Finnis, on the other hand, took a conservative approach. He claims that personhood happens at the time of fertilization, and at that point should have the same moral status as a fully developed person. A fetus is continuously developing; therefore, there is no point where one can say that a fetus is not a person at a specific point, or that a fetus is a person at a specific point. In Finnis opinion, a zygote or a fetus at the time of conception “has the capacity within its genetic structure for supporting specifically human functions: self-consciousness, rationality and choice.” (from class notes provided) In consonance to that “active potentiality” (Finnis 22), though immature, the fetus is not only a potential person but an actual person.
