Question 1: what do you describe as Panera’s purpose, mission and strategy? Use the firm’s website for the further information and assistance.
Panera bread started their journey from 1997. Ron Shaich, the owner of this company is operating this company very well to move the business forward. * Panera’s purpose: Panera bread wants to operate its business with the purpose of satisfying customers with fresh baked breads, gourmet soups and efficient service.

* Panera’s Mission: “A loaf of bread in every arm.”

* Panera’s Strategy: For a new franchise like Panera is not easy to be successful within a very short time. But their strategy was to understand the long term trends at play and getting the organization ready to respond to it. They were very careful in terms of responding according to the need of the customers. That’s why before customers starts complaining about trans fat, Panera bread voluntarily eliminate it from the menu. So their strategy is hitting the bulls’ eye.

Question 2: How well has Ron Shaich utilized the open system model of organizations in moving Panera Bread Company forward in its competitive environment?
We know, an open system is a system which constantly interacts with its environment. In business, the open system model focuses on the impact of external factors in an organization.
This system regularly exchanges feedback with its external environment. In an open system, inputs, processes, outputs, goals, assessment and evaluation, and learning all are important. Healthy organizations regularly try to understand their environments through use of environmental scanning, market research and evaluations.
So, we can see Ron Shaich utilized the open system model of organizations very successfully in moving Panera Bread Company forward in its competitive environment by * Quick Casual dining * Introducing Wi-Fi * Serve etiquettes * Homely environment * Staffing * Quality Product * Monitoring trend

* Input: Panera utilized the concept of Quick Casual dining in their outlets to give their customers a very comfortable and homely feeling. The food is served with proper etiquettes by the workers. The Managers and Assistant Managers are very skilled and experienced in food service industry. It offers Wi-Fi in more than its 700 stores to its customers. These are all inputs of Panera’s open system model.

* Output: Panera offers a wide variety of soup and sandwiches, soufflés, salads, panini, pastries and sweets. Most of the menu offerings have bread as their key component and Panera’s bread are handmade and baked fresh daily. So Panera provides quality product towards their customers as their output.

* Learning: Panera constantly monitors the market so that they can predict the long term trends and orient the company towards innovation. This way they can also proactively respond to any situation in the marketplace if needed. For example: Panera voluntarily removed trans fat from its menu when it was becoming a growing concern to their customers and medical community. It is a part of learning in the open system model of Panera.

Question 3: What are the challenges to the management process posed by the Panera’s fast paced growth? What problems do you see Shaich having to resolve to continue his record of success with the firm?
Fast paced growth requirements which challenges Panera bread- * To open 15 or more stores each year within a defined geographical area. * Owner requires considerable financial investment and business experience. * Owner must need multi unit operating experience.
But,
* It may not possible to open so many outlets each year or defined geographical area because demand may not be strong on every area. * Both the financial solvency and business operating experience may not come together on one person. * Person may not have the experience of operating multi unit operating experience.
Shaich has to resolve these problems in order to continue his record of success with the firm.
