Healthy Habits and Vices

...Students' Health Habits Tied to School Success SATURDAY, Feb. 22, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and being physically fit are important for students' success in school, a new study suggests. When students' home and school environments support their physical health and well-being, they perform better academically, the researchers found, so programs in and out of the classroom to promote healthy behavior may be a smart investment. The study looked at survey results and district test scores of 940 fifth- and sixth-grade students attending 12 randomly selected schools in New Haven, Conn., a poor and ethnically diverse city. Researchers also assessed the students' physical fitness three to six months before they were tested and again after the scores of the standardized tests were released. Students with environments that supported their physical health were more likely to reach their target scores in reading, writing and math. They were more than twice as likely to achieve this academic success than students whose environments supported their health the least, the investigators found. However, the study did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship. The study, published online recently in the Journal of School Health, revealed health factors that were linked to improved test scores in the children, including the following: • Not having a television in the bedroom • Maintaining a healthy weight • Being physically fit • Having access...

People Like Us David Brooks Analysis

...Humans are creatures of habit and, more often than not, it’s hard – if not impossible – to change or completely destroy these habits. Sometimes these habits are physical actions and sometimes they are things that have been ingrained in a person’s mental state through socialization. In his article “People Like Us,” David Brooks explores the idea of the human habit of gravitating to like-minded people through the concept of diversity. Brooks uses the examples of both racial diversity in neighborhoods and political diversity in the academic field (n. pag.). In the very first paragraph of the article Brooks describes his idea of a diverse neighborhood and at the end, he implores the American public to make an attempt at increasing the diversity of their institutions and communities (n. pag.). However, in doing so, he implies that it is possible to have a “truly diverse neighborhood” despite having said previously that he has “never seen nor heard of that neighborhood” (Brooks n. pag.). He has not seen that neighborhood because it does not exist and, as long...

The Power of Habit

...and finish our conversations gracefully. And there are dozens and dozens more behaviors that are just as complicated, if not more so. How on Earth do we get all of this done? That's where habits come in. Habits help us through our day. When we are doing something that is habitual, we are not engaged in the task in the same way as when we are doing something that is not habitual. Just as an example, consider making breakfast in your own kitchen on any given weekday. Next time you do it, watch how effortlessly it happens. It's not exactly like an out-of-body experience, but it's close. Your movements through the kitchen are stereotyped. You grab the milk out of the fridge, turn toward the counter and give the door that little nudge you with your foot that you know it needs. If something is on your mind, you might not notice that you're sitting at the table and munching on your second piece of toast until you're halfway through it. Now, compare that to getting breakfast at a friend's house. Maybe you're dog sitting (you're so nice!) Where's the milk? The bread? Oh my goodness, so complicated! That's the power of a habit. And you don't have just one. You don't even have a dozen. You have dozens, maybe even hundreds. Thank goodness for habits! But, here's the catch: You don't like all of your habits. In fact, some of them...
