The Quarrel by Maxine Kumin

Said a lightning bug to a firefly,
"Look at the lightning bugs fly by!"
"Silly dunce!" said the fly. "What bug ever flew?
Those are fireflies. And so are you."
"Bug!" cried the bug. "Fly!" cried the fly.
"Wait!" said a glowworm happening by. "I'm a worm," squirmed the worm. "I glimmer all night.
You are worms, both of you. I know that I'm right." "Fly!" cried the fly. "Worm!" cried the worm.
"Bug!" cried the bug. "I'm standing firm!" Back and forth through the dark each shouted his word
Till their quarrel awakened the early bird. "You three noisy things, you are all related,"
She said to the worm, and promptly ate it. With a snap of her bill she finished the fly,
And the lightning bug was the last to die. All glowers and glimmerers, there's a MORAL:
Shine if you must, but do not quarrel.

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

THE TYGER (from Songs Of Experience) by William Blake
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art.
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Dentist and the Crocodile by Roald Dahl by Roald Dahl

The crocodile, with cunning smile, sat in the dentist's chair.
He said, "Right here and everywhere my teeth require repair."
The dentist's face was turning white. He quivered, quaked and shook.
He muttered, "I suppose I'm going to have to take a look.""I want you," Crocodile declared, "to do the back ones first.
The molars at the very back are easily the worst."
He opened wide his massive jaws. It was a fearsome sight––
At least three hundred pointed teeth, all sharp and shining white.
The dentist kept himself well clear. He stood two yards away.
He chose the longest probe he had to search out the decay.
"I said to do the back ones first!" the Crocodile called out.
"You're much too far away, dear sir, to see what you're about.
To do the back ones properly you've got to put your head
Deep down inside my great big mouth," the grinning Crocky said.
The poor old dentist wrung his hands and, weeping in despair,
He cried, "No no! I see them all extremely well from here!"
Just then, in burst a lady, in her hands a golden chain.
She cried, "Oh Croc, you naughty boy, you're playing tricks again!"
"Watch out!" the dentist shrieked and started climbing up the wall.
"He's after me! He's after you! He's going to eat us all!"
"Don't be a twit," the lady said, and flashed a gorgeous smile.
"He's harmless. He's my little pet, my lovely crocodile."
Friends
by Abbie Farwell Brown

How good to lie a little while
And look up through the tree!
The Sky is like a kind big smile
Bent sweetly over me.

The Sunshine flickers through the lace
Of leaves above my head,
And kisses me upon the face
Like Mother, before bed.

The Wind comes stealing o'er the grass
To whisper pretty things;
And though I cannot see him pass,
I feel his careful wings.

So many gentle Friends are near
Whom one can scarcely see,
A child should never feel a fear,
Wherever he may be.

Little things by Julia Fletcher Carney

Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land.
Thus the little minutes,
Humble though they be,
Make the mighty ages
Of eternity.
So our little errors
Lead the soul away
From the path of virtue
Far in sin to stray.
Little deeds of kindness,
Little words of love,
Help to make earth happy
Like the heaven above.

The Mountain and the Squirrel by Ralph Waldo Emerson
The mountain and the squirrel
Had a quarrel,
And the former called the latter
"Little prig."
Bun replied,
"You are doubtless very big;
But all sorts of things and weather
Must be taken in together
To make up a year
And a sphere.
And I think it no disgrace
To occupy my place.
If I'm not so large as you,
You are not so small as I,
And not half so spry:
I'll not deny you make
A very pretty squirrel track.
Talents differ; all is well and wisely put;
If I cannot carry forests on my back,
Neither can you crack a nut."

The Ants by Jane Taylor
A little black ant found a large grain of wheat
Too heavy to lift or to roll;
So he begg'd of a neighbour he happen'd to meet,
To help it down into his hole.
"I've got my own work to look after," said he;
"You must shift for yourself, if you please;"
So he crawl'd off as selfish and cross as could be,
And lay down to sleep at his ease.
Just then a black brother was passing the road,
And seeing his brother in want,
Came up and assisted him in with his load,
For he was a good-natured ant.
Let all who this story may happen to hear,
Endeavour to profit by it;
For often it happens that children appear
As cross as the ant, every bit.
And the good natured ant who assisted his brother
May teach those who choose to be taught,
That if little insects are kind to each other,
Then children most certainly ought.

