A BREAKDOWN IN COMMUNICATION

Linda Barry’s case prominently lacks proper communication, as said in the presented case, she was not able to report in time for her work schedule of four o’clock to noon. Instead she came to work at eight AM and gets scolded for it. To help in analyzing the case, we need to explore certain ideas. Listening. It is a process where in a receiver obtains a message; and since communication involves a two-way process, this process should be done by the one being addressed, and the one who sent the message. In this case, both supervisors/recruiter and Linda may have failed to listen. The recruiter/supervisor may have not listened to Linda’s possible work schedule considering that she is a single mother that has to prepare her children to school in the morning. Linda, on the other hand, might have not listened, or in this case “read”, the instructions regarding her work schedule.
Feedback would then be essential to know whether the persons who would receive the message would actually intercept the message correctly. Linda and the entity supervisors have obviously received feedback, although their individual feedbacks are wrong – Linda accepted the work but thought her schedule starts from 8AM, while the supervisors thought they will be able to employ Linda within the 4AM to 12 noon schedule.
The next concept is upward and downward communication: basing from the usual management structures, simply explained, a downward communication is a process involving a message being disseminated from top line management to the employees, while upward does the opposite – employees to top line management. In the problem, as mentioned, there was either a misunderstanding by the entity’s management of her time (which would be a problem residing in the upward communication), or by Mrs. Linda (which would then be by its downward communication).
