Introduction

McCrimmon introduces a new form leadership in which it is designed to enhance a person’s success called “Thought Leadership.” Thought leadership can be defined as one that can enable someone to think differently. He argues how much more differently thought leadership differs from distributed leadership and shared leadership. Goleman argues the science behind the human using emotional intelligence in everyday life. In the beginning Goleman writes he was enjoying an evening with his wife and describing the scenic route as they were driving home in the wet weather conditions and noticed someone begging for money that happens to be missing both of their legs. With kindness he gave the person five dollars and as he drove away it happened to blow away into the street. As he was driving away, another car which happened to be behind him stopped and picked up the money and gave it back to the person in the wheelchair. After reading his article he recognizes that the person who stopped is a leader who recognized a problem and used his emotions to solve the problem. He talks about the human emotions. He talks about the limbic system; which has a key assembly the “Amygdala” is placed around the brain holds that grasps the humans’ emotional memories. The Amygdala serves as a transmitter to the Thalamus which processes the sensory information in your brain. In his argument he references the dimensions of human emotion which can be used for a specific capability of leadership. There is a difference between rational and emotional intelligence of leaders. Studies have proven that in most cases majority of the leadership positions require high IQ’s and intelligence which can also be known to some as “book smarts.” The things that these positions don’t require and/or lack are self-awareness, managing emotions, motivating others showing empathy and staying connected. Self-awareness is where your mind is telling you to do one thing but your gut feeling is telling you to do another, something identical to a conscience. Growing up everyone is faced with choices but you have to know what the smarter choice is. While in college obtaining my undergraduate degree I registered under criminal justice knowing that’s not what I wanted to do but I knew I had to enroll to start a career in that field. As time moved on into my junior year in college I finally went with my gut feeling of majoring in what I wanted to do and stopped listening to others. Managing your emotions is the ability to manage your emotions when certain situations arise. Throughout life you face some difficult times where situations make you angry, upset, and sad or have anxiety. When certain situations surface, in some cases you won’t like some of them but you have to be able to have self-control and not let your feelings get the best of you. Motivating others is always great. Everyone has emotions. And depending on what those situations are they are drive us to react to those emotions. Goleman reasoned that Pessimist signifies themselves that can’t overcome their circumstances and Optimist are those who has a setback as in which they can still change. At times I can be both. When I get overwhelmed with situations and it causes me to lose concentration. Showing empathy tends to show in body language or voice tone rather than in just words. If one cannot cope with the problem of one being non -sympathetic it will become a problem. Everyone has their days where things are bothering them and others have days when they’re really happy. Staying connected. Staying connected to other situations other than yours can be very good. This mainly requires you to listen to others and comprehend with what one tells you especially a close friend or relative. You always have to clench the attention of others and demand the respect when you’re speaking. This gives off good vibes in which others can relate. But if you’re in a nasty mood and you tend to snap on people that can make the atmosphere change to something toxic.

McCrimmon studies the difference between a much more contemporary leadership and a more traditional leadership that people use today. The concept of thought leadership and the differences between it and positional leadership is grasped when reading this article. McCrimmon argues that Thought Leadership relies solely on ideas that are to enable someone to alter the way in which a person thinks. He describes distributed leadership as one who is acceptable to working with others to undergo each other’s input. Shared leadership is described as leadership that happens when a group of people participate in leading. He uses studies to support his method of thought leadership. He insures that this method of leadership betters others and gives people a reason to take the lead rather than to go behind someone else. The article explicates how it can spark opposition allowing for many comparable outcomes. It goes against the norm and offers imagination to what is considered the wrong or right ways of doing things. Thought Leadership is not managing others but it is shown to peers, family members coworkers etc. With thought leadership it does not take a group of people to achieve a greater outcome. He confirms that it can be shown by anyone who is not a ranking employee; it is someone who takes the initiative to do something. In his article it states that it merely depends on technical rather than taking it personal because it may change in which it could cause fundamental values.

