Dial-Up/High Speed I’ve had my share of internet services in the past, but there are big differences between that services that they have out there today. We have dial-up, cable, satellite, and high speed internet services. I have only experience dial-up and high speed, and there are a big differences just between the two of them. Dial-up and high speed access can be both used to connect to the internet; they both perform the same function. The way the connection is offered are different, one is thru the phone company. This method is called dial-up and the other is thru the cable company, being called high speed access . A dial-up connection has its faults and its advantages, just as high speed has its faults and advantages. With dial-up you have to connect thru the use of your on phone line. That is a disadvantage because you are not able to make or receive calls while you are online. With a high speed connection you have free use of the phone while being online. You will most likely purchase a firewall program with will cost money, and you’re online with no long distance charges and with your connection to the internet, you also get an internet provider instead of having to find one. With a dial-up connection you have to have a local provider, for the internet if you do not have a local provider you will have to seek out an internet provider; yet they both achieved the same goal, but at different ways of connecting to the internet. For an example to open a file that has been sent to you that contains a picture normally would take the dial-up connection eight to ten minutes to open. It would take the high speed connection about a minute if that to open the same file. However you have this connection at all times verses the dial-up were you have to connect each time you need the use of the internet, and also at the rate it took to download program from the internet. The price of the dial-up connection averaging around twenty one dollars a month; even though that is cheap you get what u pay for. So my advice to you is to get high speed; it cost more but it’s better than dial-up hands down. Now that I have a connection to the internet thru cable I’ll have to worry about hackers because my computer is connected to the internet all the time. The dial-up connection is slow verses the connection to the high speed access which is normally ten time faster. The high speed access being provided thru a separate connection thru the use of a cable line other than the one that connects to your television. The deciding factor in choosing one over the other would come down to price and the amount of patience one would have in their connection speed to the internet. When comparing the similarities of price plans, dial-up connection has the advantage over the high speed connection to the internet.
