This story is about an old man named Mr. Peters that gets three wishes because he saves a swan in distress, despite the swan fighting back. Little did he know that swan was actually the forest king! With a scowl on his mouth, the king retorted
“Well sir, I see you are presumptuous enough to know some of the laws of magic. You think that because you have rescued-by good fortune-the King of the Forest from a difficulty, you should have some fabulous Reward.” Of course, the man demanded three wishes, nothing more than less. Reluctantly, the kind forked over three magical leaves, which each contained the power to give the owner one wish.
“I wish I had a wife as beautiful as the forest.” He said. An incredible quacking and splashing emitted from the pond, almost sounding like the swan ruler was cracking up. Trying to ignore the cackling of the king, the man strolled to his car, wrapped himself with a rug and fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, there before him was the most beautiful creature “… with eyes as blue-green as the canal, hair as dusky as the bushes, and skin as white as the feathers of swans…” from the third wish. Her name was Leita, and in the old man’s opinion, she made the perfect wife: she was gentle and friendly, cleaned the house, and cared for him greatly. But over a course of weeks, Leita started to get very sad, and the only time she was happy was when she returned from mysterious one and a half hour trips with no explanation.
One day, Mr. Peters was returning home when he saw Leita sobbing with her hands around another swan, who was crying too. Suddenly, everything clicked in place. Of course Leita was too beautiful to be a human, it was because she wasn’t a human, she was a swan! And the swan she was holding so tenderly was someone that he had torn her away from. Troubled, the man asks her, what’s wrong, and she responds: “This is my sister; I can’t bear being separated from her.” Sorrowfully, he asks her if she would like it if she changed the sister into a human. Leita said no, that being a human was too much of a pain to inflict on anyone else. Then he asks if she wants to be turned back into a swan. “Who would darn your socks and cook your meals and see to the hens?” He tried to plead with her to leave, but she told him that even though she was part swan, she was also part human, and she had human responsibilities that she needed to fulfill. Mr. Peters tried everything in his willpower to make Leita happy, long drives in the car, finding beautiful music for her to listen to on the radio, buying clothes for; he even suggested a trip around the world! But of course, she declined, saying that she wanted to stay near the river. One night when Mr. Peters was up late doing work, he heard Leita crying to herself, wailing:” Rhea! Rhea! I can’t understand what you say! Oh wait for me. Take me with you!”
Sadly, Mr. Peters knew what to do. He picked up the second leaf, gave Leita a kiss, and blew the leaf into the air, and she transformed back into a swan. He nudged her awake and she flew into the forest. As Mr. Peters grew old and gray, the villagers always wondered about him. Why did he stay so far away from the village if he was wrecked with rheumatism, it would be much safer if he was in a drier area. But he stayed there because of the two swans that always came to visit him, that stayed with him always. And when he was found dead in his bed, he held in his hand a withered leaf and a white feather.

Walt Disney has had a profound effect on many people and will continue to have for many years to come. In 1901, on December 5th in Chicago, Illinois, Walter Elias Disney was born to Elias and Flora Disney. Even though he loved to draw, moving to a farm near Marceline, Montana in 1906 is probably what influenced his later creations. His first drawings were creations of farm animals. At the age of sixteen his family returned to Chicago where he attended McKinley High School. His real interests were at night when he took courses at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He enlisted in Military service during World War I, but was rejected because of his young age of sixteen. He then joined the Red Cross where he spent a year overseas driving an ambulance. The exterior of his ambulance was covered all over with his cartoon drawings. After World War I, he returned to Kansas City, where he began his career as an advertising cartoonist. Here, in 1920 he created and marketed his first original animated cartoons. A few years later, he perfected a new method for combining live-action and animation. The Civilizing Process and the Domestication of Fire

...of The Civilizing Process (first published in German in 1939, and in English in 1982) Norbert Elias studied changes in manners, society, and personality in western Europe over the period roughly from 850 to 1850. The documentary evidence upon which he based his argument was mainly derived from the second half of this period, from 1350 to 1850. The purpose of the study was to arrive at a better understanding of the contemporary world, and of its social and psychological problems.1 Now, by any conventional standards the period from 1350 to 1850, not to speak of the millennium from 850 to 1850, is a very long time. Yet, when we take into account the full history of human civilization, it is short: an episode, no more. Consequently, since Elias’s focus was upon the changes that have taken place in western Europe since 1350, certain underlying patterns in human history had to remain in the background. Elias himself was aware of this, and in later writings he 1 Journal of World History, Vol. 3, No. 1 © 1992 by University of Hawai‘i Press *This is the slightly abridged text of the first Norbert Elias lecture, delivered at the University of Leicester on 6 March 1991. 1 For further information on the book and its background, see Stephen Mennel, Norbert Elias: Civilization and the Human Self-Image (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1989). The Established & the Outsiders Essay

...Sasha Nowak 4/13/12 Sociology The Established & the Outsiders Essay Social structure can be represented in many ways and through many ideas, such as in a community or city. When two of them are compared to one another, there’s bound to be many similarities and differences between them. For instance, the area in and around Norwich University can be easily compared to the setting of the novel, The Established & the Outsiders. The novel is set at a place called Winston-Parva, a suburban area in the outskirts of a large and wealthy industrial town in central England. It had a population of less than 5000, but had its own industries, schools, churches, shops and clubs. The two authors, Elias & Scotson, conducted their study though the book and formed a social structure by categorizing the town into 3 different zones, 1, 2, and 3. Zone 1 was usually called a middle-class residential area, and most of its inhabitants regarded it as such. Zones 2 and 3 were working-class areas one of which, Zone 2, is where most of the industries were established. From this info alone one could assume that since Zone 2 and Zone 3 seem the same, the inhabitants of those zones think that as well. However, the novel states a survey that proves the previous assumption to be false: “A preliminary survey suggested that not only the middle-class inhabitants of Zone 1, but the working-class inhabitants of Zone 2 regarded themselves and their neighbourhood as superior in social status to those...