From grasping the point from both Goleman and McCrimmon, I found that “The Emotional Intelligence of Leaders” was more intriguing to read and more relatable. He teaches us of the Limbic system and how our emotions stem from using different cortexes in the brain. After further reading, his studies prove to be those who are more laid back, self-motivated and the positive energy feeds off them onto others. They both give strong viewpoints regarding leadership but one thinks more with emotion and the other is more so with thought. I morally relate to Goleman because the five dimensions of emotional thinking effects the human race in different ways. The emotional intelligence is being applied to everyday life and while some may not see it that way, I included. Goleman’s article was more considerable because it may make you think and wonder. However after taking initiative of using the Ulrich Global Serial Directory I have come to the conclusion that McCrimmon’s article is scholarly. He gives great meticulous material. The author and the audience clearly noted in his article. At some point in a person’s life you would experience Shared leadership, thought leadership and distributed leadership but in some circumstances shared and distributed is beyond our control. The style of writing he chose also hints to me that he chose a more formal writing to gain and keep the attention of his readers. He uses and notes his sources he used to conduct his hypothesis of thought leadership. In conclusion of reading the two it feels more natural that I would find McCrimmon’s article in textbook and Goleman’s in a daily magazine. Goleman’s take on emotional intelligence was informational but it was lacking some detail compared to McCrimmon’s. I would rather gain and look for more information on thought leadership because he gained more of my attention when reading. Because reading and gaining information between both articles I hope to gain better aspect of both Thought Leadership and Emotional Intelligence in likes that I can pass on the informative information that I have learned.

...My life’s direction and purpose has not always been clear, but more of a muddled path with multiple turns, bumps, and progress along the way. Pursuing higher education and continuously developing new skill sets have always been personal objectives for me. I have learned through my life lessons the basic value of self-improvement. An MBA would enhance my capability to independently assess multiple situations, develop a rational plan and execute the plan. Obtaining an MBA will present new opportunities for me to figure out where I want to work and study. My success in life will be enhanced when I complete an MBA and pursue a new professional career path. As an undergraduate student, I majored in biochemistry. I believed having a scientific background would give me the skill set to lead me wherever I wanted to go in life. However, by the time I entered my junior year I was in serious doubt regarding my degree decision and my passion for biochemistry. After discussing my options with my parents, we came to an agreement that I would finish my degree because it would give me a solid foundation with a technical education. The biochemistry curriculum exposes participants to high levels of proficiency in math, logic, and problem solving. Additionally, the curriculum promotes the development to work independently and think creatively about potential solutions. I finished my degree but continued to feel very sceptical about pursuing higher education because I wanted to make sure I chose...

...look forward to building and expanding my critical thinking skills. I’m a new grad and am loving my position but sometimes it frustrates me when I ask my fellow nurses at work about one of my patients and they give me an idea. I get frustrated because usually a “light bulb” goes off in my head and I’m like “that makes perfect sense, why didn’t I think of that”. Like it all comes together. I know it will take time and that is what my other nurses are there for, I just don’t like being the novice, in my previous job I was usually the person doing the training or the person who people went to for solutions or ideas. I also look forward to the all of the doors that will open once I receive this degree. This is one of the best things about being a nurse, the opportunities are endless! One of my greatest fears was pursuing my bachelor’s (actually it started with the beginning when I first enrolled for nursing school) is if I’m smart enough, can I handle it? I always struggled through high school barely graduating but I did it with support of teachers. I do feel that if I can get through nursing school and will get through this program, but I can still feel that fear in the back of my head screaming for some attention. While I was completing my prerequisites for the nursing program I held off on one class and when I finally had no choice, I enrolled in ENG 102. I definitely have a fear of writing papers, my stomach turns, my hands get clammy just thinking about (my parents think...

...Hall with me after class, Benny, a sophomore in one of my international relations courses, asked for, and received, some pointers on the required paper. “You’ve just told me to write exactly as I’ve been taught not to write,” said he. “And who, pray tell, taught you?” asked I. He gave an over-the-shouldernod across the street, toward Ellen Reed House--the English Department. "Hmmm. . . fine--I'mnot surprised to hear they tell you something different,” I told him. “The English profs teach you to write in a generic way, say, fiction, or generically expository stuff. I want you to write a social science paper.” With some ”Hmmm-ing” of his own, Benny shuffled off, wearing a mildly annoyed and not altogether convinced frown. How dare they teach different ways to write in different departments at the same college! Benny did make an effort to heed my suggestions, but it took persistence. For example, the introduction to his first draft, included a vague Writing Across the Curriculum, Vol. 11, August 1990 35 36 Writing Across The Curriculum (August 1990) statement like: ”Conflict between Arabs and Black Africans in the Sudan is a serious problem and should be examined in greater detail. . . including its history, causes, and future.” The purpose statement I eventually settled for read more like this: ”This paper will examine social, economic, and political aspects of the Sudanese civil war. The geography and history of the conflict will be briefly reviewed...

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...