Try Again by Anonymous
T is a lesson you should heed,
Try, try again;
If at first you don't succeed,
Try, try again;
Then your courage should appear,
For, if you will persevere,
You will conquer, never fear;
Try, try again.
Once or twice though you should fail,
Try, try again;
If you would at last prevail,
Try, try again;
If we strive, 'tis no disgrace
Though we do not win the race;
What should you do in the case?
Try, try again.
If you find your task is hard,
Try, try again;
Time will bring you your reward,
Try, try again.
All that other folks can do,
Why, with patience, should not you?
Only keep this rule in view:
Try, try again.

Lend Me Your Heart oh Child by Funom Makama Worth and numbers rarely go hand in hand. Producing seeds which will rot and be eaten by the locust makes barrenness a special kind of blessing. So pay attention and lend me your mind oh child b'cos from it comes the brush to which your life is coloured. Rights enable you claim your hat responsibilities show you when and how to wear it. Manifestation of your works beyond the comprehension of your mates exalts the power of your mind but constant announcement of your own achievements makes you the promoter of their doubts to crown you a liar. Vehicles driven by words are no match for the ones handled by deeds. Let not your free will be cajoled grudges in a hidden corner after the exhibition of charity blows out your light with an awful breath. A non doer and an adamant “no” giver still possess some honour when compared to a chronic complainer. Reputation decorates the corner of an uptight man but it is slavery when one lives on too many principles. A good life is one moving on the chariots of freedom and freedom is running a lifestyle both within and outside without much notice. Habits are great managers to conscience’s liquor stores and character intoxication is closest to the point of irreversibility. A greedy mind is a warehouse run by waste with no room for left overs. A tight fisted hand is self limiting, reducing its surface area to receive. A mind without courtesy to its environs, spinning the world around its own orbit breeds selfishness. Corruption builds thorns around the heart and makes the soul a direct relation to insanity. If false words were grapes, water would be tastier than wine. Exaggeration adds a tail to the bird and makes the dog an Amphibian. But love gives poisons no ground to strive satisfaction without it is the existence of a Leopard in an Elephant’s skin. The gardens of space filled with little rainbows cannot outshine its colours; staying as the only ingredient necessary for the preservation of humanity. When your mind is at peace with itself, then is the Joy of my inheritance to you completely whole.

Seed Certification for Horticultural Crops: Present Policy and Future Needs

...Seed certification for horticultural crops: Present policy and future needs Introduction Seed is the basic input for agricultural crop production and the effectiveness of other inputs like fertilizer, irrigation etc. depends on seed quality. The production can be increased to about 20% using quality seed itself. Horticulture crops are playing significant role in nutritional improvement, food and financial security of the people of Bangladesh. In the recent years, the country has attained self sufficiency in cereal crops. But production of horticultural crops like vegetables, spices and fruits is much below the required quantity. The area and production of vegetables and spices are shown in Fig. 1 & 2 and Table 1. Seed certification is a legally sanctioned system of quality control of seeds to be placed for sale. It is the process designed to maintain and make available to the general public continuous supply of high quality seeds and propagating materials of crops to ensure the genetic, physical, physiological and health status. Seed Certification Agency is the only authorized body for certification and quality monitoring of seeds of any kinds or varieties. In Bangladesh existing legislations for quality control of seeds are: a) the Seeds Ordinance, 1977 b) the Seeds (Amendment) Act, 1997 c) the Seeds (Amendment) Act, 2005 d) the Seed Rules, 1998 e) the Nursery Guidelines, 2008 and f) decisions from the National Seed Board (NSB). Horniman Horticulture

