatest superhero is his alter ego. His real name is Bruce Wayne, a millionaire playboy and CEO of Wayne Enterprises. He is a rich man with no need to worry about money or income because of his vast wealth. Also according to DC Comics, he is an exceptional martial artist. This alter ego is certainly better than working as a reporter for a...

Batman V Superman: Dawn of a Disaster

...Rant: Batman V Superman Well, I may be a week late to the party, but that won't stop me from writing about this terrible movie. That's right, I said it. This movie is trash and there is no debate. Of course, you can enjoy this movie and like it, that's your opinion, but you can't say that this movie was 'good' in any way. Why have I decided to write about this movie? Well, I was on Instagram the other day and there were way too many comments on various posts actually DEFENDING this piece of shit. I got into a number of arguments with random people because they were just trashing on other people and the critics for disliking the movie. I cannot believe how hard headed some blind fanboys are. To the point where I knew I clearly won the argument because their next replies were always something like: "You're just a dumb fag who hates on movies go kill yourself". I'm not exaggerating. These people need to be stopped. They need to open their eyes and see that this movie was not good AT ALL. Some more examples of comments I found on Instagram were like "This movie is perfection" or "Everyone who hates this movie is stupid and wouldn't understand the dark theme because they only like light-hearted Marvel movies". What exactly was wrong with this movie? Everything. I mean the fight scenes were pretty cool, but that's about it. It was just an overall mess. The story jumped around everywhere and couldn't focus on anything. Let's start with the first thing wrong, the title. It shouldn't...

Batman Editorial

...Batman’s unorthodox, vigilante ways have flooded the streets of Gotham. Thus, there has been ongoing debates on whether or not he is right or wrong. Batman has recently been discussed as an “aberrant psychotic force” (Miller 1.41.7), as well as a ruthless vigilante, that could be tampering with the foundations of our democracy. It has also been said that a whole new generation, might be at risk of being tainted and influenced negatively based on Batman’s actions of crime fighting. Consequently, Batman’s vigilante ways need to be hindered, to prevent a negative influential impact on Gotham’s society. Any mentally stable individual can conclude a respectable perspective of the Batman. The motives and methods that he uses can easily be identified as deranged. An “aberrant psychotic force” (Miller 1.41.7) might simply be the most straightforward way to describe the vigilante menace. People then approach the question “What instances would consider him unstable?” There are many circumstances that show the Batman’s indecent behavior, but let’s take a prime example of his enjoyment for inducing fear onto others. The vigilante has been seen not long ago on Gotham Towers’ roof top demonstrating his “negotiating” tactics. Alongside the Batman was a member of the mutant gang, tied up to the edge of the building. Where suddenly the gang member was pushed off, leaving him swaying from the highest point in the city (MIller68). These tactics used, cannot be seen as normal, because it is...

Season 3 Summary

...Gotham returns for its Spring Premiere, and a major focus in season three is presumed to be the Edward Nygma’s descent into Batman’s rogue gallery as the Riddler. In addition to Gotham’s return, we will be seeing several character’s develop their succession onto their iconic roles. Riddler will be showing that Barbara does not have Tabatha’s best interest in heart, she’s still livid about having her hand decapitated by Nygma. He will be making alliances, new friends, such as Barbara Kean. DC Entertainment teases us with a glimpse into what to expect in Season 3. What I love about this series is the complexes created in between the villains. Often, in traditional version of Batman, we would see the caped crusader take on his villains one on...

...asdawdawdaBatman in popular culture Since his introduction, Batman has become one of the most famous comic book characters, and is known even to people who do not read the comics. In addition to DC's comic books, he has appeared in movies, television shows, and novels. Batman is known as being an unusually (though not uniquely) grim superhero, particularly for a Golden Age character. He is driven by vengeance, and wears a frightening costume to scare criminals. The contrast to characters like Superman is stark. The grimness is not a constant; in some incarnations of the character (notably the television series of the 1960s, and many of the comic books from the 1950s and 60s), it evaporates into camp and even comedy. In fact, during the 1950s (when the popularity of superhero comics had declined considerably), Batman and Robin engaged in a number of science fiction adventures that resembled the comic book stories of Superman of the time. They had a number of time travel adventures, traveling into outer space regularly; and Batman even acquired a crime-fighting mascot (Ace, The Bat-Hound) and an annoying extra-dimensional imp named Bat-Mite, who had powers similar to Superman's own Mr. Mxyzptlk. In 1953, the book Seduction of the Innocent by psychologist Frederic Wertham used Batman and Robin, among several examples, to attack the comic book medium. He insinuated that Batman and Robin had a pedophilic relationship, and asserted that the bare legs in Robin's costume encouraged homosexuality...

