Target markets for the iPhone and BlackBerry are starting to overlap. The iPhone is a media consumer's dream, playing movies and music with ease. But it's not as finely tuned for the corporate user; large companies have resisted letting employees use iPhones on corporate networks

The iPhone accounted for 16.1% of the market in the quarter, compared to 10.9% the same period a year ago, IDC said in releasing its quarterly report Friday. In terms of shipments, Apple shipped 8.8 million units, a 131.6% increase from the 3.8 million shipments a year ago.

Blackberry 10 Features

...Arnaldo Perez Consumer Behavior Current Topics Assignment 2/13/13 Blackberry 10: The topic I will be covering is the Blackberry 10. Upon its initial press-conference (no official U.S. release yet), many smart phone users turned it’s eye towards the former leader of smart phones to see what the rumored Blackberry 10 would consist of, and with much anticipation there was a lot of praise as well as skepticism. The Blackberry team (run by Research In Motion: RIM) displayed the new models: the touch screen Z10 and its QWERTY Keyboard counterpart (for those who still demanded a keyboard). Features that were innovative to the new Blackberry 10 (aside from full-screen touch capability, video chat that other phones offered) is the brilliant Blackberry HUB. The HUB allowed for easier view of the things that “everything important to you easy to view in a single space”. The HUB is powered by single swipes to view messages, get in and out of menus, programs for easier multitasking, therefore leaving the pages that you are currently on in menu blocks (similar to the windows phone square tiles). The big issue with the new Blackberry 10, are trying to gain back all the customers that it lost to iPhones and Android powered devices. Blackberry has not kept up with the ways of these smart phones since 2011 (when Android had grown in popularity). This brand is a cult classic, famous for its comfortable size and keyboard, it lacked in many areas. In a market where it is now pre-dominantly...

Rim Case Paper

...Case Analysis 2 - Research in Motion - RIM 1. What were some of the challenges that RIM faced to protect its intellectual property, and how did RIM handle those challenges? Research In Motion (RIM), a global leader in wireless innovation, revolutionized the mobile industry with the introduction of the BlackBerry® solution in 1999. There are multiple examples of the challenges RIM faced to protect its Intellectual Property as well as how those challenges were handled. One such example is RIM vs Glenayre Technologies, Inc. This claim, a response to an earlier suit brought forth by Glenayre, insisted that Glenayre blatantly imitated BlackBerry technology and marketing. Later in 2001, Glenayre's initial 1999 patent suit against RIM was dismissed. In early 2002 RIM and Glenayre agreed to drop their remaining lawsuits and work together to develop a wireless e-mail device that would incorporate Glenayre's messaging software. During this same time, RIM also obtained a U.S. patent called the BlackBerry Single Mailbox Integration patent, which covered technology that gave users the ability to have a single e-mail address on both wireless and desktop systems (http://www.answers.com/topic/research-in-motion-ltd-usa). The patent applied to the system and method that RIM pioneered for redirecting information between a host computer system and a mobile communications device. Another instance in which RIM was forced to protect its Intellectual Property is RIM vs. Handspring (makers...

This has allowed competitors to enter the market with newer innovations and better research to please consumers. By initially only targeting the business professional, Blackberry eliminated their appeal to a large chunk of the market. The new proposed target market of young professionals, 18-25, was evaluated through focus groups. The focus groups allowed insight into consumer demands, which included reliability for use in everyday life. The launch and creation of the Blackberry Sport can meet the consumer demands in style as well as technology advancement, which ultimately may make Blackberry the top smartphone once again. ...The ultimate smartphone smackdown of 2008 Smart phones get smarter, more personal By Keith Shaw , Network World , 11/03/2008 http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/110308-guide-mobility-smartphone-showdown.html?page=7 The skinny: Enterprises shouldn't automatically dismiss the iPhone for mobile workers just because it's made by Apple. The company has made an effort with the second-generation iPhone to get into the enterprise, with features such as Exchange support, remote wipe and VPN access. Whether enterprises will bite is up to the company and how stringent their policies are regarding mobile devices. For example, the camera can't be disabled; and enterprise applications either need to be custom-built through Apple's SDK, or purchased through third-party applications in the App Store. Companies that want to mobilize their existing Windows applications for use on the iPhone will find this more difficult than on other devices, where Windows Mobile integration with Windows is easier. The lack of a removable battery is a deal-killer with many mobile workers. Heavy usage on the road will require additional accessories, such as snap-on battery packs or charging cables. Despite these issues, the iPhone provides the best mobile user experience – the Safari browser best emulates a PC Web session, and the ability to access thousands of third-party applications can turn this into the ultimate mobile device for work and for personal use. Consumer Behavior with Iphones

