Oprah was born in a poor rural town of Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 25, 1954. After a troubled childhood filled with sexual abuse by a number of male relatives and friends of her mother, Vernita, Oprah moved to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon, a barber and businessman. She went to Tennessee State University in 1971 and began working in radio and television broadcasting in Nashville. In 1976, Oprah moved to Baltimore where she hosted the TV chat show, People Are Talking. The show became a hit and Oprah stayed with it for eight years. She then hosted her own morning show A.M. Chicago after she was recruited by a Chicago TV station. I think one of my first big “ah ahh” moments came to me during the wellness lecture by Janet DeWan. I struggled in the beginning of the semester with getting back into the mode of studying daily and keeping up with reading and school work as I had been removed from the full time school load for two years during my time as an ICU nurse. I was exhausted and struggling to keep up with my daily reading and studying for multiple very intense courses in this program. I thought I was the only one who was struggling and becoming overwhelmed. I wasn’t alone, and I learned that in talking with my classmates. I was able to talk to them about their own personal struggles and stresses that they were facing with this program as well and we became a support system for each other. Janet Dewan then talked to us about the stresses we face as SRNAs and later in life as CRNAs and the importance of finding our own coping mechanisms for that stress so that we do not lose sight of our focus and desire to become successful CRNAs. In my algebra class, 3 of us sit at a table, with just enough personal space for our textbooks and notebooks. ...Who talk too much The essay “Women talk too much” by Janet Holmes begins by showing many proverbs point out that women are too talkative. She is trying to prove her points through the use of her research from talk show, seminars, and many other areas. Holmes does all she can to demonstrate that women in fact talk less than men. From most of her investigations, we can know that women do not talk too much, and it is men who tend to insist other hear their opinions more than women do. But why everyone would actually care whether women are talking too much or not? This is hard for me to understand. Take it as an example, when four girls hang out to high tea and talk more per hour than four boys being together, why would the boys care since it has no impact on them? He had all of us roaring with laughter. I seemed awkward and halting by comparison. Afterward I put my talk online like I usually do. In this paper I will discuss how his relationship changes with his father, Thomas and people that he meets along the way to acquire his fathers remains. In the story Victor does not have much of a relationship with his father. After his father leaves him and his mother he did not visit his father and only talked to him once or twice on the phone (254). In the movie it is basically the same thing after he leaves but prior to this we see his father being abusive by physically hitting Victor for spilling his beer. To me it is like a love/hate relationship where sometimes Victor is getting along with his dad and likes his company, but other times he hates him because of his drinking and abusive behavior towards him and his mother. In the story, during Victor’s trip to see his father, Thomas tells him stories about his father. Particularly the story of Thomas going to Spokane and Victor’s father finds him there and tells Thomas that he has to look after Victor as a deal for helping him (260). ...Listening to KWMU Radio was a Great Use of my Discretionary Time Let me start this paper off by saying that I’m probably a little biased, since I’ve been listening to KWMU since before I could talk. My father has always been a fan and passed this quality on to me. From ‘Fresh Air’ to ‘Prairie Home Companion’, I’ve heard it all. And there’s rarely a time I can turn on KWMU without enjoying myself. The first reason NPR is a great listen is the quality of the content; NPR has the best quality news programs and storytelling programs of any radio station I have ever heard. Listening to news programs like ‘Talk of the Nation’ or ‘All things considered’ you can really tell that they strive to bring quality news and content to the listeners, not just loud, obnoxious blowhards that appeal to one side of the political spectrum. On NPR they really are trying to inform their listeners, and trying to be as unbiased as physically possible. Reason two would probably have to be some of the great personalities the radio station has. I only have to listen to ‘Prairie Home Companion’ for five minutes before the distinctive voice of Garrison Keillor puts me at ease or has me busting out laughing in my seat.
