Trust is very important, but be careful to whom you give it to because the person you trust the most, could one day be the person you despise. “Trust is like a like a piece of paper, once it's crumpled it can’t be perfect again,” so trust can be broken as easily as a toothpick, but you will have to climb mountains to put it back together. Avi, the author of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, takes the theme of the book a huge step further when she proves that Charlotte is lost in the world of trust. This is shown when Charlotte decides to give trust to the Captain, in the meantime, she is thinking if she should trust this new person Zacharia. An example in the book, when Charlotte and the Captain’s trust is shown when they have a talk on page 45, “As for your meals, you may join me whenever you choose.” Therefore the quote here explains the relationship between Charlotte and Captain Jaggery. …show more content…
Their trust does not always seem to be the same throughout the journey in the book, especially when she discovers that he is in league with the other crew members plot. She now does not know who to trust, although she still thinks that Zachariah could be trusted, but the Captain thinks otherwise. According to the text trust was given in many ways, first Charlotte had trusted in many people, but to gain trust again or to try to earn it, you will have to face challenges even bigger than anything you have ever seen. Therefore when Charlotte decided to join the crew, she had to face the highest sail on the main mast. The text had stated on page 118 that the main mast was about “130 feet up.” Charlotte thought that the only way to have the crew trust her would be to face any challenges they had in store for

Charlotte Doyle Quotes

...believe if you keep your faith, you keep your trust, you keep the right attitude, if you're grateful, you'll see God open up new doors.”Charlotte Doyle’s actions lead her to not knowing who she can trust and not letting other people trust her. In the story Charlotte Doyle, by Avi, the theme of the novel is trusting others. The first reason why the theme trusting others fits the book Charlotte Doyle is when Charlotte first meets Zachariah in chapter 2 on page 24. In that scene, Zachariah offers to be her “final friend” and he is looking past their differences. Charlotte doesn’t think that she can trust him, also she says that she doesn’t need a friend. This shows that she doesn’t care for trusting other people. You always need a friend that you can talk to, and especially for Charlotte since she has no companions on the ship. After this happens, Zachariah trusts Charlotte enough, to give her a dirk. Knowing that she wouldn’t hurt him. So, although Charlotte doesn’t trust Zachariah, he trusts her....

...There is one lesson that seems to be common in a lot of stories. A lesson about how to live your life and to learn to do things for yourself. This lesson I saw in many of the readings/films we read/watched in class, some examples include: Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Sign of the Four by Arthur Conan Doyle and, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These stories are all very different but share that same lesson of putting matters into your own hands. Trust no one or you will be hurt or put into danger. In Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, you can’t trust the government. The government also known as The Party, watches it’s citizens and will vaporize anyone just for doing something as simple as having an individual thought. In any society you should be able to trust the government. Maybe not completely but enough to know you won’t be killed just for thinking. “For how could you establish even the most obvious fact when there existed no record outside your own memory” (Orwell 24)? This quote describes that the Party doesn’t keep records of the past, the records that are kept are constantly changed. People have so little memory of their past that Winston can’t even remember the beginning of the Party’s rule or his childhood. Another example about the government is even the children will turn you in for anything. The children are junior spies that could have you vaporized. “You’re a traitor!’ yelled the boy...

I Will Not Be Yours (Jane Eyre)

...I Will not Be Yours from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë Self-respect helps remember what we value and who we wish to be. If you do not respect yourself and cannot stay true to your own morals and standards it is difficult to be satisfied with your choices - what it truly takes to be happy with our actions is not the respect given by others, but the ability to respect yourself and keep your self-respect intact. Self-respect is closely connected with the feeling of dignity and confidence in oneself. “I Will not Be Yours” is a fictional text, an extract from a novel called Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë published in 1847. Jane Eyre is the protagonist and a first person narrator in the extract. The extract is a dialogue between Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester. The dialogue tells a lot about Jane Eyre and of her self-respect and beliefs. Jane appears to be a religious person who indeed believes in God and his words for example when she tells Rochester to trust in God and believe in heaven and justifies herself “I will keep the law given by God; Sanctioned by man.”, if Jane does as Rochester wants her to and becomes his mistress, it would be bigamy and secondly offend the marriage and laws given by God. Jane does not want to give up her integrity to become Mr Rochester’s mistress and have a chance to love and free her passion. Although Jane does stay true to herself and God a part of her wants to give in and allow herself to break the laws of God, “Soothe him; save him; love him; tell...