American Civilisation

...to themselves and others by the use of guns, and the murder rate is about four times as high per capita as in Western Europe. The usa is the world’s remaining super-power – yet internally the American state is in some ways strikingly weak. The usa has ‘saved the world for democracy’ on more than one occasion – but has itself become an aggressive militaristic society. And there appears to be an increasing divergence between how a large proportion of Americans view themselves and their country and how they are perceived by a large proportion of the 95 per cent of the world’s population who are not Americans. Hunting down myths It has been said that sociologists must be ‘myth-hunters’, tracking down popular beliefs that are ill founded (Elias 1978: 50-70). Whether simply exposing such beliefs to contrary evidence deployed by academics is sufficient to kill off myths and bring them home for mounting on the walls of our university departments is highly debateable. Nevertheless, we have a duty to call them in question, and enter into debate with those who want to keep them alive in the big-game reserve of public opinion. In my recent book The American Civilizing Process (Mennell 2007), I set out to see how far Norbert Elias’s theory of civilising and decivilising processes needed to be modified in the light of American history and how far it applied unchanged to the development of the usa....

Feilas Child Reflective Essay

...countries brought discrimination, racism, and a drastic exploitation of not only the people, but of the land. Although throughout recorded history the African people have lived in conflict, there was always a balance kept with the land that was destroyed by the entrance of the European colonists. Knysna is a crucial setting that held different meanings for the principal characters. Benjamin, taken from the open skies of the Long Kloof, found only sorrow in the forest which for him, and his adopted mother Fiela, represented separation and imprisonment. This same symbolic prison was viewed as a refuge to Nina, who saw the forest as her protector and playmate. Whereas Benjamin was confined by the forest, Nina was liberated by it. To Elias, Nina’s father and tormentor, the forest represented sustenance, trees and animals there for his limitless conquest. One can say that Knysna was transfixed in people’s hearts revealing the very nature of the meaning of life for the characters. We also addressed the life of the author Mrs. Matthee. She explained the unique patterns of life in the forest. It’s very interesting how she projected the identity crisis in her book, as in the case of Lukas, whose origin was unknown. When Matthee wrote Fiela’s Child she was living in the Long Kloof confirming her first-hand knowledge of the setting. In research about Knysna, white’s superiority is presented as an ineffable issue. The highest authority in Knysna (the magistrate), was a white...

Results of a Lie

...Elias Nesheiwat Ms. Yanoti English 101: Critical Response Essay 20 February 2015 Results of a lie What is the reason for lying? When is a lie acceptable? Who does a lie hurt most? These questions are answered in Stephanie Ericsson’s essay “The Ways We Lie.” Ericsson begins by dishonestly calling the bank of her deposit check; stating it was in the mail, when it was not written yet. Lies arose, one after another. It started by explaining to a client her tartness due to traffic, hiding the fact that her day was terrible from her husband and denying a lunch invitation from a friend since she was busy (290).  Lying provides individuals a way to escape confrontation; only during certain situations are lies tolerable; on the other hand lies can hurt the liar and the victim.   It is human nature to lie, but that is not a reason to do such actions. Rather than expressing their true feelings some people believe that lying is easier, and most of the time it is the first choice. Ericsson emphasizes, “We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare peoples feelings” (290). A lie becomes second nature to many; it is the go to option when wanting to dodge certain individuals. Trying to save the feelings of victims of a lie, people run to a dishonest face only fantasizing that the lie will protect the victim’s feelings. Even the small lies counts, when asked how their day was people tend to respond with “good” hiding the fact it was the worst day...

Adhd

...English 1010 ADHD: Amphetamines Don’t Help Disorders There are more drug users in elementary schools today then every before. Most of these users are children around the ages of seven to fourteen. The drugs they use are highly addictive Amphetamines, similar to cocaine. The worst part is these drugs are prescribed to them for behavioral problems in school. The stimulants these children are taking are for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Because these children do not behave the way schools have described as “normal”, they are drugged with harmful synthetic stimulants. Behavior traits in children can be changed by a proper diet, adequate sleep, and positive activities at home. The principle causes of ADHD are unknown. The attempt to classify it as a disease has failed. There are four categories of disease in the medical world: infectious, contagious, traumatic, and systemic. Infectious and contagious diseases have to do with germs so we can rule those out as classifications. Traumatic indicates an outside force such as head trauma or nervous system trauma so that is also ruled out. Systemic diseases happen when the cells or chemicals of the body begin to malfunction such as cancer. This is not correct for ADHD either and so it is not a disease (Stein 23-24). Doctors turn to other causes and classifications of this disorder including genetics. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often appears to run in families...
