Physical Limitations In Older Adults Population Physical and functional limitations in older adults have significant influences in their daily life. Age-related changes and chronic illness such as dementia, diabetes or arthritis are the causes of decreasing older adults’ physical functions. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 61.1% of older adults over 65 years old in the United States have at least one basic actions difficulty or complex activity limitation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2016). CDC also measures adults’ physically unhealthy days by asking how many days during the past 30 days they felt that their physical health was not good, and older adults over 65 years old have the highest rate …show more content…
According to Healthy People 2020, older adults over 65 years old with at least one activities of daily living limitation or live in a long-term care facility was 29.3% in 2007, and increase to 32.2% in 2011, and the desired target in 2020 is 26.4% (Healthy People 2020, see Figure 1). The demand for long-term care is growing up. United States is facing a growing shortage of nurses, with around 118,000 nursing positions in hospitals currently unfilled (AARP). Recent evidence suggests that physical activity is the best predictor of healthy aging and lower probability of disability in older adults. Further, physical activity in older adults was found out is directly affecting the leukocyte telomere length, which is the most important factor of aging (Khoo & Muller, 2014). Evidence-based physical activity programs such as the EnhanceFitness program offer for older adults over 65 years old in community settings, and it promotes physical and social support for a healthier lifestyle and involves supervised aerobic exercise, flexibility balance training, and strength training (Belza, Bombardier, Hoffman & Rosenberg, 2011). There are great resources and programs around the local community, states, and country that provide services for older adults of physical health, for instance, Davis senior rehabilitation center in Wilmington NC provides fitness center for seniors to exercise; North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services provide community and vocational rehabilitation service for individuals with specialized physical and emotional needs; Go4Life, an exercise, and physical activity campaign from the National Institute of Health, is designed to help individuals fit exercise and physical activity into their daily life.
