In the article A Statement of Principles from MarriageMovement.org the authors are precise and direct in their defense of the institution of marriage. They cite numerous studies and researched findings showing the cause and effect of crumbled families and households. From a holistic view the authors’ explanation of taxpayer and social economic factors can be summed up quite simply. A household which depends on a single parent to not only be the sole breadwinner for the family but also the primary caretaker is statistically much more likely to fall at or below the poverty line than a household which can boast a stable married couple at the helm. “Changes to family structure explain 97 percent of black and 99 percent of white families’ poverty spells.” (pg. 9) As a result of less than substantial income, these single parent households struggle to create and foster a home in which children are afforded the same basic opportunities as those who are fortunate enough to be sustained by two married parents. It follows then that these children are more prone to burdensome activities which in some cases directly harm societies, for example, “Boys raised outside of intact marriages are two to three times more likely to commit a crime leading to incarceration by the time they are in their early thirties.” (pg. 9) As such, statistics and research show a higher rate of public costs needed to subsidized and correct many of the problems created by a financially burdened family. Continuing, there is no question that it is a social justice to support those in need, especially the young, so it would be improper to propose that all taxpayer funding be written as unnecessary or wasteful. However, the article notes many economic conditions created by households without stable parents. “Divorced and unwed childbearing create substantial public costs, paid by taxpayers. Higher rates

Why Marriages Fail

...inexorably drawn toward the Party of Government. And research shows it is not only women of childbearing age that are made more dependent on government, but aging men and women in general. To expect a nation of fragmented families to turn away from an expanding welfare state is to expect a miracle. The original social democrats of Europe saw this quite clearly, which is why (especially in Sweden) they crafted social-welfare proposals with an eye to deinstitutionalizing marriage, making mothers less dependent on fathers but more dependent on government. We are at a key crossroads now. Half or more of all children will grow up outside of intact marriages. Yet through arduous effort and public debate we have managed to slow the rate of divorce and halt the growth in unmarried childbearing. Government policy is not everything. But effective changes in welfare policy could help. How? Here are three eminently practical suggestions, supported by research, taken from a recent Institute for American Values policy brief (see www.americanvalues.org). 1) Expand marriage education for low-income couples. Right now, the government suggests to mothers and fathers that the height of responsible fathering is signing paternity papers. Why not ask couples who apply for welfare if they are interested in marriage? If they say no, they say no. But even asking the question serves as an important signal to marriage-impoverished communities: Americans believe marriage matters. 2) Add a marriage...

Children and Parent

...Sharing of Parental Responsibility Act The Equal Sharing of Parental Responsibility Act requires that parents take equal responsibility for the costs of raising their children. The Act begins with a presumption of a fifty/fifty sharing of physical placement of the children between the parents, and neither parent would make support payments to the other. This presumption does not apply if either parent is shown to be unfit. The parties may stipulate to a different placement arrangement under the following guidelines. A per diem cost for raising children, based on the costs of domestic service providers, food, clothing, medical insurance, shelter and entertainment, determined by analysis of actual market costs shall be established by the Department of Health and Human Services. The cost of domestic service providers shall include the cost of day, evening and overnight childcare, doing laundry, food preparation and clean up, chauffeuring children and any other services required when one has children. The parties may stipulate that one parent will pay the other a minimum of 90% of the per diem cost of raising the children, for any days above 183 per year, for which the non paying spouse takes physical placement of the children. Taxes and social security shall be deducted and paid for the portion of this per diem cost which is service related. All divorcing parents will be required to take a parenting class. A. ...standard deduction to each filing status. 3. Determine whether an individual qualifies as a personal exemption. 4. Distinguish among the five different filing statuses. 5. Apply the tax tables and the tax rate schedules to taxable income. OVERVIEW This chapter discusses the components of the tax formula and studies the implications of the standard deduction to the taxpayer. Additionally, the qualifications for the personal exemption are analyzed. Finally, the basic filing statuses are examined as well as the role of the tax tables and the tax rate schedules. ¶3001 COMPONENTS OF THE TAX FORMULA[->1] Taxable income is computed using one of the two overall accounting methods, the cash method or the accrual method. It is also possible to use a combination of the two overall methods. Under the cash method, income is reported when it is received and deductions are taken when the expense is paid. The accrual method requires income to be reported when all the events necessary to fix the right to receive payment have occurred and there is reasonable certainty regarding the amount. Likewise, accrual basis taxpayers usually claim a deduction in the year in which all events that fix the liability have occurred, provided the amount of the liability is reasonably determinable. A basic understanding of the method used to calculate the tax liability is a necessity in the study of federal income taxation. That method is as follows: |Gross Income| – |Deductions for Adjusted Gross Income...

