...The fear of the unknown Alina Liu The fear of the unknown is rife in Lord of the Flies by William Golding and “The Sufi Tale”. In Lord of the Flies, the “beast” or the “Lord of the Flies” represents the fear of the unknown, while in “Sufi tale” the watermelon is the symbol of fear. The boys in Lord of the Flies react almost the same as the villagers in “Sufi Tale”, they both cower and are afraid of this unknown. The settings of both stories are idyllic, but the fears have ruined the paradise by causing chaos. However the endings of both stories are entirely opposite due to the leaders’ solutions. Since the settings in both stories are both idyllic, lives should be easy, peace, and happy. “The Sufi Tale” happens in a small quiet agricultural village. Villagers use simple tools and have plenty of trees, fruits, and food. People there have happy lives. Although in Lord of the Flies, the boys’ plane crushed, the island is perfect just like the Eden paradise. The boys do not have to worry about food, because the island is full of fruit trees and small animals that they can hunt such as pigs. Also, the weather of the island is warm, so they do not have a problem about how to keep themselves away from freezing at night. Therefore the island is idyllic, even Ralph said “this is a good island” and “we can have a good time on this island”. The Mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The Wedding-Guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience and fear to fascination as the Mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: for example, Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create either a sense of danger, of the supernatural or of serenity, depending on the mood of each of the different parts of the poem. The Mariner's tale begins with his ship departing on its journey. Despite initial good fortune, the ship is driven south off course by a storm and eventually reaches Antarctica. An albatross (symbolizing the Christian soul) appears and leads them out of the Antarctic but, even as the albatross is praised by the ship's crew, the Mariner shoots the bird ("with my cross-bow / I shot the albatross"). The crew is angry with the Mariner, believing the albatross brought the south wind that led them out of the Antarctic. He was the one who introduced Morgan Sengwayo (see testimony on page 21) to the Apostolic Faith. Sengwayo had been evicted from his home by his parents and Muzondo took him in. He told Sengwayo about the Apostolic Faith organization and the teachings of the Latter Rain Gospel. Before long, those teachings were reinforced by Timothy Oshokoya, who visited from Nigeria at Portland’s request. Sengwayo prayed through to his deeper experiences and in time was appointed to lead our Southern Africa work. While Brother Sengwayo’s legacy is well-known, the same is not true of the quiet man who initially taught him this way. Brother Muzondo has already outlived Brother Sengwayo by thirty years and is the surviving pioneer of the Zimbabwe Apostolic Faith work. He has been a stabilizing force in a work that thrives despite a history of national economic and political upheaval. ...Life of Pi Theme of Religion At times, Life of Pi reads like a defense of religion. Has science proved religion wrong? Here's a protagonist who believes passionately in both zoology and religion. What about the fact of multiple faiths? Don't these faiths contradict each other, cause wars, and other problems? Here's a protagonist who is Muslim, Christian, and Hindu – all at the same time. The book defends not only the common spirit behind these three religions, but the rituals and ceremonies of each. It's as if all three religions find harmonious common ground in this character. Seems unlikely, but then again, the protagonist argues passionately that the miraculous happens in our darkest moments. Quote #1But I don't insist. I don't mean to defend zoos. Close them all down if you want (and let us hope that what wildlife remains can survive in what is left of the natural world). I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
