Near the end of the novel, Lina meets a young girl, Janina. She repetitively talks about Liale, her doll who was thrown in the air and shot by the guards. She thinks her doll is dead but she still talks to her. Since she is so young, an event as violent and terrifying as the holocaust will be very traumatizing for her.
