Fashion and Fads Fashions and fads have been around for as long as anyone can remember. Everyone has their own sense of style, and that changes over time to something new and exciting. The definition of fashion was described as a social pattern favored by a large number of people. With beautiful women walking along the red carpet in their red chiffon that cost them thousands of dollars and average people walking around in denim jeans bargaining for their outfits where does the line of fashion get drawn? Women and men go to Wal-Mart, Target, TJ Maxx, JC Penny, etc to get good deals on pants, shirts, suits, and dresses that are in for the season but not available financially. When stars have seen their outfits hit the shelves of discount stores they move on to something more expensive, desirable, and unnecessary. Denim jeans used to be worn by hard laboring workers and then moved on to being worn by the stars of Hollywood. But, if an average person wore an outfit worn by a star they’d move on to finding something new. Where does the line get drawn between frivolous and necessary? As times have changed women and men’s clothes have changed pushing the envelope of what is appropriate and what is just flat out provocative. Before MTV and other scandalous television shows became popular women and men dressed to impress and covered their skin to be taken seriously in their career and towards their peers. With fashion of bonnets, three piece suits, and full length dresses this was the style to wear all around the world where everyone had respect and beauty. Now as time has went on and more and more media showing that it’s okay to dress scandalous you notice the less clothing a women is wearing or tighter clothing a man wear shows sex appeal. Bikinis transformed from one piece suits, apple bottom jeans from Capri shorts, and tube tops from normal tank tops. The only way to predict the new fashion in the future is to take off more and more clothing and inches. As much as society finds these fashions appalling to the younger generations we all take part to show society we are hip and in the in crowd. The fashion industry has been shown in television shows and movies to be a cut throat industry trying to be on top with the latest trends. Designers going all around the world studying clothing and culture to predict what will be sold on the shelves of Coach and Calvin Klein. High school children and even in the work force we look to impress and show others our social rank, financials, and sex appeal. “Say Yes to the Dress” and other makeover shows teach society what others want us to be seen in even if its altering out ideas of what our ideal wedding would have been. I can honestly say even in my room I have pin ups of models that wear skimpy outfits showing what women should be wearing now. Fads come and go quicker than fashions in the sense that accessories, purses, games, etc are popular and in no time are replaced with something to catch our attention. Pokemon games were very popular in the 90s with their video games, pokemon cards, and television series. As they grew to be less popular another card, television, and game series known as Yu-Gi-Oh came out and swept pokemon under the rug. Silly Bands were a popular bracelet that morphed into an animal, form of nature, or person creating a trend that covered the towns of Torrington, Winsted, even Litchfield and elsewhere. These silly creations were popular for few months until lower budget stores made their own version and tried to compete with the famous toys. Fads last from a few weeks to a few months and very rarely a few years, fashions however tend to stay around until someone else creates something to capture the world’s attention. Sadly, we all conform to fashions and fads of the world waiting for something new and exciting to come along to capture our attention all over again. We as a society are all guilty of this and most likely there will be no change in this behavior. To be socially accepted is a major goal of each and everyone hoping that people will see how much money, time, and effort we spend trying to impress our peers. We can all just sit back and wait for the next trending topic to come alone and move us forward. Even in social communication it went from cell-phones, to texting, to Facebook, and now Twitter is the newest craze. However, fashion has been shown to be more cutthroat and moving a lot fast than other trends in this day and age.
