‘He had a big mouth sometimes, but … how was that a crime? In the United States we have a Bill of Rights guaranteeing us freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Don’t we?’
This is what the American novelist Joyce Carol Oates writes the very end of her novel taking her point of departure in Matt Donaghy who goes to Rocky River High School. The above quote from the novel includes a discourse on the issues of being a big mouth and most importantly the freedom of speech which according to the protagonist Matt Donaghy does not exist?
In the story we are inside Matt’s head and therefore we follow and see all of his thoughts on the situation going on and his way of behaving towards the people questioning him in the office about what he actually said. Bear in mind that even though he firmly denies the accusations, he is almost continuously being mistrusted. This is probably caused by his very sarcastic behavior because he keeps saying inappropriate things even when he’s interrogated in the office: ‘I can tell you: I never threatened anybody or anything…And if I had, I wouldn’t tell you, about it, would I?’
Matt is maybe not aware of the possibility that he did actually say something to his friends that could be misinterpreted and have a deleterious effect. He starts realizing that the sarcastic jokes won’t help him out and can only hurt him even more – only by choosing the right arguments with care can he avoid the mistrust laid upon him. His speech is therefore restricted which is perhaps intentionally done by the author because it somehow can reflect that freedom of speech is not all that free after all. Also, all of his actions in the office maybe contribute to the distortion of the situation which, in the end, limits his freedom of speech.
However, this only seems to be in effect when he’s among the Head of School and the police which might represent the

Big Mouth and Ugly Girl

...Big Mouth and Ugly Girl The novel “Big Mouth and Ugly Girl” written by Joyce Carol Oates in 2002 is a story about two American high school students who get very involved in each other’s lives by an accidental incident. Ursula Riggs is a 16 year-old high school student at a school called Rocky River High in the US. She is not like any other teenage-girl, but is actually quite a tomboy. She is not very popular at her school, probably because she is a girl with a whole lot of attitude. Ursula is a very sporty girl and has always been the best player at her basketball team. When she is on the field, she is a warrior woman. She does not care about anything but her own success on the team and she will practice any method to win a game. When she is in this particular state of mind, she refers to herself as Ugly Girl. When she puts on this Ugly Girl-mask, it is because she is aware of her own sensitivity and tries to stay strong by putting the worst label on herself. If she is already aware of the fact that she is ugly and an outcast, how can anyone else hurt her by saying these things? Ursula Riggs began to develop a womanly body far too early and that probably caused her to quit her swimming team. She was not comfortable with her new body and started to put herself up against the rest of the girls on the team, while they still looked like girls their age were supposed to look like. This feeling of being an outsider is a character trait that later on is essential...

The toy is in a shape of a crocodile with a big head, and a wide opened mouth with only one row of teeth on the bottom jaw, which doubles as buttons. The concept of this game is simple. Modern day toys are mostly made out of plastic to shift the focus to availability rather then longevity of the toy. Wooden toys are elegant and durable, which give it a long life span, but many of those wooden toys are specific to the region of its creator. ...The word cleft means a gap or split between two things. A cleft lip is a split in the upper lip. This can happen on one or two sides of the lip, creating a wider opening into the nose. A cleft palate is a split in the roof of the mouth. This leaves a hole between the nose and the mouth. Sometimes a cleft lip and cleft palate occur together. Cleft lip and cleft palate are very common and occur in about 1 or 2 of every 1,000 babies born in the United States each year. Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects. This means they happen while a baby is developing. Normally, the mouth and nose of a baby develop between the first 6 and 12 weeks of growth inside the mother. In some babies, parts of the lips and roof of the mouth don't grow together. Because the lips and the palate develop separately, it's possible to have cleft lip alone, cleft palate alone, or both together. The use of ultrasound before birth of the offspring can detect the presence of cleft in an infant, but a physical examination of the lip, mouth, and nose can only confirm the true presence of the disorder. One good thing about diagnosis testing is that it has been known to rule out any other forms of abnormalities. What Happens to a Kid With Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate? A baby with cleft lip and cleft palate may have other difficulties that include feeding problems, middle ear fluid and hearing loss, dental problems, and speech problems. Several factors may increase the likelihood of a baby developing a...

