...overcome mental blocks and lack of inspiration. Also, historical figures like Sigmund Freud, Charles Dickens, and Charles Darwin, frequently walked to find solutions for deeper questions and thoughts (Loehle, 1990). For example, Harry s. Truman woke up at five in the morning for a ‘vigorous’ walk of a mile or two, wearing a business suit and tie. More modern methods are also used by Steve Jobs who is well known for his walking meetings and Mark Zuckerberg who has also been holding meetings on foot. It seems that they all intuitively knew that physical activity may have helped them to find solutions or even enhance creative thinking. The traditional psychological approach to creativity focuses on the characteristics of creative persons (Barron, 1995; MacKinnon, 1965), but nowadays it is known that the work environment also influences the level, and the frequency of creative behaviour (Amabile, 1996). However, despite the...

...what, in his opinion, made the difference between highly creative and less creative scientists. He replied, "The labor of love aspect is important. The most successful scientists often are not the most talented. But they are the ones who are impelled by curiosity. They've got to know what the answer is."' Schawlow's insights about scientific creativity highlight the importance of intrinsic motivation: the motivation to work on something because it is interesting, involving, exciting, satisfying, or personally challenging. There is abundant evidence that people will be most creative when they are primarily intrinsically motivated, rather than extrinsically motivated by expected evaluation, surveillance, competition with peers, dictates from superiors, or the promise of rewards.^ Interestingly, this Intrinsic Motivation Principle of Creativity applies not only to scientific creativity, but to business creativity as well. Often, financial success is closely tied to a passion for the work itself. Michael Jordan, who by the mid-1990s was the most financially successful basketball player in history, insisted on a "love of the game" clause in his contract—securing for him the right to play in "pick-up" games whenever he wished. Robert Carr, a primary developer of the first pen computer, was captivated by the opportunity to do something spectacular that had never been done before. When entrepreneur Jerry Kaplan described the idea to him, Carr reacted with intense excitement: "Jerry, it's...

Creativity

...novel and of some value. Novel means the unusual nature of the thing that is created whether it is penicillin, the concept of relativity or Gitanjali. The emphasis is on the production of something new. Equally important is the value which means that products of creativity should be of some value to human beings. Creativity can bring forth new products and procedures, remedy conflict and even create opportunity where none exists. Thus, creativity is and always be the most valuable asset. In general, every person is creative to a certain extent. However, everyone does not have the same ability to come up with better ideas provided by a more economical use of time. It is fine to have the ability to count on our creative subconscious for an occasional idea or solution. But to develop spontaneous creativity, we need to do away with assumptions, boundaries and unspoken rules, which are taken for granted. Often, finding a creative solution to a problem requires a creative look at the definition of the problem in hand. Hence, we need to look and think of the problem in different ways and from different angles before we start preparing a list of the different ways of dealing with it. For instance, the discovery of penicillin, formulation of the concept of relativity and creation of television has been turning points in the development of knowledge as well as for human beings and society. Further, Tagore's writings speak certain basic truths I about humanity and seem as powerful now as...

Sternberg’s definition of human intelligence is “(a) mental activity directed toward purposive adaptation to, selection and shaping of, real-world environments relevant to one’s life” (Sternberg, 1985, p. 45), which means that intelligence is how well an individual deals with environmental changes throughout their lifespan. Sternberg’s theory comprises three parts: componential, experiential, and practical. Sternberg associated the workings of the mind with a series of components. These components he labeled the metacomponents, performance components, and knowledge-acquisition components (Sternberg, 1985). The metacomponents are executive processes used in problem solving and decision making that involve the majority of managing our mind. They tell the mind how to act. Metacomponents are also sometimes referred to as a homunculus. A homunculus is a fictitious or metaphorical "person" inside our head that controls our actions,...

Whereinnovationstarts

...Where Innovation Starts Modern businesses today view innovation as a way of achieving rapid growth. It's seen as a necessary component in the success of any business. However, there isn’t a clear consensus on the definition of innovation. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Innovation in two ways; as “a new idea, device, or method” and, “the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods”. Innovation is usually assumed to be the conception of something completely original, but this isn’t entirely true. Innovation is the creation and application of something in a way that has not be done before. It has more to do with execution than it has to do with plain thought or conception. It is practical yet employs creativity. For example, everyone praised Apple’s innovation in the conception of the iPhone and the way it changed mobile computing and telecommunication forever. However it is also well known that Apple invented very little in its design. They took existing technology and found new and coherent ways to apply them in solving problems customers faced in mobile computing and ultimately reinvented the category. With this in mind, every company should seek to innovate as a way to grow their business. The availability of the internet and ready access to information has made this easier than ever before. Founders now join incubators and accelerators as a way to bolster and accelerate their innovation capabilities of their startups in hopes of “growth...
