Phase 3 - Individual Project

Lately, there has been an increase in patients being diagnosed with chronic debilitating diseases here at the healthcare facility, and I believe that Senior Management, Departments Heads, Supervisors, and Stakeholders should come together and discuss a few topics concerning chronic diseases and the aging population. The crisis is clear. Chronic diseases are having a major impact on healthcare. Chronic conditions, unlike acute diseases, cannot be cured and can last for years, limit activitis, and require continuing medical attention. In the United States, chronic illnesses impact millions of people and are the leading cause of sickness, disability, and death. As more and more people age and develop chronic illnesses the number of doctors and nurses needed will go up. Therefore, the availability of well-trained doctors and nurses is imperative in order to provide the best possible care. By communicating and collaborating with doctors, nurses, and the community to treat patients and their illnesses we can possibly cut costs, make programs for patients more readily available, and help the patient improve their overall health. In preparation for this meeting I researched Alzheimer’s disease which is a major issue affecting the aging population. Alzheimer's disease, first described by the German neurologist Alois Alzheimer, is a physical disease that affects the brain. No one knows what causes it. However, some scientists believe that it may be a combination of several genetic and environmental elements that starts nerve cells in the brain to deteriorate. It is a progressive disease, that over time, parts of the brain will become damaged. When this starts to occur, the signs become more severe. Some of the signs of this disease are;
- Those in the first stages of the disease may have gaps in their memory and have problems putting the right words together. As the disease advances, the person may become mixed up and often forget the names of loved ones, places, etc.
- Have feeling of sadness or anger, become scared and frustrated easily due to the memory loss.
- Have difficulty with everyday activities like using the TV remote.
As the disease advances, the patient will need more help from those who care for them. Eventually, needing help with all their daily activities. Even though these are some of the symptoms, one must remember that everyone is unique and each person may have different experiences. Until recently, many facilities did not have to meet any specific standards, beyond the nursing home regulations and standards to which all nursing homes are held. Nor did they offer, the level of care needed for patients with Alzheimer’s, making it impossible for families to find a place that could actually care for their loved ones. However, in recent years the number of nursing homes that have established Special Care Units created to serve people with Alzheimer's disease has multiplied. There are now more units such a this and they growing within nursing home business. The roles of doctors and nurses has also changed due this disease. Years ago, you only had one doctor treating you for everything however with the advancement in science, technology, and education things have changed. For example, consultants are doctors who have extensive training/experience in a certain field. The specialty of the consultant will depend on various factors such as: age and warning signs of the person being treated. They work closely with other professionals, including nurses, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists, as part of a team to treat patients. However, the consultant is responsible for the patient's care. Nurses also work with people with dementia in several ways such as;
Community mental health nurses, also known as community psychiatric nurses (CPNs), are mental health nurses who work in the community inside the homes of patients. These types of nurses offer treatment, care and support for people with mental health issues and dementia. They evaluate patients at home and can counsel people with dementia and their caregivers on how to cope, and how to improve their well-being and quality of life. The fastest growing community or population in the U.S., are people over the age of 65, and this group of people have the greatest risk of developing this illness. Even though there has been some progress made, the treatments available for this disease are restricted and there is no cure. The disease poses a growing challenge to the quality of life for those diagnosed with the disease, their loved ones, and the healthcare system. For example, the memory loss associated with dementia and other symptoms leave patients unable to care for themselves or live independently. Depending on the situation loved ones may have to become the caregiver. When the disease advances, the family faces difficult choices concerning long-term care. The financial burden of live-in nurses or finding a facility that can care for loved ones. The disease has also had other affects on healthcare system such as;
- The direct costs of caring for those with Alzheimer's to American society will total an estimated $203 billion, including $142 billion in costs to Medicare and Medicaid. Total payments for health care, long-term care and hospice for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias are projected to increase from $203 billion in 2013 to $1.2 trillion in 2050 (in current dollars). This dramatic rise includes a 500% increase in combined Medicare and Medicaid spending.
- The costs of Alzheimer’s disease tops $148 billion a year.
- State and federal Medicare spending for nursing home care is anticipated to reach $32 billion by 2025.
- New cases of the disease are expected to triple or quadruple over the next 30 to 40 years. Even though there is no cure, there are medications available to help reduce the symptons of memory loss, and confusion for a limited amount of time such as; cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, Cognex) and memantine (Namenda) — to treat the cognitive symptoms (memory loss, confusion, and problems with thinking and reasoning) of Alzheimer's disease. Doctors also recommend physical activity for patients as long as possible.
Exercise offers several benefits like better strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. Exercise also helps preserve motor skills and improve balance, which in turn prevents injuries from falling. It can also increase energy, help with normal routines, and help the patient’s mood. I believe with the continued advancements in science, technology, and medicine one day a cure will be found for this disease and many more.

