According to a collaborative publication from the American Nurses Association’s APRN Consensus Work Group and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s APRN Advisory Committee (2008), the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is a graduate nurse who possesses national certification, advanced knowledge and skills, and who is prepared to responsibly assess, diagnose, and manage the patient’s ailments through the use of pharmacologic and other therapies. Influenced by phenomenology philosophy, this grand nursing theory has the understanding that individuals with the connection to the universe have the ability to decide paths of becoming (Wills, 2011). In order to understand the congruency, the major assumptions, concepts, and relationships of the HBT must be discussed first. According to Malinski (2015), there were initially nine assumptions that were later condensed into three assumptions. The three assumptions of humanbecoming are listed by Maliski (2015) as the following, “…freely choosing personal meanings situated in the intersubjective process of living value priorities, cocreating rhythmical patterns of relating in mutual process with the universe, and contranscending multidimensionally with emerging possibilities” (p. 457). To summarize the three assumptions, human beings coexist and constantly develop patterns of meaning with the environment and others with free will. By creating these patterns of meaning, human beings transcend from where they were with potentiality and a multitude of possibilities to where they will be. It is done by an exchange between a given human and another or more as well as with the environment.