Mouth Fat Lab Report

...Next, the mouth is a collection of the teeth, gums, hard palate, soft palate, tongue, tonsil, ulva, lips, et cetera. The mouth is a premier environment for bacteria to live because it has a warm climate. Also, when the hosts eats, they receive an appropriate amount of nutrients to survive. Following, to determine how many bacteria are in the mouth, researchers have measured the weight of all the bacteria on the teeth. The weight of the mentioned bacteria is 10 mg. But since the teeth are only 1/20 of all oral surfaces, the 10 mg  is multiplied by 20 to find the total weight, which is 200 mg. Another fact is that 1 mg of oral biomass inhabits 100 million bacteria. So, then, the two values, 100 million and 200mg would need to be multiplied to...

Inspection Report - Sample

...The following report provides a brief description of the first five (5) wild things encountered during the exploration of the island currently identified as WTWTA. The five wild things have been labeled as • Long-Nosed Sea Monitor (Foundem inwaterus) • Horned Lion (Leo decapitatum) • Razor-Toothed Sheep (Ovinus noshaggum) • Bearded Behemoth (Needus clippingem) • Ginger-tressed Hairy Duck (Canardus hirsutus) The current labels are used for cataloguing purposes in order to make note-taking easier. Long-Nosed Sea Monitor (Foundem inwaterus) This ocean-dwelling creature seems to keep at least a third of its body above the waterline. Two horns protrude from a head that is covered in blonde hair. The mouth, lined with nine incisors along the upper jaw, resembles that of an alligator, giving this wild thing the appearance of having a long nose. There are six spines along the back of the neck and three claws on each of the visible front feet. The top of a wing-like structure covers the top of the front feet. Attempts to observe the rest of the body have so far been unsuccessful. Horned Lion (Leo decapitatum) This quadruped seems to lead the wild things and is almost double the size of the smallest wild thing: the razor-toothed sheep. A total of sixteen claws are evenly spread across this creature’s four feet. The body and head resemble that of its namesake, the lion. The difference, however, lies in the three horns that adorn the head. Two are located...

Preprosthetic and Implant Surgery

...Preprosthetic and Implant Surgery espite dentistry's improved ability to maintain dentition, many individual continue to require replacement of some or all of their teeth. Surgical improvement of the denture-bearing area and surrounding tissue (preprosthetic surgery) offers an exciting and demanding challenge to the dental practice. Many minor modifications of the alveolar ridge and vestibular areas can greatly improve denture stability and retention. In some cases, patients have severe bone changes or soft tissue abnormalities that require extensive surgical preparation before the prosthetic appliance can be properly constructed and worn. Procedures that improve prosthesis retention and stability are discussed and illustrated in Chapter 13. One of the most exciting frontiers in dentistry is implantology. Proper bony and soft tissue reconstruction followed by placement of implants and subsequent prosthetic reconstruction can provide patients with a more natural and efficient substitution for their lost dentition. Depending on the circumstances, several types of implant systems may be used. Essay About Yay

...The first thing I saw was Scott’s sharp, angular teeth sink into Liam’s flesh. Liam wasn’t even gripping the railing any longer. Instead, he was hanging only by Scott’s jaw fixed into his side. The shrill shrieks that emerged from Liam’s mouth were enough for any creature to cower and cringe in sympathetic pain. However, I did not cringe, nor did I sympathise. My eyebrows furrowed together like they were two trains travelling in opposite directions on the same track. My mouth fell ajar and I took a large breath. My eyes were motionless, fixed on Scott and the daggers that grew beneath his lips. Those teeth that sliced Liam’s flesh would change him forever. He was either going to die or become something that everyone wanted to kill. Scott bit into him like it was nothing, like it was a piece of steak on his dinner plate. I don’t even know why I was surprised. Scott never saw his actions as harmful. He always said his sole mission was to “protect his friends” but when did that ever work? He did it for himself. He always did it for himself. When he first got bitten, all he thought about was his own self. About how he couldn’t be normal or how he’d lose Allison. But he never thought about how exactly Allison would feel. He didn’t think about how if she would be upset or hurt or even scared. He only thought about how he would feel. How he would be upset or hurt or even scared. It was selfish and I was the only one who saw it. He didn’t bite Liam to save him. He bit him for himself...