Lessen the Impact of Divorce

...LESSEN THE IMPACT OF DIVORCE Michael Jennings DeVry University Lessen the Impact of Divorce Charlie is 9 years old and lives in a single parent home where the parent works to support the family, where not much time is spent with Charlie, who must figure certain things out on his own.  Where does Charlie go after school?  If no one is home having Charlie home alone is not a very good option.  If siblings or friends are there but, no adult is present during the after school hours, home is still not a very good option.  The term “latch-key” kid is one who has their own key to their home and is expected to be home with minimal supervision.  Once a child reaches a certain responsible age, being a latch-key kid often makes sense.  Charlie must get home safe from school, stay out of trouble, and complete his homework, with little to no adult supervision.  After-school activities should be available to Charlie because he may not be responsible enough or his parents may not trust him to be home alone yet. Everyone is affected by the consequences of parental divorce, especially the children involved.  In any society, the children are the future.  In the United States alone, 40 to 50% of first marriages end in divorce, according to the American Psychological Association.  As citizens of the United States, we are all stakeholders of our future and should care about the well-being of all our children, especially those of disadvantaged environments such as parental divorce.  Additional resources...

Gay Marriage

...Garcia 1 Christian Garcia 10-24-12 Mr. Bywater English 101 As Miserable as the Rest of Us There are quite a number of opinions and standing views on gay marriage, and the argument regarding whether or not gay marriage should be legalized is extremely controversial. Some people argue that the legalization of gay marriage will change the meaning of the institution of marriage, provide an unfit environment in which to raise a child, and that it will negatively affect our economy. In general the issue of gay marriages is one that raises many questions and concerns. There is nothing wrong with being a “homosexual” or a “bisexual” since one is still an individual that eats, breathes and feels as ‘heterosexuals” do. So why is it that society is critically against same-sex marriages? I believe that there is nothing wrong in expressing affection towards the same-sex as long as one is happy and does not pose a threat to society. One of most commonly heard reasons why homosexuals want to have the right to marry is that they want to legally show their love for each other by having a marriage license. Heterosexuals use the right to marry for the same reasons. They are in love and want to spend their lives with this person. Even though it is possible to do this without being married, they want to honor their relationship in the greatest way our society has to offer. There is no reason two Garcia 2 people cannot marry despite their sexuality. If a man and woman...

Divorce

...Valeria Obando Professor Fonts ENC 1102-2 4 December 2013 Until Divorce Do Us Part Divorce is defined as the legal termination of a marriage, but in its real sense there is a lot more to it than just the end of a relationship. Nowadays many marriages end in divorce, and surprisingly most of them end in their early stages. If divorce rates goes up, people’s level of tension and hesitation about marriage is also increasing. The society accepts divorce very easily and even suggests it as a solution to the trivial problems faced in a husband-wife relationship. Therefore marriages and family life are at risk. If divorce continues to rise in even roughly the same pattern, the traditional sense of marriage might as well become extinct. To add to the existing problem, various law firms and websites provoke divorce through various methods such as advertising the benefits of divorce or by offering customized divorce forms online. The soaring divorces are not just questioning the importance of relationships and ties but they are also creating severe after effects in the life and family of the divorcees. Laws should be reformed to make it harder to obtain a divorce because it would help prevent any emotional, financial, and psychological repercussions. Though divorce at an individual level is a liberating factor for estranged couples, the problem arises when the divorce affects the kids. The author states: “Numerous studies indicate that children of divorced families face increased...

...financially. Here are some of the issues: 1) He is planning on filing for divorce. His wife, Rotunda is a large and violent woman who has spent every penny Bill has made over the years. She has a moustache, missing a few front teeth and generally not a nice person. Ethical issues: Bill and Rotunda’s marriage seemed to change after the birth of their last child. Rotunda’s personality changed and she even put on extra weight. Rotunda continued to spend every penny of her husband’s hard earned money. Ethically, he has every right to want to file for divorce. Bill using the fact that she has a moustache and missing teeth are not a factor here. The mention of Rotunda being violent could be an issue as the divorce proceedings are under way. Choosing to divorce a person should be based on something that isn’t going quite right. You do not need to have a specific reason at all to request a divorce, but most states do have the option of using one of the grounds for divorce as your reason. Having one of these reasons can help your case, but if the two of you are not happy, then a no fault divorce would be the way to go. You are both on level ground and can go your separate ways without your record being tarnished. Choosing to get a divorce is not always an easy decision for either party. Sometimes there is a very good reason to get the divorce and other times, the two people have just grown apart and no longer wish...