...Case #9: HORNIMAN HORTICULTURE Synopsis and Objectives This case captures the problems concerning cash flow and working-capital management typical of small, growing businesses. At the end of 2005, Bob and Maggie Brown have completed their third year of operating Horniman Horticulture, a $1-million-revenue woody-shrub nursery in central Virginia. While experiencing booming demand and improving margins, the Browns are puzzled by their plummeting cash balance. The case highlights the difference between cash flow and accounting profits, as well as the common negative effects of growth on cash flow. It also provides a forum for instilling appreciation for the relevance of free cash flow to business owners and managers, introducing financial-ratio analysis, developing the concept of the cash cycle and working-capital management, and motivating the use of financial models. Questions 1. What is your assessment of the financial performance of Horniman Horticulture? 2. Do you agree with Maggie Brown’s accounts-payable policy? 3. What explains the erosion of the cash balance? 4. What do you expect the financial position of the business to be in 2006? Extend the financial statements through 2006, assuming that Bob Brown grows revenue by 30%. Note: To make the balance sheet balance, define cash as equal to (Curr. liab. + Net worth) – (Accounts receivable + Inventory + OCA + Net fixed assets). What are the alternatives for solving the business’s cash problem? The free-cash-flow calculation...

Horniman Horticulture

...Horniman Horticulture Overview Horniman Horticulture is a whole-sale nursery that has seen tremendous growth throughout the years. The nursery, which consists of shrubs, annuals, perennials, and trees, has increased by more than forty percent in just two years. With 52 greenhouses and 40 acres of field, business was growing for the Browns. The nursery saw an increase in the profit margins of 2.7% within the past two years. As 2006 seemed to be a favorable year for the Browns and their nursery, they continued to remain hopeful in the growth of their business. The Browns are concerned that future cash flows will not be sufficient in order to provide a sustainable growth. The firm’s cash levels fell under $10,000 which led to a serious concern for the business and its desired operating target of 8% of annual revenue. Maggie’s concern with the idea of becoming leveraged by debt is the possibility that the nursery will not generate enough profit to pay off the bank loans and interest. As a result, her strategy is to use the firm’s cash to pay off all inventory demand. Even with the decline in cash flow, Bob is optimistic that in 2006 their nursery will achieve a 30% growth rate. Based on 2005, revenue and operating profits were 15% ahead of 2004. It is probable that a 30% growth rate can be obtained within the upcoming year of 2006. Maggie seems to be well aware of the risks involved if she were to let the company walk down the path to becoming leveraged by...

Horniman Horticulture

...Bob and Maggie Brown bought Horniman Horticulture, a family-owned business, from Maggie’s parents in 2002 for $999,000. Bob runs the nursery’s operations and Maggie oversees the company’s finances. Contributing to the success, Bob had grew the number of plant species grown at the nursery by more than 40%. Their profit margin had increased to an expected 5.8% in 2005, and Bob was confident with the success the local economy was experiencing that a high demand would keep his business booming. Because much of his inventory took two to five years to reach maturity, his expansion efforts had been in the works for a while by 2005. He was optimistic that 2006 would be a banner year, expecting a 30% revenue growth rate. In addition, ensuring their long-term growth opportunities, he and Maggie were hoping to expand their business by closing on a neighboring 12-acre piece of farmland at the end of 2005. Problem: Although their profits were growing rapidly over their first few years, contrarily, the cash on hand has been decreasing to a point where it was less than their target level of 8% of annual revenue in 2005. What they ended up with was a liquidity problem, because most of their cash is tied up in inventory and accounts receivable. It seems apparent, too, that the unsustainable growth rate is realized as the cause for their depleting cash balance. Their impressive growth is attributed to their heavy asset investment in growing the size of their nursery, yet it has brought the firm’s...