Civil Disobedience in Gotham City

...Batman’s Civil Disobedience in Gotham city Hugo A. Sanchez English 102 10/24/14 Abstract In this paper, I argue that the film and comic Batman the Dark Knight Returns, can be compared to Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience in the way that Batman disobeys the law by returning back to Gotham city and fighting crime. I also show that Batman displays civil disobedience when he does his best to protect Gotham city and fight the government, promising to never give up. I show that, much like Thoreau, Batman is solitary and engages in his own war by himself against the police department, criminals, and army. Just as Thoreau willingly goes to jail for his beliefs about the Mexican War, Batman fights for what he believes to be right, not only for him, but for the people of Gotham city. Batman’s Civil Disobedience in Gotham City When corruption arises, there is always a person who questions the injustice. Acts of civil disobedience are shown in modern society today, whether in society or through the media. Many individuals who are portrayed as heroes are people who break the law and fight for the power and authority that the citizens have lost due to their rights being taken away. A person must be able to accept the outcomes and consequences of their own actions when they disobey. Being civilly disobedient is not only about breaking a law. The actions of these individuals spread ideas. In the end, the outcome of the struggle may involve a change in a law like the way Cesar...

Watchmen Archetype

...He has written characters like Superman on how one struggles to understand what society wants that offer comparison to the Comedian, and how he encourages society to understand that wants are not as important as their needs. Batman and Ozymandias both show the distinction of how superhumans attempt to achieve their goals, and even acknowledging the effects, no matter good or bad, that they have on others. Rorschach and Wonder are both characters that’s setbacks allows them to force anger on wrongdoings, and how their moral codes are reflected on the character that they are. Finally, the epilogue scene written by Mark W. is a nod that even those who are powerful share human characteristics, emotionally, philosophically, and psychologically. Even characters outside of the DC universe such as Vibiana from Boxers written by Gene Luen Yang have developed the same deconstructive belief on what makes a hero tragic. In comparison to Watchmen and Kingdom Come, both novels contain...

Gender Roles in Gotham

...Throughout media texts, most men share certain common characteristics. They are strong, stoic, protective, rational and independent, to name a few. Characters such as James Bond, Tony Soprano and most superheroes greatly exemplify many of these qualities. Reoccurring representations of men with these same attributes contribute to what is called hegemonic masculinity, or “normative male behavior” (Iftkhar, November 6, 2014). This stereotype causes the audience to associate certain qualities with men. Gotham, a new television series that creatively divulges the backstories of Batman and his most famous rivals, appeals to a male audience and represents masculinity in the classic ways. Through both character illustration and dialogue, Gotham portrays most of its male characters as strong, aggressive, and independent protectors, reinforcing the conception of hegemonic masculinity. At the same time, the show also presents characters who challenge or pervert those norms exploring invalidity of the stereotype. The city of Gotham is in bad shape. Crime lords rule and have made deals with the Gotham County Police Department to keep it that way. For example, some doctors work on the black market to treat criminals and police officers agree not to arrest them in exchange for information about the patients they see. In addition to structured crime, strange murders frequently occur in the city. James Gordon, newly appointed police homicide detective and son of former district attorney...

Joker

...arch-nemesis of DC Comics’ superhero Batman. The Joker is noted for his clownlike appearance and sick humour. The Joker, initially portrayed as a small-time crook, was disfigured and driven insane by an accident with toxic chemicals. He was depicted with chalk-white skin, ruby-red lips permanently fixed in a demonic grin, and bright green hair. He was created in 1940 by illustrator Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger; their collaborator Jerry Robinson also claimed credit for the character’s inspiration. Early stories portrayed him (post-accident) as a homicidal psychopath, but by the mid-1950s he had been softened into a thief whose crimes were also gags. In the 1960s the character devolved into outright camp in a farcical Batman television series. In the 1970s, writer Denny O’Neil and artist Neal Adams revitalized the Joker’s image, making him once again a wickedly menacing killer. Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 story The Killing Joke revised and complicated his origin, ultimately suggesting that he might be not only lying about his past but unsure of it himself. Stories from this era focused on the Joker’s insanity and explored his relationship with Batman, suggesting that the two were equally insane but channeled their energies in opposite directions. The Joker has appeared in many media incarnations of Batman. Among the notable actors to portray him were Cesar Romero in the 1960s television series, Jack Nicholson in the film Batman (1989), and Heath Ledger in The Dark...
