OBJECTIVE.

1. RAPID PROTOTYPING MANUFACTURING.
1.1 DEFINITION.
Rapid prototyping manufacturing is a group of techniques used to manufacture, in a fast way, a model of a specific piece generating a model in CAD, (Computer Aided Design), with 3D data as fast as possible. Nowadays is used as one manufacturing process more. An example is found in the dental sector, in which it is used to manufacture the metallic structures that will be coated by ceramic creating dental crowns and bridges.
The most used technique is the 3D printing or additive layer manufacturing.
The first methods of rapid prototyping manufacturing were available in 80’s. Nowadays, is expanded, and as I mentioned, is not only to make prototypes, it is use to produce small series …show more content…
Then, we can say that rapid prototyping manufacturing has as possibilities of creation as we can imagine. Always thinking about accelerate the design phase and achieve a clearly idea of the design as we have it physically.

1.3 EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES.
3D printing allows us to create a model of a piece to validate the geometry of it, correct mistakes and make modifications in the design with a low cost.
But, how do it create this complex geometry so easy? 3D printing takes data from a CAD software, evaluates the geometry in three dimensions by parallel horizontal layers as close as accurate could be the piece. In this way, a solid volume is generated from a lot of horizontal sections.
This is possible to do with different technologies:
• SLA, Stereolithography: it is based on the solidification of a photosensitive resin layer by layer. Uses a beam of laser light with certain frequencies and powers.
• SGC, Photopolymeration by UV light: Based on solidification, as the SLA, but the difference is that solidifies radiating a powerful UV light and working on all points of a section at a …show more content…
• Airframe and aircraft engine parts.
• Marine chemical parts.
• Condenser tubing.
• Heat exchangers.
Powder specification
The Arcam Titanium Grade 2 powder has a particle size between 45 and 100 microns. This limit on the minimum particle size ensures safe handling of the powder.
Microstructure.
Titanium Grade 2 parts manufactured in the EBM process have a microstructure consisting of fine α-grains, thanks to the rapid cooling of the melt pool. The build chamber is kept at an elevated temperature throughout the entire build, and the material thus comes out of the EBM process in a naturally aged condition.