Dormatory Laundry

...Dormitory Laundry By: Carl Schlotman, Jackie Patterson, and Andy Wolf I. Executive Summary Dormitory Laundry seeks to fill a service that is not currently offered at Queens. Dormitory Laundry would be the first and only laundry service offered at Queens University of Charlotte. Our service would allow students to enjoy more free time with the convenience of not having to do their laundry. This would give students more free time to do their homework to excel academically or enjoy their college experience. By supplying a laundry service that would pick up students clothes from their own dorm buildings, it will be very user friendly for Queen’s Students. Our product is unique because there is no laundry service at Queens. The only option students have is to do their laundry themselves or to take their laundry to dry cleaners for obscene prices. With 800 students living on campus, it makes for a significant market size to scale the business. Our marketing plan can be specialized and focused. We hope to make our service mainstream way of doing laundry among students. Starting with our service, our goal is to always make sure our value proposition to our customers exceeds the cost of the service. One of the ways this can be done is through a persistent effort to always keep the customer in mind. The pricing of our service will be competitive because it is what our customers have told us the price they would pay for the service. As we establish ourselves as a leading service...

She is in love with Lorenzo, a young Christian boy, who her father disapproves of. The relationship between shylock and Jessica is very dysfunctional. Example is when Jessica is talking with Launcelot and she says “I am sorry thou wilt leave my father so; our house is hell, thou a merry devil” (p.30). Jessica detests her home life and wants to leave it behind. She also states “Alack, what a heinous sin is it in me to be ashamed to be my father’s child...I shall end this strife, become a Christian, and thy loving wife” (p.31). How Does Gilman Present Jane In The Yellow Wallpaper

...Gilman with The Yellow Wallpaper Charlotte Perkins Gilman writes this depressing short story called The Yellow Wallpaper that really explores the views of the medical world during the 19th century and how male doctors looked at woman with the postpartum depression as if it was no worse than the simple cold. Gilman uses Jane, a young woman, in her story to help express her own views of the feminist world. Along with these views Gilman uses her own journey and experiences through life to depict how painful and unproductive the rest cure actually was for women that male doctors diagnosed them with. As Jane is locked away in this room she begins to discover the woman inside the wallpaper and as she begins to peel away the paper it’s a way she becomes...

The Importance Of Scripture In The Bible

...If modern day teachings on science, philosophy, or even church councils teach something contrary to Scripture, Scripture has ultimate authority. Many people view Scripture and its role differently, but the underline reason why is based on authority. If someone denies the authority of Scripture, he or she is prone to add or take away whatever he or she pleases. This allows them to become the ultimate authority over Scripture, and their interpretations are based more off of personal preference or cultural norms. However, Scripture should have the last word because it is God’s word. While Christians may not be able to understand every aspect, they can trust that it is good because God is...

The Yellow Wallpaper

...What a Woman Desires, She Must Fight For The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Gilman in 1891, was written as a result of the author’s experience after seeking treatment for chronic nervous breakdowns. Her treating physician, Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, who was the specialist mentioned by name in the story, prescribed a “rest cure”, which consisted of little to no physical activity, and only two hours of mental activity each day. The “rest cure” was typically prescribed to women, perhaps as a means to keep them in their proper place in society. Gilman, who may have been considered to be a feminist in the late 1800s, used the patterned wallpaper as a symbol of the entrapment and repression of women in society. Fredrick Douglass, former slave and famous advocate for human rights in the late 1800s, said of women: [A] woman should have every honorable motive to exertion which is enjoyed by man, to the full extent of her capacities and endowments. The case is too plain for argument. Nature has given woman the same powers, and subjected her to the same earth, breathes the same air, subsists on the same food, physical, moral, mental and spiritual. She has, therefore, an equal right with man, in all efforts to obtain and maintain a perfect existence (Douglass) Women’s rights in society have grown by leaps and bounds throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty first century, however, the traditional attitude of male superiority and the mold of the woman’s role still lingers in...

The Yellow Wallpaper

...The Yellow Wallpaper By: Charlotte Perkins Gilman Conflict is the commotion that is created between characters or their ideas. It could also be the mental dilemma a character might face. In the Yellow Wallpaper, a short story written in the early 1890s in California was able to show a range of conflicts. The Yellow Wallpaper is about a woman who has given birth and is suffering from postpartum depression which was not discovered during that time. The short story is told in the first-person narrative from a woman’s perspective which shows conflict that is created between her and her husband, the society and the yellow wallpaper. The narrator’s mental deterioration is shown in the story clearly and this had created conflicts which the narrator had found her own way of resolving. The major conflict in the Yellow Wallpaper is the conflict between the narrator and her husband. Their conflict is mainly caused by the lack of trust that is inflicted upon their relationship “You see, he does not believe I am sick! And what can one do?” This indicates that the writer’s husband whom is also her doctor doesn’t trust his wife and plays a major role in her ‘nervous breakdown’. “John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him.” The husband, John is a controlling husband that babies his wife and has isolated her from the outside world by putting her in a room because of her alleged illness. John is manipulative and authoritative...
