A vast forest contains millions of trees, and on each tree are hundreds of leaves. A tiny single spark ignites and grows from a feeble spark, to a flickering flame to a mighty blaze. A magnificent towering inferno inhabits the entire forest, which minutes ago seemed impossible to change. A single minuscule spark can kindle an entire forest fire. Honourable judges, teachers and fellow students, my name is Talha Shaikh, and today I’m going to talk to you about how a single person, just like the spark, is capable of influencing the entire world. I am going to discuss how someone can make a difference, people who have influenced our world for the better, and evidence that proves it’s possible.

Firstly, how can someone influence the whole world? The change has to start with you, then your community and then eventually the entire Earth. Paul McCartney said “Think Globally. Act Locally.” This phrase urges people to consider the wellbeing of the entire planet and to take action in their own communities and cities. Think globally reminds us to think about the bigger picture, and act locally tells us to do something in our own neigbourhood to create positive change.

There are many ways that we can adapt to have a positive influence in the world. We can work towards being more eco-friendly and overcoming global warming by planting trees, recycling, conserving water and electricity. As well, we can raise awareness of social issues such as child labour, poverty etc. Raising funds and awareness for people suffering from various diseases, is also a great way to start making a difference. Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” To make a positive change you have to be informed about what is occurring around our planet.

Many great people in the past have contributed in shaping the world. My role model, Mahatma Gandhi is one of these people. Gandhi advocated for the rights of Indians and was a leader of the independence movement, organizing boycotts against British institutions in peaceful forms of civil disobedience. Another historic figure who changed the world is Martin Luther King who brought us to the high degree of multiculturalism that we have today. Mother Teresa is another example of a person who who had a massive positive influence through her kind actions, and wise advice. These people and many more have one main thing in common which is their love for the people, and their perseverance to make our Earth a better place for the people to live in.

It is extremely unrealistic and pessimistic to not believe that a single person can change the world. Due to all the evidence provided, one can safely say that it is possible. Many historic figures that I have mentioned contributed in this change through their actions. We can aspire to be like them and bring positive change. Our intentions should not be that we want to change the whole world, we have to start small and build our way up. Every little action makes a difference. Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

In conclusion, we are able to see that indeed, a single person can make a change. We can do many things in our own home to start making the world a better place. Many great figures in history have made a difference, and they will be remembered forever for their contributions. To conclude I would like to quote John Lennon from his inspirational song Imagine, "Now you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope some day you will join us, and the world will live as one". Thank you for listening to my speech and I hope that you take some time to ponder about how you can change the world.

Greed Intro Essay

...The use of greed in short stories "Greed will always leave you dissatisfied because you'll never be able to get everything you desire. Greed never allows you to think you have enough; it always destroys you by making you strive ever harder for more." (Rabbi Benjamin Blech). This statement points to the idea that one's greed will never be satisfied because it will always keep wanting more. Greed is only achieved through an individual's selfish desires which creates conflicts in personal relationships and society. The short stories The Rocking Horse Winner, D.H. Lawrence, The Lottery Ticket, Anton Chekhov and Twins, Eric Wright illustrate this truth. These three short stories clearly portray that greed destroys relationships, fosters materialism within society, and causes betrayals. Greed can destroy relationships to a point where two people detest each other. In The Rocking Horse Winner, the relationship between a mother and her son is shattered because the mother continuously wants more money. Money makes her feel as if she is elite in comparison to others. Her need for money completely destroys the son as he feels like it is his duty to help raise money for his mother. Even with his help, she was never grateful for the $5000 that was gifted from the son. She complains that it was not enough and still wants more money. Her greed places too much stress on her son, and he passes away due to all the anxiety and pressure he feels from his mother's greed of money. "His eyes...