...Individual Project Since childhood I have been fond of scents. Perfumes fascinate me, how one scent sets a personality and gives each person their own distinct smell. I truly wish to be a perfumist one day. The career I believe I will most likely have in the forthcoming future will be the owner of a small perfume and cosmetics business. The idea of the business is to let the customers pick their own scents and mix and match with other preferable aromas, therefore creating unique perfumes for themselves. Section 1: The leadership requirements for a business owner would be being able to balance micro and macro management. The skills that are required are sales experience and customer service. In order to please the customer one has to have sufficient knowledge in engaging with customers. Once you are able to engage enough with your customers you can build trust and after you have built trust, your sales will reach heights. Section 2: Strengths that my leadership would have, would be the balance between micro and macro management. Such as time, inventory and schedule. The weakness would be the atmosphere, how the upper management controls the staff. Sales quota not being reached is also a weakness. To over come the weakness, many different methods would be used such as incentives that would come out from the profit of the inventory sold. Section 3: Career is a lifelong relationship and to me a career holds the ability...

...Misdemeanors: Misdemeanors are going to deal with fewer crimes. A few examples are minor thefts, certain traffic offenses (like DUI or driving on a suspended license), and many minor drug offenses. Dealing with misdemeanors you will either be hit with a fine or jail time that is usually less than a year. In addition, dealing with misdemeanors depending on the charges if you have multiple charges they can be structured to run consecutively (rather than concurrently) meaning that when one sentence ends the next one begins. In that way, multiple misdemeanor charges can equate to years in jail. With the jail term, you may receive from the misdemeanor it will either be local or county jail. A defendant does have a right to an attorney, and one is appointed if the defendant cannot afford one, or the defendant can choose to represent himself, though that is highly unrecommended and the court will likely try to change the defendant's mind. Jury trials can be available, depending upon the type of misdemeanor alleged, though it is often a smaller jury (frequently just 6 members) as opposed to the familiar 12-member jury. Felonies: Felonies are definitely the most serious types of crimes these types of crimes will definitely land you in prison for either years or life. Examples of felonies include murder, aggravated or grand theft, rape, etc. If convicted of a felony, an inmate will most likely serve their sentence in a state or federal correctional institution, more commonly referred...

Individual Project 1

...Individual Project 1 Kevin Hensley AIU Online PHIL201 July 25, 2013 Earl Barnett Individual Project 1 Over the years, I have asked myself many questions about life, its meaning and where I will or want to go in life. Many I have answered, and many which I have no answers to just more questions. In this paper I will try to express the times I have asked questions and come to what I feel are reasonable answers. Metaphysics When I was young, my Grandfather died quite unexpectedly. The night after the funeral I was lying in bed with my back facing the door to my room. I heard my Grandfather’s voice calling my name. When I rolled over, he was standing there in my room. He said, “Kevie, you be good and take care of your mother.” And then he was gone. After many more experiences of this kind, I have come to the conclusion a person’s soul does go on after death. How this is possible, however, I have not yet come to a reasonable conclusion other than our bodies are merely a vessel we use for time. Epistemology My daughter once asked me, “Dad, how do you know so much?” This question, for some reason, made me stop and think for a moment. How did I know or have the knowledge of the things I spoke of or acted upon? The conclusion I came to was I had the knowledge through several ways. Some knowledge was gained by life experience, while another bit of knowledge was gained by a teaching of some sort. My Grandfather teaching me about engines and how to work on them is an example. Ethics Over...