Horniman Horticulture

...Company Analysis Strengths Revenue is up - Horniman’s strongest success indicator is its continued revenue growth over the past four years. This advantage becomes even more relevant when the company’s annual revenue growth – ranging from 2.9% in 2002 to 15.5% in 2005 – is compared to the industry benchmark of a 1.8% annual loss. This means that Horniman, unlike its competitors who have been posting a loss during the same period, has been able to reap robust economic benefits. In a nut shell, the company is booming while its rivals are shrinking. Efficiency and Productivity are up - Another good feature of the company is its ability to control the cost of goods sold over the years from spiraling upwards. Revenues from 2002 to 2005 grew 33% and Cost of goods sold grew 25%. The firm has been able increases its sales at a higher rate than the increase in expenses. This means that the firm is getting more efficient with its processes since the gap between sales and costs of goods sold is increasing. This is a sign of healthy business operations. Further, Horniman’s net profit has nearly doubled between 2002 and 2005 – soaring to $60,800 in 2005 from $32,600 in 2002. Profits are on the rise - Horniman’s gross profit has increased steadily, jumping from $385,600 in 2002 to $545,400 in 2005. Also because of efficiency, not only is Horniman producing more and selling more, it is able to capture larger margins. Profit margin for Horniman increased from 4.1% to...

Air Layering

...INSTRUCTIONAL SHEET FOR STUDENTS PROPAGATION BY AIR-LAYERING OBJECTIVES Students should be able to: ❖ Demonstrated the steps involved in Air-layering propagation. ❖ Explain the reason for using rooting hormone and scraping of cambium layer on stem. NOTES PROPAGATION BY AIR LAYERING Air layering or marcotting is a form of asexual plant propagation. This is a form of propagation that involves the use of plant parts, other than seeds to produce new plants. The process of Air-layering involves a system whereby new plants are formed on a stem while still being attached to the parent plant. SAFETY WARNING 1. Care should be taken when using the budding knife so as not to cause injury to oneself or others. 2. Gloves should be worn at all times to insure that rooting hormone does not come into contact with skin. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1. Plants to layer 2. Rooting hormone 3. Secateurs 4. Sharp sterilized budding knife 5. Damp cocoa moss 6. Clear plastic wrap 7. String 8. Brush 9. Latex gloves. STEP INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF AIR-LAYERING 1. Select a branch from a healthy plant. Stems of pencil size thickness or larger are best and remove any leaves that are present. 2. Horniman Horticulture

...In the case we are given the information that revenues are expected to increase by 30% and are asked to develop a forecast of the financial statements for 2006. I used this information to forecast out the revenues and all of the accounts for my balance sheet as well. For COGS and SG&A I used an average percentage, developed from the last four years data, of each divided by revenue. Depreciation was given in the footnotes on page 3 and for taxes I once again used an average of the tax for each year divided by operating profit for the 2006 Income statement projections. Some of the issues I see with using this method is that I did is that not all balance sheet accounts will increase proportionately with the revenue and so this creates a very unrealistic and unreliable projection of the balance sheet. I also projected the cash to increase by 30% as well, but the cash account has been decreasing rapidly since Bob and Maggie took over the business. The way they are doing things is working for now; in the future I think they will run into problems because they are not maintaining a large enough cash balance. They do not always receive cash from their sales within 10 days and so by paying all their bills within the 10 day time frame to take advantage of the discount, they are creating a shortage in cash and thus reducing the company’s liquidity. This also creates high cost of trade credit. To calculate the cost of trade credit I used the following formula Cost of Trade Credit = ((1...

Horticulture In North America Essay

...The development of horticulture and the growth of maize created a surplus of food and pushed communities and hierarchies to grow in complexity. Less necessity for society members to contribute to the food supply allowed workers to specialize in new areas of village life (priesthood, craftsmanship, etc.) The Anasazi and Hohokam settled the arid Southwest with horticulture by developing complex irrigation canals without beasts of burden, metal tools, or other developments. This method of maize farming later spread easily into other parts of North America, particularly along the Mississippi, whose watersheds would cancel out the necessity for irrigation canals. Horticulture never spread to the tribes of the Great Basin and Plains, who instead adopted the bow and arrow...
