Character-based leaders are people who have chosen to adopt a leader’s mindset, regardless of their position in the organization. These individuals demonstrate clear ethical standards regardless of the status-quo approach taken by others. Codifying an individuals style of leadership is dependent on the relative importance they place on values. Some individuals value equality, freedom, and a comfortable life above all else; others may believe that family security and salvation are important goals (Hughes, 2014 p. 154). In terms of instrumental values, such individuals may think it is important always to act in an ambitious, capable, and honest manner, whereas others may think it is important only to be ambitious and capable (Hughes, 2014 p. 154). By virtue of social, religious or other varying factors that may influence a persons’ ethical outlook or approach on leadership, the same remains constant in regards to their style. The influence they exemplify is a visibly and intentionally role modeling ethical behavior (Hughes, 2014 p.166). Leading by who you are rather than your title. An informal leader is someone within an organization or work unit who, by virtue of how he or she is perceived by his peers (or others in the organization) seen as worthy of paying attention to, or following.
People may be willing to follow the informal group leader due to their social ties, longevity within the organization, or a well developed level of misplaced trust in the formal leader or general work place atmosphere.

Colin Powell would be great example of a character-based leader. During his career in the military he was focused on the mission at hand and the sense of responsibility he undertook as a leader to fulfil the mission he entrusted to complete while protecting the lives of those he commanded.