...Consumer Behavior and iPhones Cell phones have essentially become a necessity in most all generations over the past decade. Over the past few years cell phones have become more than just a means of telephone communication due to such strong advances in technology. Now, other than being a form of convenient communication, cell phones have also turned into cameras, computers, and even GPS navigators. The new fad in cell phones are called “smartphones,” which are high-end mobile phones built on a mobile computing platform, with more advanced computing ability and connectivity than contemporary cell phones. The first smartphones were devices that combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) and a mobile phone or camera phone. However, today's models also combine the functions of media players, digital cameras, video cameras, and GPS navigation units. They also typically include touchscreens and web browsers that can access and display standard web pages, and high-speed data access via Wi-Fi and mobile broadband. Years ago smartphones began as an opportunity for business individuals to receive e-mail and keep up with clients, but they are now becoming a phenomena for regular consumers and individuals starting as young as teenagers. The consumer using smartphones is getting younger in age everyday. In fact, to demonstrate the youth of smartphone consumers, my little cousin just got an iPhone for her tenth birthday. Due to the increasing popularity of smartphones...

This took consumers by storm and in the first weekend over 10 million apps were downloaded. Since its release the app store has continued to expand with more apps and better quality apps that now range from E-books to a very humorous fart app. Shortly after Apple had seen rapid success with its app store, other leading Telephone providers like blackberry, Nokia and Android soon released a similar app store for their users. Smartphone

...Malone from ABC News wrote an interesting article on Apple’s iPhone and its overall new product development strategy, with interesting strategic lessons for new product development and business in general. Google Nexus Offers Little Competition to Apple iPhone Why Google’s New Smartphone Won’t Knock Apple Off Its iPhone Throne COLUMN By MICHAEL S. MALONE, ABC News Jan. 1, 2010 Whether the marketplace is ready or not, the Big Guns in consumer electronics are about to make their move at the dawn of the New Year. Next Tuesday, Google is expected to announce its long-rumored Nexus One smartphone. It is undoubtedly designed to run the Google Android operating system for cellphones, which the search giant introduced more than a year ago. Android was envisioned as a major breakthrough in cellphones because it offered an "open" operating system i.e., one that other companies could use and design applications for. At the time, this strategy was compared to that of Microsoft Windows, which broke the market hegemony of Apple’s decidedly non-open OS in the mid-1980s and within a decade, turned Apple into a niche company. This time around, the new Android phones were supposed to break the hegemony of the Apple iPhone. So far, it hasn’t quite worked out that way with Android. A number of cell phone companies notably Motorola, HTC, and Samsung have adopted Android and seen impressive sales. However, this time around Apple, though still exhibiting much of its old "closed" and proprietary...

...Mobile Computing and Social Networks. Abstract Mobile computing has rapidly evolved for the last two decades with the use of wireless technology making the location irrelevant and increasing the opportunities for business to streamline business processes, reduce operational processing times and provide better customer service. Mobile revolution has also forced many industries to reengineer their business processes to accommodate the many mobile devices. Originally founded in 1984 by Mike Lazardis, the company was managed with a dual CEO structure where Mr. Lazardis oversaw technical functions and partner Jim Balsillie oversaw sales/marketing. When stock prices began to falter, shareholder criticism of this leadership style caused both men stepped down for Thorsten Heins. He ran the company until November 2013, when he was replaced by John Chen, following the collapse of a deal with Fairfax to take the company private. Initially the company was a dominant and innovative force in the industry, leading the market for business and government usage. Unfortunately, in recent years the company has declined substantially, with share prices falling from $149.90 in June 2008 to approx. $8.50 by November 2013 (Market Line, 2013).