Individual Wellness Project

...Individual Wellness Change Project The client I selected for this project is a 70 year old female. This client resides in a household with her husband, and adult son. Retirement has not equated with rest and relaxation for my client as she also takes care of two of her adult brothers in poor health. Three granddaughters have been the source of joy for her as they’ve grown from precious infants to teenagers. My client also assumes the role of family matriarch for her other nine siblings. With many demands for time and attention, I predicted the needs assessments to direct us towards stress management. The results we received sent out project in another direction. With my initial prediction of the focus needed being on stress management, I had my client complete the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale (Holmes and Rahe, n.d.) first. In spite of numerous responsibilities and various family members always seeking advice, her score was only a 16. Scores below 150 represent only a slight risk of illness due to stress. The one area where stress does affect my client is in her sleeping habits. Many nights she experiences insomnia while contemplating current family situations, and consequentially suffers from fatigue. My client’s concern over taking care of everyone else leaves little time for her to focus on herself. The remainder of our assessments helped to point out what she already knew about her nutrition and physical activity levels. The results of the LiveWell assessment...

...American Intercontinental University Individual Project 1 Abstract Victims of crimes come in all ages, race, nationality, and sex. Studying the victims is important to determine why they were chosen, and how they were affected. Civil rights have come a long way in the past century, and continue to get better. Child rights groups continue to fight and win wrongful rulings in, so the kids can someday redeem themselves. First of all let’s take a look at what victimology is shall we. Victimology is defined as “the study of crime victims and the psychological effects on being a victim.” (Dictionary, 2013) Let’s take a look at why victimology is so important know a days. Here are some startling numbers from 2010. “The city of Detroit, Michigan literally looks like a war zone and violent crime is thriving. So far this year in Detroit, car thefts are up 83%, robberies are up 50%, burglaries are up 20% and property destruction is up 42%. Lawmakers in Illinois say that violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the National Guard needs to be sent in. In just one night last week seven people were killed and 18 were wounded – mostly by gunfire. In fact, there have already been 113 murders in Chicago this year. There are approximately 12 million crimes committed in the United States every single year. That is by far the worst in the world. No other nation has more than about 6 million reported crimes per year.” (Michael, 2010) With these types of numbers, there...

...Individual Project 2 English 206 Laquita Easter 5/8/11 The Cosby Show was a great show for African Americans in the early 80’s. I love one particular character from the show it was “Clif Huxtable” played by comedian Bill Cosby. The show most people thought it was not “real” enough. The reason most people will think this is because of “Cosby” family life on the show. Cliff and his wife Claire Huxtable were very successful, educated people. Cliff was a doctor and his wife was a successful lawyer. The two raised 5 children who needed much guidance and advice as any children would. The show was very interesting and funny but was the joke on how the whole series was played out? I don’t believe so, that made me adore and look up to Cliff Huxtable. He was fair, down to earth, and made his fatherly love & support for his children to broaden and make them choose for themselves. Bill Cosby character was the father of all fathers; he supported his wife and watch football on Sunday nights. He was still the all American dad, in one if my favorite episodes, it was when Theo wanted to stay out later. Theo: Dad, will it be too much to ask if U stay 30 minutes after curfew? Cliff: Well, Theo if I let you stay 30 minutes after your curfew, then you may ask for an increase in your allowance, and then you’ll want to borrow the car. Theo: Okay Dad, would a “no Theo” be too much to ask? I loved that episode and even use some of Cliff’s parenting when dealing with my own children situation...
