Cannabalistic Cows

...food comes from, Michael Pollen researches these questions in his book, The Omnivores Dilemma. Through his research, he notes that the 100 million head of cattle breed for food are living on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (C.A.F.O.) are fed slaughtered cow parts. As a nation, we need to educate consumers on the dangers of consuming corn fed beef, begin pushing for agri-business policy change from the top down, and partake in the benefits of eating healthier meat; if these changes are not implemented soon healthcare rates will soar, along with e Coli and outbreaks of other diseases associated with processing infected beef. The main problems with eating corn fed beef are the dangerous health risks and hidden costs that are passed down to the public. Associated with these problems are the government policies that prevent change. Continuing to ignore these problems will result in increased obesity, heart disease, and other ailments; as well as economic troubles for those in agriculture, business, and consumers. However, if we properly educate people on nutrition, change the way the agriculture and ranching industry treat cattle, and buy grass fed beef, the problems created from corn fed beef can be avoided and resolved. First, we will look at the dangerous health risks when eating corn fed beef. “Calories are calories…protein is protein,” as stated by Michael Pollen in his book, The Omnivores Dilemma, when discussing the industrial...

Let's Eat

...Let’s Eat Jessica Haller DeVry University Let’s consider where hamburger comes from. Reading Pollen’s, The Omnivore Dilemma, it sparked an interest in me to not only follow the path of where the corn is grown and what it is used to create, but also what does corn feed that provides dinner on the table for us. One big contention in today’s day and age is how is the corn grown and used to feed the animals which sustain us. You see in the super markets all the time now, organic carrots, corn, potatoes, lettuce, grain fed hamburger. What does all of this mean? Taking a step back and looking where it originated, we see cattle herding. Herding cattle is as old as Time itself. As old as when the first cattle where domesticated over 50,000 years ago, and as old as the cattle drives done in the Old West. Now imagine living back in the days of the “Wild West”. Being part of a cattle drive and moving the cattle from the East coast and “Going West.” The cook or the “Boss man” of the cattle drive was the “man who owned the cattle they were herding -- but everyone also knew the cook was the man even the boss deferred to most often. The outfit's chuck wagon was a rough equivalent of a traveling general store, and the cook was not only the chief clerk of that store, he was usually the closest thing the cowboys had to a doctor, surgeon, dentist, tailor, and fussy maiden aunt.”(Old West, 2012) You being the “Boss man” have to feed the entire crew and making sure that you have enough...

...animals only in a few countries. Finally, there is the biggest difference between cows and whales. It is that whales are free in the huge ocean until caught by people, and cows will be grown up in the field by the people to eat. The first difference between cows and whales is that cows are the most popular edible meat all over the world. Therefore, many cows are butchered everyday. Of course, there are several reasons that people use cows to their provisions. Because cows are easy for farmers to breed, and they are not as clever as other animals. On the other hand, whales have been protected by a law. (The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) Therefore, every whaler has been limited in number to catch the whales recently. The reason of this law is whales are not easy to breed as cows. And they are such a clever animals more than any other kind of animal. The second difference is that cows are important provisions all over the world. Almost of all countries use beef as their main dish. Therefore, it is nothing wound and give any impression us to slaughter cows. But whales have been used as edible meat in a few countries like small islander countries. Therefore, for the people who are living in big countries, to slaughter the whales look like violence activity and wounded hunting. The...

Heifer Observation Paper

...I have very few monumental things to report for me project this month. My breeder and I have been focusing more on my calf’s nutrition and conformation more than anything else as we approach the Iowa beef expo. My heifer is still boarded at Summit Farm’s show barn in Hubbard, Iowa. She shares an outdoor space with three other angus show heifer. These heifers are preparing for the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. These heifers eat together and receive a diet of cottonseed hulls, beet pulp, and a 12% protein co-mix feed of cracked corn and pellets. The cottonseed and beet pulp help increase the capacity of the heifers, while the mixed feed provides the protein and energy a growing heifer needs. I get to work with all four heifers at the show barn. I wash them, groom hair, and lead them. My breeder likes to ask me question constantly about the differences of the four heifers. For example, he will ask me to explain trait I like about one heifer or dislike about another. This is great practice for livestock judging and teaches me a lot about the structure of my heifer....

The Lazy Cow Stratford Upon Avon: Review

...The Lazy Cow Stratford upon Avon: review The Lazy Cow in Stratford upon Avon is one of a chain of steak and ale houses in the area. Despite several unfavourable reviews I decided to take a look for myself. The Lazy Cow was born out of controversy at the abrupt closure of Cox’s Yard as a live music venue in 2012. The local people of Stratford were angered by the sudden loss of regular live acts. As a result the lazy cow committed to retain some form of live music although it lacks the quality and variety that Cox’s Yard originally offered. The Lazy Cow is set in a complex of buildings all offering a variety of food and drink, all that is except for the attic theatre which is housed above The Milking Parlour. The Milking Parlour sells homemade ice creams, milkshakes, teas and coffees. In addition, is an offshoot from The Lazy Cow called The Cow Shed where they provide homemade burgers and chips for those wishing to eat on the hoof. This complex suggests a fun and relaxed hive of activity perfect for tourists and locals alike. Upon entering the restaurant it is obvious that this is an American style steak bar as the restaurant is dripping in timber with a rustic design, an American style bar in the middle and the steaks and burgers are topped off with American flags. You walk down stairs and are met by smart, smiling staff who offer to escort you to your preference of either tables or booths. Booths offer comfortable high seating benches at large wooden tables; an ideal place...

Lamb meat demand is constantly increasing every year. Estimated demand for lamb meat by households will increase by 473 tones in 2010 from 11.091 tones in 2008. In Malaysia, the demand for lamb is not high. This is due to two factors. First, consumers do not know where to buy lamb meat, because not many markets that sell and distribute lamb meat. The second factor is the misperception that lamb meat contains saturated fat and cholesterol that is not very good for the heart. Lately, the consumer awareness of the benefits of lamb meat is increase. These make the demand of lamb meat increase in local market. Giant hypermarket take the initiative to ensure the supply of lamb are always there to meet the needs of consumers. However, adequate supply in the market is not sufficient if the supply does not meet the standard and quality set. Corn Fed vs. Grass Fed

...Corn Fed vs. Grass Fed Have you noticed how there’s an increasingly wider selection of types of beef to be purchased? Which option is healthier? Which one is least expensive? There has been an ongoing dispute over which choice of beef we should be consuming. While both may seem to have their own advantage and disadvantage; ranging from being cost-efficient, to more beneficial nutrients. Both contribute to the eco-system, but in completely different ways. While grass-fed beef is the healthier alternative, it can prove to be a bit pricey, nonetheless, grass-fed beef provide us with more nutrients; they’re higher in Omega-3 fatty acid and vitamin E. Corn-fed beef, on the other hand, is relatively more affordable. The million dollar question should be, it’s affordable, but at what cost? What makes corn-fed beef so much cheaper than grass-fed? Corn-fed cattle go through a process, almost like an assembly line. The first step, the cow and calf live in a cow-calf operation. Here, the cow is artificially inseminated for the sole purpose of reproduction. For the first 6 months, the calf stays with their mother, once they’re old enough they’re taken to a pen, where they’re introduced to corn. To make a long story short, the calf is finally moved into a CAFO (confined animal feeding operation). From this point on, they’re all confined to small caged in areas. These facilities house hundreds, even thousands of farm animals. From this point on their diet is strictly corn, protein, vitamins...
