Friedrich is a story of friendship between Jewish and non-Jewish families during the time period of the Holocaust. It is told through the eyes of the narrator, who is not Jewish and does not experience the same struggles that the other boy has to receive. The two are strikingly different yet get along well. The Jewish boy, Friedrich is much braver than the passive narrator. The narrator often also can get Friedrich into risky situations as he often does not notice the struggles that Friedrich must go through. Adding onto him being very respectful towards others’ cultures, when the Sabbath celebration is going on he simply stands there, amazed. Everything had seemed so extravagant and when Friedrich walked out well-dressed, he had said almost nothing and simply stared out into the dark sky. The memory lingered with him as he went to sleep, as he could faintly remember the sad voices of the Schneider family singing. It shows that he appreciates the details and how much people will put into their own personal celebrations or matters. When encountering a new situation, he has been seen to get excited and cannot sit still. This can be seen at the hearing of the Schneider family when Herr Resch was attempting to remove them from the premises. His mother had been restless and terrified, but the narrator was excited. The anticipation only makes him more and more anxious to see what will happen next. Even if he felt a little guilt, the new environment stimulated him and he paid careful attention to everything that was going on or being said. Another instance that occurs frequently would certainly be when another person close to him, his parents or the Schneider family for example, are upset he tends to analyze them or at least watch and come to realize why they are feeling this way. Despite running into danger often, he becomes stimulated easily and tends to observe others as
