Causes of stress among students

The Counselling Club recently carried out a survey to find out the causes of stress among students. About 100 students were chosen from Form 4 and Form 5 to participate in this survey. The survey was carried out in SMK Kuala Kubu Bharu.
The main cause of stress in a student’s life is examination. This predicament is felt by students across the board, whether they are good students or weak ones. Good students feel burdened with the expectation heaped upon them by distinctions as a means of obtaining scholarships, good students have to achieve near-perfect cause in order to be consider for these scholarships. Weak students, on the other hand, face the pressure coping with their schoolwork and passing examination. They need to put in extra hours of work and attend tuition classes just to get by in school. The fear of failing is a major cause of stress of these students as their future depends on how they perform in school examination.
Peer pressure is another cause of stress among student today. Students have to deal with issue such as fitting in with their friends and keeping up with the latest trends. Many students feel pressure into partaking in questionable activities with their friends are involved in. This can be conflicting for students who are aware of what is right and wrong.
Bullying is another cause of stress face by students. Students who are victims in bullying, teasing and threats by other students feel inferior and insecure. More often than not, they are too afraid to complain as they are fear. Perpetrators of bullying also experience stress as they might be experiencing emotional problems that lead to the bullying behavior.
Another source of stress among students is problems faced at home. Many students come from home where there is little or no communication between parents and children. As such, children are left with little guidance and can easily go astray. Other children have to deal with parents or siblings who do not get along with each other. Divorce, separation and financial are all also causes for stress in the home.
Eliminating stress is easier said than done. Some students seek the help of councellors or trusted elderly relatives. Unfortunately, others turn to unhealthy solution such as drugs and alcohol which only provide temporally solution and eventually lead to a higher level of stress. When students find themselves in stressful situation, they should take some time off to rest and relax. They could also make time for leisure activities they enjoy. Last but not least, they should think positive and tell themselves that thing are a bound to improve in the future.

Excessive consumption of alcohol can cause addiction, and this situation are known as alcoholism which is more dangerous because one cannot do without alcohol. Consumption of alcohol is dangerous because it causes disorder, road accidents if drunken people drive, can cause miscarriages to pregnant mothers, loss of jobs due to failure of one’s responsibilities at work and divorce among many others. Research shows that freshmen in colleges consume alcohol at much higher rates than other students. This may be because the young adults love to experiment with alcohol and most of them it’s their first time to have faced decisions about alcohol. Stress is also viewed as a factor that makes these students drink since many of them when interrogated claim that they drink to reduce stress. Stress is a major cause of alcohol consumption to college students because just a little consumption of it, makes one feel closer to his friends, his mood is lifted high, one starts paying attention to the moment and so, they end up becoming more care free. Alcohol consistently reduces the body's physiological stress reaction. This is dangerous because overtime it may become a vicious circle and one will be forced to drink more and more to gain its stress-decreasing effects. Major causes of stress among fresh college students These freshmen undergo a transition from high school...

Stress

...Executive Summary Table of Content 1.0 Introduction Newth (2011) defines stress as an applied force or systems of forces which tend to strain an individual body in such a way that the particular individual experiences the feeling of ‘not being in control’. From the psychology point of view, stress can also be considered as a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs an individual’s physical or mental equilibrium (Psychology Today, 2014). Given that numerous stressful events are capable of triggering different responses in human beings, it is fair to say that stress is an event that is omnipresent in every part of life; and hence is worth exploring. Significant investigations and debates into the issues of stress, its determinants and who are generally susceptible to stress have been rife in recent decades (Langan-fox and Cooper, 2011). The general consensus is that frequent exposure to traumatic events is the vital stressor for stress and everyone is susceptible to traumatic events and stress (Langan-fox and Cooper, 2011). Externalisation of stressful behaviours as a result of being exposed to traumatic events such as severe neglect, abuse and repeated violence is clinically termed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2013). It has been maintained that PTSD creates psychological and physical imbalances in sufferers; and affects their physical and mental well-being negatively (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2013). From this standpoint...
