Problem’s with my job!

The problem we are currently having is that we work in the receiving department, and we have a conveyor system. The way it works is that the product is received in on one end, and then it is shipped across to us by the conveyor system. This is problematic because the person(s) loading the belt on the other end refuse to wrap the product. The system twists and turns and comes up a shaky elevator and across another conveyor, and by the time the product gets to us it is leaning and sometimes product is falling or has fallen off the pallet. This makes the job harder and we like to consider ourselves quality employees, so this disturbs the employees that are responsible for taking product off the belt without damaging it. The belief is that if the product is received right it can be stored and thus shipped right, this includes damage as well. So if you receive it damaged of course you are going to have damaged product to ship. If the product is pulled from the pallet before it is received it doesn’t get charged to the company it is charged back to the shipper, so if the process starts right then you have less damages. Order selectors don’t pick damaged product, so it gets picked over and the employee’s that stock the pick location have to take it out and put it in a damaged product location. We have said something just recently in a meeting and it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Nobody wants to take responsibility for the wrapping of the product. We believe that it should be part of the procedure for either the person(s) breaking down the load or the person loading the belt to wrap at least the top two layers before putting the pallet on the belt. To their defense they feel as though they don’t have enough time to do this because of all the product they have to breakdown, and the lift operators say the same for all the product they have to move. The solution may be to either hire someone to wrap the product or designate a person that we have already to do this but a solution is definitely needed before there is a major loss of product or an employee! We believe that the problem should be fixed to stop product from being lost or damaged as to stop the company from losing money and causing problems with inventory. This should be fixed to stop someone from getting injured trying to save a pallet and or some product from falling down the elevator, or trying to straighten a pallet at the end of the belt to keep it from falling off as to not have to stack the product again and doing double work. Some of the employees are big advocates of safety and believe that the company isn’t a very safety conscious company which to the safety conscious employees is a problem. Statistics indicate that certain areas or operations within a warehouse present greater hazards than others. The following operations have historically contributed to significant numbers of injuries and are considered to be the most hazardous: docks, powered industrial trucks, conveyors, materials storage, and manual lifting/handling and charging stations. People who are safety conscious believe that this problem should be fixed because they don’t want to be blamed or charged with damaging some product because our company carries some small product that are very expensive and when the company first introduced us to the process it was policy to fire someone for product falling down the conveyor, somewhere along the way this policy has gone by the wayside. Truly safe warehouses are always the ones where the managers and supervisors provide a high level of safety support, engagement and enthusiasm. Even if managers can’t be at every safety committee function, their leadership sets the tone for how productive and proactive their site’s safety initiatives will be. There should be some type of compromise between the different departments as to keep from causing the company money and product. If some type of agreement or change in the process isn’t made the company may see itself listed in one of these safety articles and being charged by OSHA and sued by an employee’s family for a severe injury or death of someone for something that could have been prevented by simply wrapping the top of a pallet.