...Digi-Sprint is the only treadmill that has a retractable integrated touch screen computer with Wi-Fi, voice reader and webcam. The screen is retractable to fit the different consumer’s different needs as some would prefer to have the screen at a distance while others prefer it to be at a close range. For consumers who do not like reading while running the voice reader would read out the required areas of the website. Another main feature of Digi-Sprint is that it is silent. It does not emit noise like other treadmills. (Refer to table 1 in the appendix for all the features of Digi-Sprint both tangible and intangible characteristics). 1.3 Brand Image and Brand Identity: “Brand identity is a combination of name, logo, and design.” (Blech, Blech, Kerr & Powell, 2009). Digi is short for digital which implies to the consumers that the treadmill is digitalised and sprint is supposed to represent the athletic factor of the treadmill. The brand image that the company wants consumers to associate with the Digi-Sprint is that it is a sophisticated, intelligent high-end brand treadmill that is revolutionary and entertaining. The sophisticated image is to be achieved through the sleek and complex design. Intelligent is accomplished through the sharp, quick and innovative interface; yet remaining user friendly. The High Definition (HD) touch screen, the modern design combined with the gloss or chrome finish, pricing, advertising and its placement in shops will attain the high-end brand...

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Book Review

...THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS – Novel Response The book of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas starts out simply with things we can all relate to. Bruno’s almost-teenaged sister, Greta, is a ‘Hopeless Case’ moving from scary dolls to fussing over boys. He’s moving house and gets in scrapes; he misses his grandparents and best friends, which are problems we can all relate to. They’re mundane (everyday) problems, though to nine-year old Bruno, they’re rocking the centre of his world. We feel for him - as we all were nine once, less wise and less able to cope. We might have nine-year old brothers or sisters. He seems very innocent and vulnerable. He has no control over the elements in his life. In short, it seems like an everyday book. If you read the blurb though, there’s a disturbing mood even before you start reading. We’re told we’ll go on a ‘journey with a nine-year old’ but that this ‘isn’t a book for nine-year olds’ - as if it’s not suitable, or too scary. What’s horrible about this is that the boy in it is nine, which makes us afraid that his life is too scary for him. John Boyne builds up the mystery from the start. The blurb says ‘we think it’s important that you start to read without knowing what it’s about.’ Not knowing is unsettling. The first scenes of the film of the novel clearly show Nazi flags, and soldiers in a town. But in the book, there are no clues at first. Because we don’t know their true identity, we’re lulled us into a false sense of security. We think...

Like Water For Chocolate: A Narrative Fiction

... “Not in the slightest!” he yells, over the ear-splitting roar of the plane's engine. After landing, they quickly search to find a single person willing to guide them up the mountain, but to no avail. Not even the locals were willing to brave the mountain. “EL MOTEL SIETE” reads the twinkling, magenta sign jutting out of the small, 10 room hotel. This is where they would be staying their first night in Mendoza Province. “One room please”, says Jeff to the owner of the motel. LA HABITACIÓN SIETE reads the nearly scraped off label on the key. Stains cake the walls as they walk into their room that will be their home for the next 12 hours. The odor of roach killer and lysol fills their room. “Blech!” exclaims Pedro as he walks into the room. “What is that?” “The smell or the stains?” inquires Jeff. “I don’t care! Either! Both!” “The stains are blood. The smell is insect spray.” he retorts. “I don’t even want to know what has been happening in here,” says Pedro in disgust. The sound of rain violently smacking the roof drifts them off into a deep slumber until the boom of thunder abruptly wakes them from their sleeps. “Uggh! What was that?” questions Jeff as he begins to wake up, still halfway asleep “It was just thunder, idiot,” replies Pedro. “You would think I’m the stupid one.” “Hey! It is typically a short summary of the document. When you’re ready to add your content, just click here and start typing.] Kimberly Watkins Kimberly Watkins Over the last 12 weeks I have spent a lot of time pondering the questions that have been presented in this course. What is the meaning of life? How do we live a meaningful life? Is there a meaning at all? Before this course, I can honestly say that these questions never really entered my mind. I always felt that I was here for a reason, but I could never clearly define what that reason was. Perhaps I never will. I grew up in a household where religion did not exist, my parents had been catholic in their younger years but throughout time they had lost their faith. They never prevented me from engaging myself in organized religion, but I had always found myself drawn to more of a non-believing science based thought process. Growing up I believed that I was an atheist which is simply defined as “a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings” (Merriam Webster, 2014). But that definition is so rigid and unmoving, and life...

