Executive Summary

The Food Box is a retailer of home cooked meals which addresses the needs of undergraduate UPLB students living in dormitories or apartments for low-cost meals that can be acquired anytime despite time constraints. The product is a food box, patterned from Chinese paper boxes, wherein the food and drink are contained in one vessel with specific divisions. This would enable the students to consume their meals while they are walking or in transit. Meals will be prepared only when an order is placed to ensure the quality and freshness of the product. Aside from this, the Company chooses not to add preservatives to the meals to provide a healthier option.

Competitive Advantage
The financial team projects its start-up costs to sum up to a total of 87 071.75 pesos. Majority of these funds will be used to build the first facility, pay deposits, initial inventory, and other one-time expenses. This includes payments for the food stall, the motorcycle, required business permits, fans and lights, and all the kitchen facilities necessary for the food stall to operate. On the first year of business operation, the finance team estimates an income of 125 854.00 pesos with a Return on Investment of 145%. This would mean that the business anticipates that by the end of year one, all its initial investments have been recovered.
The management team is primarily comprised of the five originators of the business venture who equally contributed to the creation of the business. Food Box is a relatively flat organization. Overhead for management will be kept to a minimum and all managers will be hands-on workers to satisfy the daily objectives of the Company and to ensure efficiency of work in order to guarantee quality products and services. There will be five managerial positions: over-all manager, operations and productions manager, public relations manager, financial manager, and marketing manager, to be assumed by the founders of the business. The business will start off with 5 employees, and will later grow to cater a larger market.

The Product “Eat and Run” is the business’ public statement that needs to be communicated to people because it shows them that the product can be easily consumed anytime and anywhere, especially when one is on a rush.
The product is a food box wherein the food and drinks are in one container with a specific division. It would look like a Chinese paper box with a cup in the middle which gives the consumers the ability to eat their meal even if they are walking or in transit. In addition, the food served in the food box is freshly cooked and is without preservatives so that the customers can eat a healthy meal that is available right away.
The product is intended to be sold to UPLB undergraduate students who have very little time or are unable to prepare their meals due to the limitations of dormitories and apartments. Aside from this, it is also reasonably priced for students with an allowance of at least two hundred pesos a day. The product can be availed 24/7 at its food stall located at Lopez St., Los Baños, Laguna, can be delivered to the dormitories and apartment of the students, and can also be up for reservations. The product is very suitable for students who are looking for high quality food at a low price.
Because of these, the product solves the problem of the students with their bad health caused by unhealthy foods. The food is not like those that are served in fast food chains, convenience stores and food kiosks which are very unhealthy and expensive – prices starts at least twenty pesos up to hundreds of pesos. The food boxes served are guaranteed to contain food that can give the nutrition and satisfaction a person needs.
The need for food anytime and immediately is also what the product solves. Most of the time, UP students do not have the time to prepare food for themselves for almost all their time is spent on reviews, projects, papers, events, and so much more. The food box is exactly what they need for it can be easily bought and consumed. It would take them less time to have a meal.
The business takes advantage of the students’ lack of time and health.
Getting raw materials from suppliers of rice, vegetables, meat, oil, paper box, spork and paper straws, the workforces of the business prepare the food in the stall located in Lopez St., Los Banos, Laguna.
There would be three ways for the customers to purchase the products. The first is buying directly from the stall. The customers would pay fifty pesos for a food box then get their meal from the rotating toy train in the stall. The second is calling for a home delivery which is free at any time of the day. And lastly, they can call for a reservation and pick up their food boxes at a set time. The food stall is available for service twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
For the business to be known by the people, there would be tarpaulins, and flyers that can serve as advertisements – focusing on the business’ fast service, cheap price and quality of the product. Since we want to target UP students with an allowance of two hundred pesos a day, we would put up these tarpaulins and give out flyers inside the campus, along the Lopez St., and inside the dormitories and apartments.
There will also be promotions like getting a free food box when you buy five or earning points – which can be used to buy products – for every food box.
Last but not the least, the customer to customer recommendation. This is the most influential way of promotion because it uses more people without having to pay them. However, the business should ensure a quality taste of the product so that it would be worth telling. A very satisfied customer would tell his friends about the product and this would cause a “gossip” that the product is really good resulting to having more customers.

