How Does Wiesel Present Eliezer's Relationship In Night

...In the memoir, "Night", by Eliezer Wiesel, Elie's relationship with other characters is explored. These relationships which are critically centralized within the text play an essential part in the characterisation of the protagonist Elie. One such relationship is that between Elie and his father, which helps in the characterisation of Elie . Another ongoing relationship explored within the text is between Elie and God, which is essential in the further characterization of Elie. Elie's relationship with himself is seen to be centralized in the memoir. Elie's relationship with his father is a critically explored central point in the text because it plays a key role in Elie's character development as it displays Elie's growing selfishness and lack of care toward his father. Elie Wiesel's Loss Of Hope

...In a beautiful villanelle dedicated to his father, Thomas told him: “do not go gentle into that good night,” but to “rage, rage against the dying of the light” (Thomas, 1 and 3). Thomas hoped that his father would find the strength to not give up in his fight for life. Their familial love gave his father the hope to do the seemingly impossible and defy death, for a little longer. Hope is key to surviving in any situation, but it takes a lot of emotional strength to maintain. During the Holocaust, this was truer than ever for millions of people, who faced death every day, and were tortured, starved, and violated. Their hope in religion, the goodness of humanity, and themselves were continually tested and most victims’ hope were eventually lost because of their suffering. One survivor, Elie Wiesel, wrote a memoir, Night, sharing his experiences during the Holocaust and in a concentration camp, and solemnly displaying his progression of hope. Elie's gradual loss of hope caused him to lose the emotional strength that he needs to survive, which made him desperate to cling on to the familial identity that was...

Night Father Son Relationship Essay

...In the book, Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie and his father go through major relationship changes throughout the book and it is interesting to watch the evolution of a father-son relationship like this. Elie and his father live in a town called, Sighet, they live in a Jewish community and are jews themselves. They have a person in the community named, Moshe the Beadle, he is taken away for a bit and when he returns he tells a story of how he and other people were taken out to a ditch and everyone was shot and killed, he escaped. Nobody believes such a thing is possible, until the Hungary police and nazis come in and put them in ghettos, small walled off communities. Then they are sent to the camp. The first time Elie and his father’s relationship is shown, they are distant. His father cares more about the community than his own family. Elie and his father don’t really talk much at all and have no sign of any good relationship there. Elie said, “My father was occupied with his business and the doings of the community” (Wiesel 5). His father has all his time occupied by everything but his family. Elie at this point is devoted to his religion and constantly is studying on it and learning more through a book called the “Cabbala”. It is a higher learning of their religion. Elie and his father’s relationship is getting better, but only due to them being forced to be together in the...

Comparing Night And Joshua's Life

Father Son Relationships In Night

...In the memoir, Night, by Elie Wiesel, the reader discovers the bond that Elie has with his father, Schlomo, during the Holocaust. Having each other during the Holocaust, they can protect each other mentally, physically and emotionally. Father-son relationships are a strong bond, and experiencing such painful situations together can strengthen the connection. Elie and his father’s relationship changes immensely, as we see the difference in their relationship from before the camp, in the camp and when Schlomo grew weak. Schlomo raised Elie, and shaped who he was as a Jewish man, with integrity and respect. Schlomo was a positive man, who always gave people reason and hope. Their life before the camp was normal; and the family was loving and supportive to one another. However, Elie believed that his father cared more about the townspeople than his own family. “…Was more involved with the welfare of others than with his own kin” (Wiesel 27). Although Schlomo was a strong father figure, he was a very busy man, and the people in the town of Sighet needed him as well. Disagreements between the Elie and Schlomo lead to an early clash of power. When Schlomo denied Elie’s request to learn and be more...

Father Son Relationships In Eliezer Wiesel's Night

...In Eliezer Wiesel’s Night, he focuses on father and son relationships. In the beginning Elie and his father did not have a very strong relationship. “my father was a cultured man, rather unsentimental. He rarely displayed his feelings, not even within his family, and was more involved with the welfare of others than his own kin”, Elie says. His father was not a man of emotion and treated Elie as if he was a spoiled rotten kid. Wiesel details father-son relationships to show how natural, loving bonds deteriorate when individuals are faced with intolerable situations. For example, a prisoner murders his father for a taste of bread, demonstrating the breakdown of humanity. The prisoner then ends up getting jumped and is also killed. Another...

Elie is a 13-year-old Jewish boy living in Sighet, Transylvania. "By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple" (20). Jaclson Trial

...beliefs. Elie Wiesel in his novel Night, a novel about Wiesel’s life during Holocaust, displayed many of these bonds. Wiesel documented people’s bonds with their Jewish faith to stay alive for the majority of those who suffered through the holocaust were Jews. He told of bonds to oneself to stay alive although quite selfish. Finally, Wiesel utilized the close relationships between family members to argue that family bonds give individuals a reason to live. Wiesel first proves that family bonds help individuals survive by showing the father son relationship between Elie’s father and himself. This is seen throughout the entire novel. It is seen when they reassure each other that Elie’s mom and Tzipora, his sister, will be alright as they are separated. They are being sent to certain death but Elie and his father try and comfort each other so that they do not breakdown and basically die at the loss of their family members. Another instance of the family bond saving one of their lives is when they were on the train cars going to Buchenwald. The Nazi’s had just shouted to drop all the dead into the snow. Two men came to take Elie’s father for he looked dead, but Elie saved him saying “’No’ I cried ‘he isn’t dead! Not yet!’… He was breathing weakly. ‘You see…’” (Wiesel 94). This clearly shows that because of Elie’s family bond with his father made him save his father’s life by shouting to the two men to leave his dad. A final instance of the connection between Elie and his...

Reflection On Night By Elie Wiesel

...This is similar to the relationship between Elie Wiesel, his father and God. At first, Elie built a barrier between him and his father because he felt that his father did not care for their family as much as he cared for others: Eliezer, devoted to his religion, is not close with his father because he refuses that Elie read the Kabbalah, a religious text. After he and his father are separated from the rest of his family, Elie realizes that they are going to have to depend on each other to survive the Holocaust. Throughout Night, Elie grows closer to his father, whilst...

...power. A perfect example of the latter would be the Holocaust where humans tortured and killed other humans because they were different. In Eliezier Wiesel’s memoir, Night he describes the extreme cruelty and suffering he endures in Auschwitz and other concentration camps as a child inmate during the Holocaust. Wiesel can neither explain nor understand the reasons for human cruelty that he witnesses and endures during the Holocaust, but learns that cruelty breeds more of the same and in the end survival and self-preservation is all that matters.