Hitch

...Hitch Plot summary Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Will Smith) is a professional "date doctor", or consultant as Hitch terms himself, who coaches other men in the art of having the perfect date with the woman of their dreams. While coaching one of his clients, Albert Brennaman (Kevin James), who is smitten with celebrity Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta), Hitch finds himself falling for Sara Melas (Eva Mendes), a gossip columnist who is determined to unmask and ruin the so-called date doctor after one of his "clients" (with whom Hitch refused to work) had a one-night stand with her best friend. However, where Albert and Allegra's relationship continues to progress, Hitch finds that none of his tried and tested methods are working on himself, despite being a master of the art. After Hitch is unmasked, he and Sara break up, and Allegra and Albert follow suit. Finally, Hitch confronts Allegra and convinces her to reunite with Albert, before reconciling with Sara. In the process, he makes the startling discovery that he doesn't really do anything significant, and that most of his customers (particularly Albert) really were successful by just being themselves. In the end, Albert and Allegra get married and celebrate their marriage with Hitch and Sara, who are also back together again. Hitch, reflecting on love's unpredictability, addresses the audience in the last line, "Basic principles... There are none." A Brief Resource Appraisal of the Thee Choirs Winery. the Ways in Which the Systems of Production Can Be Made More Sustainable from an Environmental Point of View.

...A brief resource appraisal of the Thee Choirs Winery. The ways in which the systems of production can be made more sustainable from an environmental point of view. Introduction Three Choirs is one of the largest and the best established of England’s vineyards and is a major Gloucestershire tourist’s destination. (Williamson, 2008) Three Choirs cultivates a vide range of typically English grape varieties and in addition Pinot Noir. The company was established in 1973 with only a half an acre of vines, “simply as an experiment”,- Martin Fowke comments. This has expanded dramatically over the years. And now 30.3 ha of vines are being cultivated, all on the same single estate home vineyard. Tree Choirs also established cooperation by offering contract wine making for around 30 to 30 other small growers, both local and further afield. The Three Choirs single-estate is planted on well-drained sandstone soils, most of which enjoys a southerly aspect. The meso-climate of the vineyard is significant in both its warmth and low rainfall. As a result the approach is very much one of sustainable viticulture, however there is a range of techniques and opportunities that might help to make the winery even more sustainable. These tools will be presented in three parts (Vineyard, Winery and Infrastructure, which includes shop, hotel, restaurant) and discussed below, as well as the key points of the sustainability concept. “Sustainability is a...

...Perception of College Students towards Advertisement of Selected………… Chapter 1 Introduction and Background of the Study The term 'motel' in the United States is outdated and very few motel chains still exist. Motels, very popular starting in the 1960s when travel by car was on the rise, have now been replaced by budget chain hotels typically used by road warriors. In the year 2000, the American Hotel-Motel Association removed 'motel' from its name after doing considerable market research and finding the term to be passed. This national association is now called the American Hotel and Lodging Association. The association felt that using the term 'lodging', instead of 'motel', more accurately reflects the large variety of different style hotels including luxury and boutique hotels, suites, inns, budget, and extended stay hotels. Perception is subjective in interpretation as brought about by experiences. A particular object can mean differently to varied individuals. Some think it is a positive, others think negative, or they are unaware of the stimulus. Perception is the whole system by which stimuli affect whatever is the cognition and behaviour of the individual automatically responding to the stimuli. Advertising is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, ideas, or services. It includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service...

Jazz Im Totalitarismus
