MOLD CASTINGS
Mold casting application is a regular practice in the industry. Casting holds lubricant and enhances the mold life. The IHTC is naturally affected by the coating Alumina, fireclay, graphite are used as coatings. Hamsaid etal evaluated the influence of coating thickness and composition on IHTC which was found to be decrease by 50% as coating thickness increased by 50 to 100 micron miter. Griffith and Kawai showed that the effect of coating thickness varied of the pressure on the metal. Nyuyen etal studied Al-si alloy and reported that an inverse logarithmic relationship between coating thickness and IHTC. Griffith (p-61-vol3-1999) prepared the chill roughness using different grade SiC papers to obtain reproducible surface finish and measured the surface parameter of chill and casting surface using surtronic-200 surface profile meter. And found out that casting surface was not plane but convex towards the chill. Prabhu etal (105-vol 3 2004) showed that the maximum heat flow was higher for textured surface than for smoother ones. Sahin etal (p-11-vol3-2006) concluded that the IHTC was affected by chill and roughness. Griffith etal (163-vol3-2001) referred to the papers of moujekwa etal Assar which showed that a decrease in IHTC with increasing chill surface roughness although the decrease is still small compared to increase in chill roughness and is not yet explained. He further observed that surface roughness of the casting was greater than that of chill especially in the case of solidification upwards but less with solidification downwards the surface roughness of the casting solidified upwards decreased with increasing chill surface roughness. No significant relationship was found out between casting surface curvature and the casting surface were not the replica of the chill surface against which they solidified as has been generally supposed but the opposite in that the peaks of chill surface roughness were associated with peaks of casting surface roughness peaks.