Production Aspect
Technology and Innovation
In terms of the technology to be used by the business, the management team decided to use a toy train to attract the customers with a new way of serving the food. This toy train symbolizes the speed of service provided by the business, knowing that one of the primary objectives of the business is convenience.
Other technologies to be used are the stove and rice cooker. The Food Box will be serving freshly cooked rice meal for its customers. A motorcycle will also be used to deliver the food to the customers that are not able to visit the stall or customers who order in bulk. These technologies will be needed to achieve the objectives of the business.
In terms of innovation, the management decided to use a toy train in serving the food to the customers to lessen the work of the manpower inside the stall, and to attain efficiency. There will also be an innovation in the food presentation. The food container is patterned after the vascular cambium of the tree, which contains the phloem and the xylem. Since the food and drinks will be placed inside a single container, there will be a division inside the food box.
Scope of the Business
The activities of the business include the preparation of the raw materials to be used in cooking. Rice will be cooked separately first, followed by the addition of the vegetables, meat, and spices that will result into a fried rice.
The preparation of drinks will also be done. The management will ensure that the drinks will be cold and refreshing enough to quench the thirst of the customers.
The packaging will only be done when an order is placed to secure the quality of the product. The oiliness will be reduced, and freshness will be attained. The food will be placed in the container first before the drinks.
Bookkeeping and inventories will be done in order to keep track of the quantity of goods and products, and to determine whether or not the business firm earned.
Suppliers of the Business
There will be several suppliers that the business management team negotiated with. The meat to be used will be supplied by San Miguel Foods Corporation. Vegetables will be supplied by Dizon Farms, rice will be coming from Burgos, Isabela. Cooking oil will be supplied by Nutri-Asia Inc. in Taguig City, and Asia Brewery Inc. in Cabuyao, Laguna will supply the mineral water. The food containers, spork, and straws will be made by Precision Master Technology Inc. in Quezon City.
Management Team
The management team will be composed of five (5) persons to ensure the efficiency of work, to secure the quality of products and services, and to make sure that objectives are achieved.
The Manpower
The manpower of the business will be composed of five (5) persons: two (2) cooks, two (2) sales clerks, and one (1) accountant/ bookkeeper.
The cooks should have at least three (3) years of experience in cooking to make sure that they have already mastered the different cooking techniques and kitchen safety. They must also be aware of the hygiene practices before, during, and after cooking to secure health safety. The cooks will have a hands-on training for seven (7) days to be familiarized with the business operations.
The sales clerks must have at least two (2) years of experience as a cashier or the similar works to maintain a friendly atmosphere in the business stall. They must be good in customer relations and fluent in speaking both English and Filipino. They will be screened, and will have a one to one training afterwards for improvement.
The accountant or bookkeeper must have at least three (3) years of work experience as a bookkeeper, and must at least be an BS Accountancy graduate or must have attained a diploma in bookkeeping (one offered by TESDA).
The workers will be from the unemployed friends or friends of friends who are willing to help in the establishment of the new business firm.

Financial Aspect
The computed average initial investment resulted to about Php 87, 071.75. This includes all the general expenses on the things and permits that are mainly used for the business. All costs that are paid in year one encompass the payments of the motorcycle, stove, pans, rice cooker, food stall, fluorescent lights, electric fan, kitchen utensils, mayor’s permit, barangay clearance and the business registration (DTI). Among all the payments, the entity with the largest share on the cost is the motorcycle that contributes by as much as Php 62, 000, in which is then followed by cost of the food stall that is about Php 12, 000. And the entity with least contribution to the cost of initial investment is the pans with a contribution of about Php 150.
Food Box targets to sell 7 500 food boxes to be sold per month priced at Php 50 each summing up to a total of Php 375 000 pesos sales per month. Furthermore, the business projects a total of Php 4 562 500 pesos annual sales.
The estimated monthly expense in raw materials which may include the oil, paper box, rice, meat, vegetables, mineral water, juice powder, paper straw and spork, in which are to be used for the food box business reaches up to Php 293, 475. Secondly, the payments for the cooks, salesclerks and accountant makes up a labour type monthly expense of about Php 51, 000. The monthly expense for the utilities on the other hand, which may include the electricity, water, postpaid plans, LPG and fire extinguisher, reaches up of about Php 4, 888 a month. In addition to that the SSS and Phil health benefits contributes of about Php 6, 125. And for other expenses like the rent of the space and the expenses for fuel for the delivery transportaions arrive at about Php 13, 962. 50. The compute expense per month of raw materials, labour types, utilities, benefits and other expenses reaches of about php 369, 720. 50. If this rate is to be multiplied by each month of the year, the total annual cost results to about Php 4, 436, 646.

...Discussion paper Do you agree with the concept that there is only one social responsibility of business- to use it's resources and engage in activities to increase it's profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in free and open competition without deception or fraud? I feel that businesses have an obligation when it comes to social responsibilities to not only act ethically but to act responsibly when it comes to all business engagements.
