INTRODUCTION:
Cardiovascular disease is the number one whooping cause of death throughout the world. In 2011, a staggering amount of 55 million people died globally (Donald 2001). One may skeptically ask why? The obvious answer is because of our lifestyle habits; we control the way we eat, sleep, spend time with others and exercise. Every habit of ours affects the systems in our body.

The purpose of this step test is to determine whether the rhythmic paces of the heart affect the cardiovascular system. It compares the heart rates of different individuals with various degrees of well-being - some healthy and some not so healthy. According to the World Health Organization, the heart beats approximately 40-100 times per minute (Friel ????). In comparison to the average person, the heart rate of athletes ranges between 40-60 beats per minute. This suggests that a healthier individual can carry out metabolic processes much more proficiently than an unhealthy person.

HYPOTHESIS:
• Alternate Hypothesis (Ha)- Pulse rate and recovery time is inversely proportional with a healthy cardiovascular system.
• Null Hypothesis (Ho)- Pulse rate and recovery time has no correlation with a healthy cardiovascular system.

MATERIALS:
The step test experiment took place with various materials including a stopwatch with a second hand, a paper for recording observations, a pencil for noting down observations, a 3kg container with rocks enclosed to determine if heart rate varied with those who had a container and those who did not, a 9-inch step for executing the process and a calculator for determining average mean and standard error of the mean (SEM).

METHOD FOR EXECUTING THE EXPERIMENT:
The Biology 1000 class conducted the step test experiment to determine whether heart rate varied with healthy and unhealthy individuals. The class was divided into

The heart rate (HR) is each full beat, or each pump, the heart does; this is recorded in beats per minute (bpm). The blood pressure (BP) is the amount of resistance the heart works against the arterial walls during each pump. My hypothesis for this lab was that my subject would have the same HR and BP for each of the locations and different methods used.
